They are getting amazing looks because of the defense. These are NBA players and they will hit shots if you leave them open.

I hope in the last Spurs preseason game the Spurs actually try on defense. They need to have the mindset that they are going to be great. Right now, they continue to act like they can flip the switch.

I don't know if Hill coming off the bench is a good idea

#2!
10-12-2010, 09:44 PM
DeJuan, Tim, and James Anderson the only guys playing well tonight.

I get so sick of seeing an opposing team's player pull up for a 3 pointer and Tony is the closest one to him, but instead of running at the guy he simply keeps his feet planted and throws his upper body forward as the guy takes his shot. As if to say "Oh man, I was gonna contest that, but I just couldn't possibly have gotten to him. Did you guys see me almost move to guard him?"

Spurs have an undersized PF and undersized Sg in Hill and Blair. I say move one, preferrably Hill and bring in a Sf. Just my thoughts. I thinK Anderson will fill in at backup Sg and spell Sf from time to time. I like Hill but I'd look to move him for a need

The defence so far was clearly an experiment. They played zone mainly when most bench players were on the court, it really isn't a good game to evaluate the Spurs defensive ability.

I'm more worried about the fact that the players who were suppose to be fighting for the backup small forward aren't getting any playing time, all the backup 3 was played by Anderson, not a good sign for Simmons and Gee.

DPG21920
10-12-2010, 09:45 PM
It is painfully obvious that re-signing Bonner was a huge mistake. Even if he is insurance for a guy like Dice leaving next year, he should be no where near a team with title aspirations.

zone defense would be a nice tool in the shed. Suns had a lot of success against the lakers with it, unfortunately we suck at it. Our 3pt defense is pretty shoddy already unlike spurs teams of the past, zone only makes it worse.

They can't because of RJ. You can't give up a rotational player like Hill or Blair for a SF because there is not enough minutes behind RJ to justify it.

I'm sure they'll play the majority of the 2nd half and Pop usually rests his starters the last couple pre-season games. That'll give the bench more time to prove their worth.

I know they are trying some experimental things, but my question is why? Is a zone even a real option?

It bothers me that the this team's mindset is supposed to be defense, yet they don't play like it. Even in preseason. If you are going to get back to being great, the team's attitude needs to change. They need to take every scrimmage, preseason and regular season game personally on that end.

Teams like the Heat, and even the Clips are playing with so much more intensity. I am not saying I want Tim/TP/Manu diving all over the place, but I want to see the fierce mindset on the defensive end. I want the focus and intensity.

The only third stringer I remember out there was Cousin.
The rest are supposed to be rotation guys.

Obviously, I won't suggest tanking the season based on these games, but you can't tell me they're not trying. Heck, the offense looked discombobulated even with the starters out there.

They can't because of RJ. You can't give up a rotational player like Hill or Blair for a SF because there is not enough minutes behind RJ to justify it.

I dont disagree but I am not a fan of having two undersized players at different positions that need to be on the court if for nothing else but to give others a rest. Blair is too valuable in my opinion and there is no way you can trade Hill for a real Pg but getting a Sf who could possibly take RJ's place and who is young and not undersized is something I am intrigued with. We are loaded at guard,

ElNono

This is what the pre-season is for. To work on things you might/might not use during the real season. The players probably aren't all that familiar with the schemes and all that to begin with. The games mean nothing... the players know this so its hard to tell them to hold the opposing team under 40 when in the back of there mind they know the games mean nothing. Especially with all the veterans we have. I would rather Duncan not even play in the games if I had it my way.

Pop was know to have kind of an aversion to playing zone defence. Ideally it would be good to have that option but in reality I think it's safe to say it won't be anything we'll see in a regular bases, so yeah I would rather see the guys who are still fighting for a roster spot busting their asses on man to man defence.

I expect the veterans to get less and less minutes as the pre-season goes on. Much like in the NFL where they play the starters the 3rd game but not at all the 4th. Same kind of mindset. There is still 4 games left where I expect less minutes to go to the starters and virtually no minutes at all the last game or 2

The game thoughts should be hilarious. For a team not playing their starters much supposedly, they sure are playing their starters a lot.

well its not the O, its the ridiculous zone D they are experimenting with. NOthing new IMO. You remember 2 yrs ago spurs D sucked in the begining of the season because Pop saw something in the Celtics D against the lakers (swarming D) and tried to incorporate it? Failed miserably coz we did not the personnel. Same thing now, pops eyes has lit up seeing how suns zone D was effective against the lakers and its not workign for the Spurs. But its worth an exhibition game against the clippers to see how it goes. :bang cept its freaking ugly to watch for teh fans.

Well, I really like the overall starting line up. Hopefully RJ continues to work and he puts in the work on defense and the boards.

I love the rebounding of our starting 5. Every position are/should be above average rebounders respectively.

Hopefully the offense gets smoother.

At this point, it seems worst case scenario is upon us from an upside stand point. None of the new guys (Neal, Gee, Temple, Simmons, Gist, Penney) have looked remotely good. It looks like none of them could pan out which would be terrible and worst case.

Hopefully Gee can be that guy and some others pick it up. Spurs desperately need shooting and a back up SF.

I don't know why anyone expects Temple to be fine after missing so much time. He has already proven he can play spot minutes in the SPurs system and before he was injured in summer league he was playing very well. How everyone is overlooking Jerrells shoot first mentality is beyond me. He isnt afraid to shoot and I will give him that but he is not going to work out in the long run, IMO. He does however seem to bring lots of energy and SPurs seem to make comeback late when he is in so I will pay attention to that too but I'd tkae Temple
