I just caught this video on CNN and was wondering what people thought about things like this.

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/showbiz/2010/10/07/sbt.teen.mom.controversy.hln?hpt=C2

Here's a youtube video of the same couple

why exactly are people talking anger management help here? shouldn't they be talking charges? I mean, isn't that what they would be talking about if it had been the dude hitting her?

what would you do if that happened to you? I have to say I'd be pretty surprised if I managed to contain myself from hitting her back. I just can't stand women (or in this case little brat girls) who think they have some pass on hitting a man simply because they are women.

I don't really care. It's a tv show whose purpose is to showcase trashy people and their outrageous behavior.

Tha husband/bf/baby daddy etc looks like he's taken abuse his entire life and never done anything about it. Not saying that he SHOULDN'T, but the thought prolly never occurred to him, which is why authorities SHOULD be stepping in w/ or w/o his say-so.

I agree there's a double standard when it comes to violence and prosecution, but maybe there should be.

Assuming a dude would even let a girl hit him, what's she going to do? Bloody his lip? Bruise his eye? On the other hand, if a guy really goes off on a girl, he can more or less knock her face inside out, if he wants.

In other words, dudes can usually take care of themselves... and if they get hit by a girl, it's probably because they allow it to happen.

that's bullshit. Its not a matter of what a woman can or cannot do. A female weightlifter could probably put you through the wall if she wanted to, does that mean in her case, there should be charges? That's not how laws work. Its the principle of the thing. No one, male or female, has the right to physically abuse another person like that.

Okay, well the next time I'm dating a female weightlifter I'll keep that shit in mind. Until then, I'll just grab some girl's skinny ass wrists, push her onto the couch and say, 'bitch, don't even try it.'

(Assuming the hypothetical that I was the type of dumb trash who would even have to worry about such a foul-mouthed scenario.)

I'm not even disagreeing about the should-be rigidity of laws either, I'm just saying, the average female is almost incapable of inflicting physical abuse against the average male. And that a dude allowing himself to get hit and then pressing charges is pretty bitchmade.

If you've watched the whole Amber/Gary thing from the start (yes, guilty pelasure...) you know thisisn't their first bout with violence. It's sad. It's worse that their little girl has to go through it as well.

She could easily be charged with assault in this instance.

then you don't understand what physical abuse means, plain and simple. It isn't about the seriousness of the injury or whether or not the man could have stopped the woman. Again, its the principle of the thing. Besides, per your double standard, if after your "bitch don't even try it" the bitch doesn't stop trying to hit you, you'd be forced to do something more drastic than just push her or hold her down, now wouldn't you? but hey, men can take it.

And that a dude allowing himself to get hit and then pressing charges is pretty bitchmade.Which is precisely the reason why more men like the dude in that video don't come forward with their story. I don't know the exact numbers but I'd be willing to bet cases of spousal abuse by women is higher than you or I might think.

I think its safer to provide a legal recourse for men like the dude in the above video to resort to rather than tell them "deal with it, you're a man". I really think that concept is bordering on idiotic.

Agreed. The law applies to all citizens equally with regard to intent and action...this fat bitch was trying to intimidate him and the dude just took it like a punching bag.

I don't know how dudes can't tell how grumpy or angry bitches are when they meet them. It's so obvious that this bitch has anger issues and is unhappy with herself - why you gonna go and stick your dick in a bitch like that? No excuse.

Correct me if I'm wrong and I might well be, but most states don't prosecute assault unless the alleged victim decides to pursue the charge, no?

If that's the case, the op's thesis is that the incident should result in charges. And maybe it should/could. But that course of action is determined by the discretion of the victim, not failures of the law. I personally, have no problem with individual choice (to not charge) or the social stigma that gives rise to it. Or the converse.

And when an enraged woman goes off the handle and comes at you, not with smacks or slaps, but with blunt instruments or serious weapons, you block her or sit her down, she cries abuse and you go to jail, or you let her do some damage. That's the problem and it's a no win for you.

...it could also be an assault charge if the assault takes place in the presence of a peace officer.
The PO could arrest the person and file the charge of assault (some states call it battery). It could be prosecuted whether the victim files a charge or not-if the PO witnessed it.

If that guy in the video had any smarts he would file the charge, especially since it is on video for the world to see, and use it as a case to gain custody of his daughter. It would take the baby out of the psycho mom's wrath and allow the dad to teach psycho mom a lesson about violence-without resorting to violence himself.

It's amusing to me that people think there's somehow a legal discrepancy or double standard. There isn't. If a guy is physically assaulted by a woman, he can press charges just the same as anyone else. Most guys won't, though, out of embarrassment or whatever else. That's where the discrepancy is.

It is true that people often see men beating women as more problematic than women beating men, due to both physical differences and the fact that the characteristics of femininity have been constructed to include a certain level of helplessness, but that has nothing to do with how assault laws are written. The double standard exists only at a societal level.

The last time I saw that show that same couple was on, and the girl started screaming at the guy, then everytime he spoke (in a calm manner btw), she yelled "stop yelling at me!" And then she forced him to leave saying "I need a real man," and telling her toddler "daddy's leaving you." I was disgusted and my decision to never watch MTV or VH1 was once again reinforced.

It honestly sounds like she wants a guy that will hit or intimidate her so she can believe that its not unusual to be the crazy, violent bitch that she is.

This is just like Jay Leno's "Street Smarts". You don't see normal people, because that shit is boring. They pick only the most idiotic / entertaining people to show off on TV.
