"To have a shot, we have to defend better"

SAN ANTONIO.- After the preseason es hard to know what are our chances. Generally those warm-up games are used to check players or game styles, and specially in our case, because Pop likes to take a good look at the new players and have us play just a while. Or sometimes to play a whole game using zone defense. Anyway, we know who we are, what we play and what are goals are. Right now, we are a little off-radar, we can't consider ourselves among the candidates. To have a shot we need to defend better than last year. We can't have just about anybody get to a 100 points, like last season. It's clear the Lakers are above everyone else, but I don't know if we can beat them in a 7 game series. We don't have the same chances we had 5 years ago, but we still have a great squad and a lot of possibilities.

The game plan is the same as last year, not to depend so much on the pick and roll and low post game, and try to have a quicker, face to the basket game.

Personally I feel really well, although after 2 months in the gym, weights and vitamin suplements and food complements, I still weight 90kg (198 lbs) like 10 years ago! It's hard, but I can't get above that historical weight. We are going to see how the season goes, for now I've been taking it easy, not a lot of travelling, enjoying the twins and family, but the dance is about to start... We have to *pack and unpack* every day! Uff

*Not sure if this is what he meant, it can mean a whole different thing in Argentina

As for the competition, after the Lakers we are all waiting what happens with Miami, team sensation since the arrival of Lebron James and Chris Bosh, plus a few good role players. It won't be easy for them to play and fit together; It will depend on that.

Before I forget, I want to tell you how happy I am that Fabricio (Oberto) agreed with Portland. Selfishly I say that I like to have him close and play at least 4 times a year and eat together. Luisito (Scola) is also happy that he landed on the Western Conference. Oberto does whatever the coach asks, defense, rebounds, team play, but it seems like everyone looks at the stats and point scored to hire them. It's a great contradiction from coaches. Fortunately he got a good team where there are 2 injured big man and he'll get a chance to play. Well, Oberto came to the west (was in Washington) but we lost Chapu (Nocioni), who went from Sacramento to Philadelphia.

A lot of people ask about the salary problem in the NBA and the possibility of a lockout from the owners, and they decide to close arenas and training facilities. I don't think it happens this year because, although negotiations aren't going that well, the current agreement last until the end of june, when the seasons ends. The owners want to lower salaries trying to redistribute profit and we don't accept the situation is so dramatic. Last season wasn't that bad economically. Plus, we are against a fixed salary cap, no exceptions and salaries no longer guaranteed. Those issues seem out of the question.

my translation:

After the preseason it’s difficult to know what our real chances to win the championship are. Generally, those warm up games are utilized to try new players and/or play new systems, and in our case in particular, Pop likes to analyze the new players and not give us too many minutes either. Sometime he does things like playing zone defense the entire game too. Anyway, we know who we are; our style and what we pretend is very clear. Nowadays we’re flying under the radar, we can’t consider ourselves contenders. To have any chances we need to defend better than last season. Not anybody should be able to score 100 points on us as it happened last year. It’s clear that the Lakers seem to be a step ahead everybody else, but I’m not sure we would lose a 7 game series with them. Maybe our chances are not the same as 5 years ago, but we still have a deep roster and lots of possibilities.

The game philosophy is the same as last year, do not abuse of the pick and roll and low post game and try to have a more vertical offense, faster.

Personally I am feeling very well, though after 2 months of Gym workouts, weight lifting, vitamins and meal complements I’m still 198 pounds just like 10 years ago! It enrages me that I can never surpass that historic weight. We will see how the season develops, I have been quiet thus far; not a lot of traveling and enjoying the twins, the family but the dance is about to start… You have to pack and unpack daily now! Uff.

About the competition itself, after the Lakers I think we will all be watching what happens with Miami. They’re the sensation team with the arrival of LeBron James and Chris Bosh apart from their good role players. It will not be easy to play together and complement each other for them; their chances depend on how well that works.

Before I forget, I would like to tell you that I’m really happy that Fabricio (Oberto) was able to reach an agreement with Portland. Selfishly I confess that I’d prefer to have him closer and know that at least 4 times a year we are going to play each other and also have dinner before or after the games. Luisito (Scola) is also really happy that he is going to be playing on the West conference. Oberto does all what a coach asks from you, he plays defense, rebounds, plays team ball but it seems that everybody here only focus on statistics and scored points to hire new players. That is a contradiction among the coaches. Luckily he will be playing for a good team which has two of their centers injured and he will have chances to play. Oberto came to the west (he used to be in Washington) but we lost Chapu (Nocioni) to the East as he was transferred from Sacramento to Philadelphia.

Everybody is asking about the possible lockout in the NBA and the next Collective Bargain Agreement, that meaning that the owner of the teams, unhappy with the lack of agreement with the players, may decide to close the stadiums and practice facilities. I don’t think it’s going to happen this year because the negotiations are still tight and nobody is willing to give up, the current CBA is in place until the end of June when the season is over. The owners want to lower the salaries and search new methods to distribute the earnings and we are not getting over with the fact that the situation is that dramatic. Last season wasn’t very bad economically. More so, we deny the fixed salary cap, without exceptions, and that salaries would stop being guaranteed. Those two issues seem to be irreconcilable.
