Here is the original pledge:

I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Written by a socialist.

It also called for this salute:

It seems funny that a Baptist minister wouldn't include the words "under God" in a pledge he composed, but it probably isn't.

It is funny that the usage of "under God" that was tacked on over 60 years later and over 20 years after the author's death is probably grammatically incorrect.

I don't really have a problem with the pledge, but if I had a choice I would much rather be pledging allegiance to the constitution than to the flag - seems a little more important and substantial:

I pledge allegiance
to the constitution
of the Unitied States of America.

And to the Republic
created by its prose.
One nation, united,
with liberty and justice for all.

Agreed. I stopped saying the pledge in elementary school when I learned the definition of "pledge" and remembered we're a free country.

It's fair to apply to military or the government, but not really to the general citizenry.

The Constitution is a document of fundamental ideas and rules whose purpose is to protect the freedoms of the citizens of this country. In THEORY, as long as the Constitution is not changed or diverted from, our freedoms and our way of life in this country remain protected.

The flag is a symbol. It can stay the same regardless of what rights and liberties are protected for us. We could fall to Fascists or Communists and the flag could remain exactly as it is now. It holds no power and does not inherently protect any of our liberty.

The Pledge is basically indoctrination to mindless patriotism. It's not really harmful, but it's not necessarily valuable either except as a hot button for people who want to bicker about how and when it is performed every, oh, two years around this time.

Would it have been better in the eyes of the Idiocracy if she just lied and pledged allegiance to a country "under God." She clearly omitted the phrase, but that's hardly "anti-American." It's dumb as fuck to go after this woman for not swearing "under God," that shit reminds me more of Muslim theorcracies than American.

Week after week, "conservatives" find ways to make our country look worse and worse.

:lmao

I agree with your reaction, and I should have put a clause in my post like "not that Liberals are any better," but I figured most people know I don't play the one-sided game. Still, for being the people running on "values," the GOP and its proxies are shit out of "values" at this point. I don't know what Liberals run on, can't say I pay enough attention but I assume "Hey, at least we're not Republicans" works for most people with a brain and know they only have a choice between left or right.

Yes, I always loved his work, and his pledge. Too bad so many people from within want to destroy this nation.

I like it too, but the start of his recitation sounds pretty fucking socialist to me. I don't see anything wrong with it, but people that cry blood out of their eyes any time they hear the word "socialist" and "unity" and "america" in the same speech...they might have some trouble wrapping their pin-sized heads around it.

Winehole23
10-27-2010, 01:25 AM
We weren't nearly nationalistic enough for a christian socialist of the early 20th century and our grandparents and great-grandparents apparently agreed with him, so we are forever saddled with the clunky loyalty oath he devised to keep us all in line.

People who measure how the US is perceived in the rest of the world can actually put a dollar value in terms of trade dollars per % point of approval.

Conservative unilateralists such as John Bolton and company, really did a number on US popularity in the rest of the world.

While you might not particularly care what the rest of the world thinks of the US, if you were running an exporting company trying to crack into a foreign market it would suddenly be a rather crystal clear cause/effect.

There are several of them... Republican Party, Democratic Party, Libertarian Party, Green Party. Basically anything with Party in it's name (except maybe Pizza Party, but that does contribute to the growing obesity problem, so I'd say even them). ;)

Vote the Man/Woman/Thing from the Abyss, not the Party!

I wonder what Mr. Skelton would think of Fox News's hate-filled fear-mongering spin doctrine that they inject into their daily programming.

My guess is, that fundamental desire to break from unity, to form a chasm in the American populace, to segment people and turn the public into a "you vs. me" black and white baseline would anger him far, far more than any omittance of a couple of words from a comparatively meaningless pledge to a flag.

The importance of principles and actions would likely far outweigh the attention to repeated ceremony in his eyes. But of course, that's just silly conjecture on my part.
