Tom Could Take Your Breath Away Again: Top Gun 2 in the Works

Who hasn't been waiting for this?

Reportedly, Paramount Pictures is gunning to put Top Gun 2 up on the big screen, making offers to both Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott. And the best news? Tom Cruise has apparently agreed to reprise his role as Lt. Pete Mitchell, a.k.a. Maverick.

Though the role would be much smaller than the starring one of the 1986 original, Maverick would still feature in the film in what New York Magazine calls a "not too 'obvious' part, i.e. Lieutenant Pete ‘Maverick' Mitchell as grizzled Top Gun flight instructor."

Why is this such good news? While Cruise has lost some (okay, most) of the je ne sais quoi that made him so swoon-worthy back in the 80s, NewsFeed would like to point out that you should never underestimate the power of aviators and a flight suit.

NY Mag also notes that a second movie could lead to a Top Gun franchise and a profitable one at that. After all, the first movie did rake in $353 million worldwide. (via New York Magazine)

Didn't he say that he made "Born on the Fourth of July" to make up for glorifying war in Top Gun?

Top Gun 2 features the thrilling action and suspense of a bunch of geeks sitting at computer consoles flying predator drones and blowing up terrorists.

I think most DVD collectors would want this film to be made…Top Gun set the standard for sensational 6x audio…The jet by’s that were panned L, C, R, Ls, Rs, kept movie goers on the edge of their seats…Every big screen outlet for the next 10 years played Top Gun on their systems to show consumers how great a home theater can sound…The audio track took over a year to record & mix….

On a side note: Top Gun lost best sound award to Oliver Stone’s Platoon…Platoon 2.0 (Lt Rt) was dubbed in just a couple weeks…The actors controll the final vote and for that year preferred anti-American films ...

I didn't like the first one so I don't think a second should be made.

Hopefully they can have parts for Kelly McGillis and her wife. Maybe a subplot of her getting kicked out over "don't ask don't tell".

I didn't think Top Gun was a bad movie.

The thing I hated about this movie is all the little chodes that would do their Kata form in Karate to the music of Highway to The Dangerzone.

Even when I was 8 and didn't know the word I knew it was gay.

Brah, what you are referring to are "Demos," where all sorts of elements are put on display (such as Kata, Sparring, and Weapons). You can't hate on Kata because Danger Zone and the Mortal Kombat theme were everyone's favorite song, if they did it right they'd use "In A Gadda Da Vida."

Btw, didn't Kenny Loggins come to SA-town not too long ago?

I approve of Top Gun 2, but the chick flight instructor didn't age too well. Definately have to replace her. I'm a Tom Cruise fan, but I'm also an OJ supporter, so I don't know how reliable my opinion is nor do I think I'd be trusted with running a film studio...but I know Tony Scott's directing sucks dick.
