ok so my box is officially in pieces. haha!
i took it all apart and am waiting til tomorrow to pick up some thermal grease.
my box had previously been fixed twice by microsoft and after a good 2 yrs or so it finally crapped out again the other week. i've had this thing for well over 5 yrs so i suppose i got my monies worth.
been towel trickin' the thing for the past 2 weeks but it has finally come to the bitter end of its life. hopefully i can revive this pos tomorrow when i pick up that grease shit and apply it. i was wanting to mod a fan to the underside and on top of the cpu and gpu but i can't find a tutorial online and am too lazy to figure out how to do so correctly or professionally.
fuckin' 360.

Had the same problem. I fixed my banned 360 with the arctic silver stuff, but couldn't fix my cousins. He took care of his worse, is most ;ikely why. He only bought it in 2009.

I still dont understand how people are getting the RROD... I have had my xbox360 since the chrstmas they where released and have had no problems.
Are you guys sticking these things in tight cabinets or on top of other hot-running hardware like a cable box or something?

I had a friend who had 7 RRoDs. Seven. Didn't matter where he put it or how much cooling he had around it, they went down eventually.
Sucks to hear that koriwhat. Maybe you'll see the dark side is your friend and buy a Ps3... or a gaming PC. :stirpot:

I hear stories like that and call absolute bullshit. Either he left each one of those 360's on for 24 hours, 7 days a week. And they were all refurbs. Or that didn't happen.
Nobody who treats their xbox right should be getting RROD multiple times from anything but the launch mobo. And if by some insane chance that story is true, it's so atypical that no prospective buyer should give it a second of thought.

There were reports that 60% of all early model 360s RRoDed. $1,000,000,000 is a huge amount of money to fix a console. You can't say that it wasn't that frequent of a problem when such staggering numbers were made known to the public.

I bet it's a higher percentage than 60. And I bet your friend was doing something very wrong if he managed to go through 7 of 'em within the timeframe of the first generation or two.

i bought mine back in '05. the first sign of it fuckin' up was the minute i took it out of the box and turned it on. it froze right away and though i was perplexed by that i was also too lazy to take it back to walmart. well, about a month and 1/2 later it rrod on me and i tried taking it back this time but it was over the 30 days or whatever that walmart allows returns so i sent it to microsoft.
microsoft sent it back "fixed" and i played it a week before it rrod once again and again i sent it back. since then i hacked it and have only had a few hiccups with the machine like games freezing every once in a while.
i rarely ever play the thing and when i say rarely i mean almost never. however, i did let a friend of mine borrow my machine for about 6 months and i know he's not the best of caretakers. he would leave it on at times when not playing it and would play the shit out of it. he also placed it in his entertainment system at one point and that ent sys was very compact and i am sure the machine endured crazy amounts of heat.
shit sucks considering i rarely played the thing and shelled out $500 initially for the box. oh well, you live and learn. buying consoles was always a hit to my pocket and never a necessity because i'm not really a gamer.

ok, well, shit is working like a champ now but looks like frakenstein.
i added a huge fan on the underside, a fan on the gpu heatsink, and a fan on the cpu heatsink. before doing all that i added artic silver thermal silicon and tried using a heatgun on the damn thing.
so far the system has been on for the last 10 minutes.
back in business!

this shit is driving me insane... i cut a hole through the metal chasis and the plastic case, put the fans on, booted the box and rrod. i imagine the reason for the rrod after putting everything back together is the fact that i had the fans directly on the motherboard before.
ah!!!! fuck!

i'm thinking my problem lies with the mounts for the heatsinks. i am going to go out today and buy the suggested bolts and washers to mount the heatsinks.
when i got the box to work that one time, i didn't have anything mounted and everything was out of the case. once i put everything back together it ceased to boot.
fuckin' pos xbox. i wanna play 2k11!

All I know is keeping your xbox vertical causes it. I got it once, wrapped it in a towel for 20 minutes, and haven't gotten it since I kept my xbox horizontal.
