Can the Magic be the 2nd seed if the Heat win their division? I understand record always takes precedence when determining HCA, but not necessarily seeding. I seem to remember in 2006 the Clippers had the sixth seed and faced Denver (3rd) in the first round. I could be wrong, but if not then the highest the Magic could finish is #4.

I think the West is wide open after the Lakers. A lot of question marks with a lot of teams, some regression from some of the older teams, a step forward for some of the younger teams, some changes that could help or hurt certain teams. I'm making a huge leap of faith with the Mavs and their depth of talent but I wouldn't be surprised if they end up in the 4-7 playoff seed either. I'm not jumping on the Jazz hype yet. But I just think the West is very wide open and they might have one of the most stable teams under Sloan even with the Boozer departure. I think the Suns are a huge wild card. For all his faults, Amare was at the very least a high percentage scorer in the front court. I'm not quite sure what to expect if Hedo is really going to play PF. Depending on what Denver gets in return for Carmelo, they could still make the playoffs.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Magic end up as the #1 seed over the Heat. And quite frankly, after the top 4 seeds, the rest of the Eastern Conference is bukkake. I think Amare and D'Antoni's offense are good enough in the regular season to be a middle of the pack playoff seed in the awful East. I also think the Hawks have started getting some unwarranted hype and will see a steep decline because they really aren't that good. Bobcats fall back down to earth. And the 8th seed is up for grabs among probably 5 or so teams. a .500 record or worse will probably be enough to snag the 8th seed.

It is possible if one division had two of the top records(Miami and Orlando for example) to get the top 2 seeds. After that, it's the leaders of each division in the east that will get the 3rd and 4th. Lets say that Atlanta had the 3rd best record(same division as Miami and Orlando), no matter what they would take the 5th seed even if hypothetically the central or atlantic division sucks balls.
