Yeah...the whole thing was weird. Colbert was confused, justifiably, the entire time. I don't think he realized just how wheels-off Congress is.

He really said that in congress, didn't he?

Way to go Colbert!

Holy shit. He made a genuine point in the final minute of his testimony. I wonder if between fucking around on their blackberry, laughing, or napping...the members of Congress actually heard what he said.

He made all kinds of jabs at congress in the process. I wonder how many people causght them. The first one, "elevating it to C-Span 1." was because this is the first congress since C-Span started recording congress, to highly restrict C-Spans access to congress.

Unprecedented?

Pay particularly close attention at about the 2:30 to 2:35 mark of this video (http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/360017/september-23-2010/fallback-position---migrant-worker-pt--2).

No, they aren't. Congress controls camera access to C-Span, and C-Span has less access than with previous congress'.

That is great.

Now how did the unedited hearing go?

Well, John Conyers asked him to leave the Committee room before he testified and Colbert pretty much told him to go fuck himself that he's Zoe's bitch today.

Colbert Offers Comedy Shtick in Farm Workers Testimony, Fails to Amuse Lawmakers (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/09/24/stephen-colbert-appears-capitol-hill-hearing-illegal-immigrants/)

At the beginning of the hearing, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., chairman of the Judiciary Committee, tried to pull the plug on Colbert's testimony in an effort "to get to the bottom" of the issue.

"I would like to recommend that now we got all this attention that you excuse yourself and you let us get on with the three witnesses and all the other members there," he said. "I'm asking you to leave the committee room completely, and submit your statement."

But Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., the subcommittee chairwoman who invited Colbert to testify, intervened.

"Many are eager to hear his comments," she said.

Colbert replied that he would leave only at her request.

"I'm here at the invitation of the chairwoman, and if she would like me to remove myself from the hearing room, I am happy to do so," he said. "I'm only here at her invitation."

Yeah...the whole thing was weird. Colbert was confused, justifiably, the entire time. I don't think he realized just how wheels-off Congress is.Down with the "wheels off" usage, but Colbert testified in character. That may have put them off balance after his eminently boring written submission. It did me.

I thought Colbert would act the straight man. I've seen him do it before. Boy howdy was I wrong about that.

Winehole23
09-26-2010, 04:36 AM
Considering his mere physical attendance at a Congressional hearing in the relevant clips, in essence Colbert testified before Congress as a fictional persona who shares the same name.

The joke is based (in part, right?) on lacking decorum and staying in character at a public inquest.

For all I know, that happens every day. Still, I was impressed with the chutzpah, and as humor, it works.

C-Span does get the "gabble to gabble" of public sessions. It's the other functions they now get shut out on, that they used to get access to.

Like Yoni says:

So, how'd you enjoy all the C-SPAN coverage of the Health Care debates?

Winehole23

Colbert was not totally in control of the proceeding. In fact he was not in control of it at all.

Except insofar as Congress argumentatively consented to him.

So perhaps there was an intended joke on the part of the committee, though admittedly no detectable sense of humor. Awkwardness prevailed.
