This was a point brought up by Mono some time ago, and it's a great one.

If you consciously became a Lakers fan after 1985, you're a bandwagoner. Simple as that. 1985 is the key year because that's when the Clippers relocated from San Diego to Los Angeles, so no longer can a post-1985 Lakers fan bail themselves out with the geographical proximity card. You chose the Lakers as your "hometown team" because they had championships to boast.

And don't give me any of that bullshit that you became a fan because you remember the good times when you sat there with your pops and watched Magic announce to the world that he was a faggot. I grew up in a family of Celtics fans and couldn't care less about them.

The logic is irrefutable. After 1985, there were two Los Angeles teams to chose from, and if you, provided you weren't already a Lakers fan, chose the more successful one, you are a bandwagoner.

Probably the same way I'm a Raiders and Spurs fan.

Mono grew up in a family of Lakers fans, and seeing first hand the kind of douchebags Laker fans can be, probably engendered in him a life long hatred of the Purple and Piss. Most likely, since Laker fans are natural bandwagoners, his family were probably Cowboy fans, which turned him off from being a fan in a similar way.

I grew up in SoCal, surrounded by asshole Lakers fans, and vowed to myself to never become a fan of that circus and be associated with their idiot fanbase, which is the worst in sports.

I can't hate on that. Lakers were kind of joke in the 60s, smelling nothing but skunk for an entire decade.

And I understand why Lakers fans who grew up in the 70s like Luva are having so much fun now. At that time, his beloved Lakers had 2 puny titles, which looked ridiculous compared to the Celtics' mighty 13. All the things he wished he could've said to the world in the 80s when the Lakers went on their first meaningful run, can now find an audience with the Internet.

1990. I was 10 years old and collecting sports cards was my main hobby. At that time, David Robinson was the hot rookie and I just gravitated towards him.

And the 90s (outside 99) sucked if you were a Spurs fan. Sure they were playoff caliber, but got beat down constantly in the playoffs, mostly because Robinson would fail to duplicate his outstanding regular season form in the playoffs.

Bandwagon Fan urban dictionary definition:

1. Someone who became a fan of the Boston Redsox after the 2004 world series.

"Look at all the bandwagon fans, there the reason why tickets are becoming so fuckin expensive"

2. Anyone who claims they are a "fan" of a particular sports team, even though they had no prior support for/interest in the team until that team started winning. These types of fans only show playoff interest, have probably never watched a regular season game, don't own any type of team merchandise, nor would they buy any.
"Everyone in Cleveland became a bandwagon fan only after LeBron James got drafted and they made the playoffs."

3. Switches support to whatever team/game/allegiance/belief happens to be successful at the time

"Celtics fans at the middle of the 07-08 NBA season"

Because they're the home town team. But pretty much every Lakers fan I know hates the Clippers.

Right there, you just admitted that more goes into rooting for a team than simply what city they are from.

As it applies in this situation, Laker fan can't use the home team cop-out as an argument to prove he's not a bandwagoner.

In your situation, it's different, because the Saints and Hornets are the only show in town.

But in Laker and Yankee fan cases, they are a bandwagoner if they choose the former over the Clippers and the later over the Mets.

So why the hell are you a Raiders fan as opposed to a Rams fan?

Wait, they won the ship shortly after arriving here.....

You didn't prove anything. I already told Luva that all fans bandwagon to a certain degree. If you chose the USC football program (provided you didn't go there) over Cal State Fullerton's, you're a bandwagoner.

If you chose the Dodgers over the Angels, you're a bandwagoner.

But Lakers fans are the worst in this regard as it pertains to the NBA, because LA is the only city with TWO NBA franchises. Couple this with Laker fan's tendency to frontrun, and you have the biggest bandwagoning fanbase in sports.

Jesus Christ Laker fans are fuckin' stupid.

Midnight LA too much for ya boy...:lmao

Then demonstrate to me why a Los Angeles resident who was born in, say, 1990 and chooses the Lakers over the Clippers isn't a bandwagoner?

A bandwagoner by definition is aligning yourself with the more successful organization when there exists alternative choices.

And again, before you repeat yourself, all fans are guilty of this, it's almost impossible not to be, but post-1985 Lakers fans are the worst. They simply didn't want to cheer for the Clippers because that would take away the ring smack they so love to impose on opposing fans.

This isn't a troll thread. I would've hit and run if my intent was to troll. I'm trying to have a serious discussion about why a Los Angeles resident born around 1980 would consciously choose the Lakers over the Clippers.

Both are hometown teams, and the Lakers history as being LA's first NBA franchise should mean little to someone who wasn't alive to experience it.

So why else would they choose the Lakers?

Oh, right. They've won championships.

Fair enough, but that is the definition of a bandwagoner. Like it or not.

This topic is fundamentally wrong.

A simple definition of Bandwagon fan, and there are many, could be well-described thusly:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bandwagon%20fan

Switches support to whatever team/game/allegiance/belief happens to be successful at the time.

Using that definition applied to this topic suggests a Los Angeles resident who chooses to support the Lakers must have had a previous allegiance to another team. Of course the exposure of the new fan to the Lakers will be many-fold higher than that of the Clippers, (kids at school see other kids wearing Laker gear, not Clippers stuff), thus the Lakers will be a normal and logical choice.

However, the whole argument falls apart when the Lakers fan post 1985 remains loyal to the Lakers. Even if his choice was a bandwagon choice, continued loyalty turns him into a true fan. Think of the person who moves from one part of the country to another. At first, he is a stranger. Over time he becomes integrated into the community, raises a family, puts his kids through the local schools, and so on. Eventually he is just as much of a "local" as anyone else in town. If the Lakers fans in your model continue to be fans, (through tough times as well), they soon cease to be bandwagon fans.

I dont hate the Clippers I feel sorry for them. And if you in Socal why didnt you be a Clips fan instead of jumping on the spurs? Yes they may have choked then, but they were still better than the Clips ...so you a bandwaggoner too. And this year logic is bullshit. That would make most of teh younger spur fanbase badnwagon fans to me bandwagon only truly applies if you jump on during winning and jump off, when they lose. If you stay on regardless of when you are a true fan. I started as little tyke in 1980 but became hardcore after we got swept by Moses and Doc. By this dumb logic I could be a bandwagon fan, but I have stayed through Elden, Sedale, Ceballos, Mihm, smush, Chuck Atkins and Brown.

It's a good thread with a flawed premise. At most there's a 50% chance you are a bandwagon fan if you meet that criteria, unless the OP is saying that everyone born later than 1985 should be a Clippers fan, in which case the point fails altogether.

I would say that, if you knew of both teams and decided to choose the Lakers solely because of their titles DURING A GOOD STRETCH then you are a bandwagon fan. The Lakers have had bad stretches since 85.

Human nature is to follow a leader. Few people have the strength or interest in following a team that's not going anywhere anytime soon. Those of us who have weathered the Spurs storm over the decades are just recently reaping our harvest. However the Lakers kids in here talking gangsta shit are bandwagon to the bone.
