Susan Yerkes: Spurs have a benchful of little 'subs,' and a notable friend

Web Posted: 05/22/2005 12:00 AM CDT

San Antonio Express-News

Another NBA championship isn't the only thing the Spurs have to look forward to.

Seems the team's also experiencing a baby boom. According to the unofficial grapevine, at least half a dozen of the team's players, coaches and staff and their wives are expecting babies.

And though Spurs folks have put the wraps on the news, some sharp-eyed observers have noticed Tim Duncan's wife, Amy, is apparently among the expectant moms.

Bruce Bowen's been more open about the fact that his wife, Yardley, is expecting, although Baby Bowen isn't due to appear until this fall. As with Tim and Amy, the Bowens' baby will be the couple's first.

Spurs newcomer Nazr Mohammed and his better half, Mandy, are also expecting a baby. While it will be the couple's second, it will be their first since Nazr signed on with the Spurs this spring.

And 7-foot center Sean Marks' wife, Jennifer, is expecting a little addition to the growing Marks clan soon.

Off the court, coach P.J. Carlesimo's wife, Carolyn, trainer Will Sevening's spouse, Terri, and Mike Budenholzer's wife, Mary Bet, are also looking forward to new babies.

On and off the court, you might say, the Spurs keep producing. Congratulations to all.

That is great news. I hope all goes well for the guys and their families. Having a pregnant wife made my husband a mess. Unfortunately, we lost 3 babies last year.

BTW Shelly, I love that avatar. :)

I knew about Amy and think it is wonderful! =)

She came into the Terrace club resturant a few weeks ago. Amy's server is a good pal of mine. I asked her how it was serving Amy. My friend gushed about how sweet Amy was and that was also when my friend told me about noticing Amy's bunch.

Congrats to Timmy, Amy and all the rest. Ahh, when we win, think of all those babies being " in" their first parade. How great is that!

Spurs newcomer Nazr Mohammed and his better half, Mandy,
mmm I have a little question please :p
How come you say "better half" in this sentence? Mandy>>>>Nazr?
Thank you, your dumb french.

Oh I don't really get it... In french we say sometimes "moitié" = "half" when talking about your GF / wife... but i dont get the "better"... Is it a polite form to be nice with women or something else?

LOL.. I was thinking the same thing. How cool would it be if both Bowen's wife and Duncan's had sons and 20 years from now, Duncan Jr and Bowen Jr would be playing for the Spurs? :spin

I just heard a lead-in for the local news that said something about a little-known "family secret" of Duncan's that may have an impact on his participation in the Finals.

Does that mean that his baby is due about that time, I wonder?

I can't imagine if she were 8 months pregnant no one would have mentioned it by now or it would have leaked....so I don't think she'd be too offended if he missed a prenatal visit. :)

Yes, she goes to games. And yes, someone did notice. But sometimes, it's good to respect a players privacy. Bruce and Marks came out a while back publicly talking about expecting babies -- that's why it's been talked about in the forum a lot.

Since Tim didn't (and neither did Nazr, PJ, or Mike Bud), I wasn't going to make a baby announcement in the forum months ago.

If New Zealand laws are the same as Australian, the baby will have dual citizenship.
