I just hate the fact that I literally cannot derive anything from this game based on the fact that lebron and bosh only played 12 minutes, wade didn't even play, duncan only played 7 minutes, parker and ginobili played limited minutes, and all in all i'm sure there was much sandbagging to go around among the stars of each team.

I wish teams would sandbag less in the preseason so as to give fans a better idea of where teams stand versus other teams but I completely understand why this is never going to happen.

Popovich won't let Duncan play to start second half
By Tim Griffin on Oct 9, 10 08:51 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) Save & Share Yahoo! BuzzYahoo! Newsvine del.icio.us Facebook Google Reddit Fark Twitter
As a matter of instinct, Tim Duncan went to the scoring table to start the second half of the Miami-San Antonio game.

But Gregg Popovich had other plans. He had a friendly tap on Duncan's shoulder and pointed him to the bench.

I would imagine that Duncan is through for the evening after scoring two points and blocking a shot in seven first-half minutes -- all in the first quarter.

And it shows how much Popovich wants to see his young players see game action rather than worrying about a win in his second preseason game.

James and Bosh rest, Spurs win 90-73 (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/recap?gid=2010100924)
By Jim Vertuno

Call it an off night for LeBron James and Chris Bosh, as in they got most of the night off.

James and Bosh, Miami’s two big free-agent signings of the summer, played only the first quarter Saturday night as the Heat lost 90-73 to the San Antonio Spurs in a preseason game.

James scored 12 points and Bosh had two before spending the rest of the game on the bench in sweatsuits. The third leg of Miami’s Big Three, Dwyane Wade, sat out his second straight game with a sore right hamstring.

DeJuan Blair scored 13 points for San Antonio. Patrick Beverley had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Heat.

One night after playing Oklahoma City, James said he could have played more “but I’ll go off what coach (Erik Spoelstra) and the coaching staff want me to do and we go from there.”

Spoelstra said he wanted to look at other players. But with Wade out, and James and Bosh getting limited minutes, it may take some time for the Heat to find their peak form.

“Tonight we took a step backward, but we had a lot of key guys out,” James said. “We haven’t put in a lot of our stuff, they haven’t put in a lot of their stuff, so you just go and take it for what it is.”

James, who signed with the Heat over the summer after seven seasons in Cleveland, got a mix of cheers and boos from the sellout crowd before the game. One woman held up a “LeBron Marry Me?” sign.

Once the action started, James scored 12 of the Heat’s 26 points in the first quarter. Bosh, who scored 23 the night before, had a rough start. Blair went over him for San Antonio’s first basket and Bosh missed five of his six shots in the quarter.

“If Coach wanted to hold me out and get some rest, I’m all for it,” Bosh said. “I’m just going to have to get my legs again and get used to the NBA schedule again.”

While the lineup of James, Bosh and Wade has made the Heat a favorite for the NBA championship, there’s nothing new about San Antonio’s Big Three of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.

The Spurs also sat their stars for long stretches. Ginobili played 10 minutes of the first quarter, but Duncan logged only seven minutes and didn’t play after the period. When a relaxed Duncan leaned on the media table to stretch, he waved to two schoolgirls who called his name, bringing a squeal from the young fans.

Like everyone else, Ginobili seemed anxious to see what James, Bosh and Wade can do when they get on the court together for more than a few minutes.

“In a lot of teams, there are two All-Stars and really good players, so I want to see them with Dwyane, too. It’s going to be interesting to see how they adjust to each other,” Ginobili said.”It’s going to be really important for other players to make shots because they’re going to be open.”

James Jones put Miami up 46-40 when he was fouled on a 3-pointer and made the free throw. Then Ginobili and Parker showed they’ve still got some magic when Ginobili fired a bullet pass to Parker, who finished the play with a reverse scoop layup to trim Miami’s lead to four at halftime.

Duncan was on the floor with Parker and Ginobili to start the third, but coach Gregg Popovich pulled him for Antonio McDyess a split second before the whistle to start play. The Spurs opened things up with an 18-2 run capped by Curtis Jerrells’ long jumper that made it 63-53.

The Spurs outscored Miami 20-10 in the fourth. Miami committed 19 turnovers.

“I thought the whole bench did a good job defensively,” Popovich said. “They were impressive with not just their effort, but their recognition. That was nice to see.”

Richard Jefferson and Jerrells each scored 11 for San Antonio. Jones added 12 points for Miami.

“I think we’re at a pretty good point right now,” Bosh said. “It’s only three games in and everybody here hasn’t really played together.”

Preseason: San Antonio Spurs 90, Miami Heat 73 (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/)
by Jesse Blanchard
48 Minutes of Hell

AT&T Center–Behind second year phenom DeJuan Blair, the San Antonio Spurs announced their presence among the very NBA elite in a one-sided victory over the heavily favored Miami Heat and LeBron James.

James, the centerpiece to the summer’s ballyhooed free agent class, was held to 12 points on 3-of-8 shooting with three rebounds and three assists.

That this was a preseason game in which the Miami Heat were playing on the wrong end of the rare exhibition back-to-back, and LeBron James only played in the first quarter, probably had something to do with it. Context is everything after all.

So while it might be a little early to proclaim DeJuan Blair the San Antonio Spur’s latest Most Improved Player candidate, it is worth noting that in his second consecutive start he posted another strong outing against a quality opponent (previously against the Yao Ming/Luis Scola combination, tonight against Chris Bosh).

If Anderson puts his mind to it, and sucks in what the coaches preach on defense, I don't see any reason why he can't be an above average defender. He posses enough athleticm and length ( not far from Bowen) and should have the mental inclination to be dicipline on defense. He could really be our answer to the SF defender with a shot. If he is smart that's his ticket to long and productive NBA career. I don't see him doing it simply on offense ( there are more than enough scorers out there, nothing special)

Bonner's injury and the big rotation (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2010/10/bonners-injury.html)
By Jeff McDonald

Bonner says he doesn't plan on missing Tuesday's game against the Clippers in Mexico City, since the injury is on his non-shooting hand.

Actually that's probably a good thing. Someone as white as Bonner is likely to be murdered in Mexico.

couple things...

good all around game from Anderson. hopefully he focuses on defense and nails the open threes. he's a bulky, big-framed guy. some guys can carry that weight defensively with quick feet and use it to their advantage (i.e. Ron Artest), other guys can't. hopefully he's able to carry it. if he can, he might have a lot of potential (or more than what people expected) defensively for us.

i like the idea of Blair starting only if the Spurs can put a great perimiter defender on the floor, which we might not ever have this year.

The very little I saw of Anderson was encouraging. For all the concerns in the scouting reports about him, he looks comfortable on an NBA floor, which is a huge deal for a young player.

With Anderson's good play in limited action . EVen if it's early ,I'm pretty sure of our rotation , even for the playoffs. : Parker , Hill, Manu, Anderson, RJ, Blair, Splitter , Dice, TD. That's it. The only thing that remains undecided is combinations, sub times, and how much time each player gets. The rest of guys are simply injury and back to back game fillers.

What position did Anderson play tonight sg or sf? The 64k question still seems to be, who is our backup sf going to be?

This should answer your question:
""Roughly five seconds after he entered Saturday's preseason game against Miami, Spurs first-round draftee James Anderson found himself matched up defensively with reigning MVP LeBron James.
Anderson held his ground as James tried to back him toward the basket and forced a spin move that produced an errant jumper"

I don't care what position James was playing, the fact alone that he held his ground guarding james is good enough for me. On offense, as long as he can hit open shots , i'll take that any time.

i'd trust someone trustworthy's opinion of Anderson way over any fucking article. Seriously anyone who saw this game that's legit....any opinions?

Duncan3232rrw234423423werewrwerew3543543 Can you give an assessment of Anderson? Honestly?

I have not been so excited to see a Spurs rookie in my recent braindead history. I'm eager to see this kid get a chance.

Well Manu saw the game, he says this of anderson:
“Today he was very good,” Ginobili said. “Quick feet and reacting to shots. Offensively, it's going to take time to adjust to our system, learn when it's your time and when it's not.”

Which one of them is playing SF ? .. But seriously, for the open practice and Houston game, Anderson has been playing strictly SF

Anderson was average and looked a bit timid in the first half on defense. The second half was a different story. The kid really stepped up the defensive intensity. He was a huge part of the Spurs' runs helping create the fast break opportunities.

No complaints from me. Just relief that the kid now knows that he CAN play solid defense.

Anderson looks so old he looks like Greg Oden's grandfather. He moves so gingerly on the court, he looks like he needs a walker.

Then the ball comes his way and he looks like Gervin. No doubt about it, the man picks his spots. :)

This guy looks like he couldn't scale a sheet of typing paper but he's got three blocks in limited minutes in two games. Another nice pick by the Spurs' FO.

Defensively, James Anderson needed help guarding LeBron (but so did RJ). He did foul him once along the baseline, pushing him on the hip as LeBron seemed to have the advantage. The Spurs were trapping LeBron almost every time he tried to post-up, yet he was still able to score.

Anderson had some rough edges. He dropped down anticipating having to help on D, lingered too long and was caught for defensive 3-seconds. He also got called for trying to bull his way over Howard on a drive. He picked up a second offensive foul a little later.

He also had some good plays. Anderson got some confidence hitting the 3. I thought his fast break layup contorting his body to score over Beverly was impressive. He stole a couple of balls and he had two blocks on the shorter Kenny Hasbrouck.

The Spurs defense actually looked good on everything except the 1st quarter screen switches. You know the play where LeBron, or Dirk (fill in the blank) sets a screen then frees up for the open jumper.

The 2nd and 3rd teamers did a nice job of forcing turnovers against the Heat scrubs by trapping the ball. DeJuan Blair was fantastic. The rookie from Arkansas, Patrick Beverly, was very impressive. For this one game, he looked better than Mario Chalmers. That kid is a ball hawk, chasing down lots of rebounds.

Jerrells was great defensively and he hit some shots but he is a sorry passer. There was one series of plays where Jerrells made a horribly telegraphed pass that was intercepted followed by an Anderson steal, only to have Jerrells make an even worse pass that was stolen...only to have that rewarded by a travelling call on the Heat. It was pretty funny but sad to watch.

Gist made a block on a close-out that was a surprise to everyone.

The Spurs have a lot to work on in order to be good this year. Blair has been the bright spot thus far.

Almost everyone has dismissed the idea, that Anderson can and will be our back up small forward. sighting his lack of size to match-up against bigger small forwards. As Manu says and as I've always said in the past the size mismatch is grossly exagerated. How often will you be in a situation where your opponents back-up small forward will be huge player and a prolific scorer. Practically never if you ask me. Although it would be ideal to get a bowen type, Anderson is definetly our best solution to the current need given the circumstances. You can forget everyone else ( Simmons, Gee, Gist or anyone still out there who is still available). It's simply a waste of time

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/spurs/spurs_popovich_seeks_small_forward_to_spell_defens e_or_shoot_104681669.html

""if he can defend the way he did in Saturday's preseason win over Miami — at one point blocking Heat guard Kenny Hasbrouck on consecutive possessions — Anderson would seem to eventually be a prime contender for backup minutes at small forward.

Manu Ginobili, another candidate for spot minutes at small forward, sees no reason the 6-foot-6 Anderson can't hold up at the other wing spot.
“There are not so many small forwards that are huge,” Ginobili said. “Bruce and me played (there) for three championship runs and put together we are not 300 pounds. If you understand the system and move your feet quick and follow the game plan, why not?”

question how good a defender was Bowen at 21 or even at 25 ? Second question, was bowen significantly more gifted athletically and had more length, compared to Anderson? My point with the questions are , if Anderson learns the system and nuanaces of good defensive, why can't he come anywhere close to defending like Bowen ? As Manu says ,why not ?
