I'd like to think that the Rockets are the best team in the division, but seeing as we haven't played one game yet, I'll have to go with:

Dallas
San Antonio
Houston
Memphis
New Orleans

Though if I had to guess, things will probably be a lot different at the end of the year.

I don't see how everyone outside of Houston can't see how stacked our roster is. Our only weakness is possibly SF. I don't think our rookie lotto pick Patterson is gonna get any playing time.

Brooks/Lowry/Ish
Martin/Lee/Ish
Battier/Budinger/Jeffries
Scola/Hayes/Jeffries
Yao/Miller/Hill

11 man rotation + Hill and Ish, both are borderline worthy of playing time

tbh, Martin can quickly turn into a chuker, and wasn't Lowry injured?
Plus Yao is going to take a while to get in rhythm.

Then again, I like some of the other guys, like Bud. We'll see.

Houston is really stacked, but I have to see how they play first..

Martin and Yao are both very injury prone..

I'd like to see how they balance the shots between Brooks, Martin, Scola and Yao..Battier looked a lot worse than he usually does defensively last year, so I'd have to see if he gets back on track this year, because they'll need his D to make up for Martin..

Their bench is really stacked though, I don't think that's a concern at all..Brad Miller's one of the best passers in the NBA, he's used to Adelman's system, so he'll fit in well..they have a good amount of shooters and guys that can attack the rim off the bench..they definitely have one of the best benches in the NBA..

Their success pretty much depends on Martin and Yao holding up, and balancing the shots between a lot of guys that like to score..

Have you watched Yao this preseason? Certainly looks to be in rhythm and has gotten better (and more minutes) every preseason game he's played. The Rockets are easily in the top three for most deepest team in the league:

Brooks/Lowry/Ish
Martin/Lee
Battier/Budinger/Jeffries
Scola/Hayes/Patterson
Yao/Miller/Hill

So much (young) talent they can throw at you throughout the game.

Hornets78, remember how mad you were about the Hornets' off-season?..especially the Ariza trade..I was looking at that thread a few days ago..

Have you changed your mind yet?..

Yeah. I made the mistake of expecting efficiency from everyone instead of just focusing on what each player does individually well.

I looked at Ariza's offensive numbers from last season instead of looking at the impact his defense would bring to the team.

Same thing with Willie Green and Jason Smith. Green and Smith won't ever put up good efficiency numbers, but they both have specific roles to the team which are valuable and its showing.

I also hated Okafor and his contract, but he's bringing the wood in the paint. He did a good job defensively against Nene, Duncan, and Yao. If he can continue to be a presence in the paint, it will make the team strong defensively.

I was also skeptical of a first year coach in Monty Williams, but he's really doing a good job in preparing the team and using certain guys in certain situations. The Hornets don't have a set rotation when it comes to the bench, but instead bring in whoever is needed at the time. I like that kind of flexibility.

Killakobe81
11-04-2010, 08:44 PM
that is what you get for caring about efficiency numbers so much. Paul is very efficient and has the ball the majority of the time and makes the other guys a little more eficient by "proxy". you guys needed a wing defender like Ariza. he was miscast in Houston, with NOLA he is back in his sweet spot. Paul and Trevor will punish teams for lazy passes on the perimeter. Do i think nola is a title contender? No. But they are much better thn many thought myself included. But it's STILL very early.

You're right. Certain guys aren't going to be "efficient", but they can still have value to teams whether its defense, perimeter shooting, rebounding, etc.

Hornets aren't a title contender because they're not as good as the Lakers. Lakers are the only title contenders in the West because no one appears to be their equal. It's a fact I can live with. Same with Boston and Miami. Those two teams are title contenders with Orlando a level below them. Anyway, back to the Hornets. They're not on par with the Lakers, but they're not any worse than any other teams in the West. I'm comfortable saying that. I don't think Dallas or the Spurs are that much better if any better at all.

Of course they can be a top 4 in the West, Ghazi. Lakers are the best team, but it's a toss-up after that. Health will play a big part. Otherwise, there's not much separating the other playoff contenders.

The Hornets playing very well this early didn't surprise me at all. CP3 has a chip on his shoulder and just like the Spurs' Jefferson, he would love to bounce back from a down season last year.

In the Spurs vs. Hornets game, CP3 is surely missing Chandler out there. He used to just lob a pass after a screen to a rolling Chandler. Without Chandler, Okafor and West aren't just athletic or quick enough to do that at all.

The Hornets are impressive right now, and any team with a legit superstar can never be counted out. Spurs, Mavs, Hornets are the only teams to ever win the Southwest Division and it's no surprise (Duncan, Nowitzki, Paul).
