UTSA debate team is No. 1 in nation in varsity and junior varsity divisions First place: Michael Stroud, Michael Ely, Jordan Nerison, Tia Robertson

(Oct. 26, 2010)--After a weekend tournament in Kansas City where Roadrunner debaters placed first in both the varsity and junior varsity divisions, UTSA rose from fourth place in the nation to first in one ranking system and second in another.

Michael Stroud and partner Michael Ely took first place in the Kansas City tournament. Stroud won the First Speaker award. The pairing was voted most congenial in the tournament. Another varsity team, Austin Montee and Justin King, won four preliminary debates and advanced to elimination rounds. Montee won the Seventh Speaker award. Another UTSA debater, Tyler Colwell, paired with Michael Tahmoressi, won the 10th Speaker award.

In the junior varsity division, Jordan Nerison and Tia Robertson advanced to elimination rounds where they won the final round placing first. Nerison won the Fifth Speaker award. Also competing in the junior varsity division, Brianna Roberts and Emil Calhoun, battled their way through six rounds in their second tournament since making the step up from the novice division.

UTSA debate coach Skip Eno won the Amy Fugate Leadership Award for lifetime contributions to the collegiate debate community.

The Roadrunners are in first place in the National Debate Tournament -- NDT rankings in two categories, overall debate (all divisions) and varsity -- the first time UTSA has ranked in the top five in this elite championship-level ranking system. In the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) rankings, UTSA sits in second place behind Liberty University by a scant two points.

The debate team at UTSA leads top national debate powerhouses from, Oklahoma (fourth), Harvard (sixth), Emory (10th), California, Berkeley (11th), UT Austin (24th), Dartmouth (54th), and Kentucky (58th). They lead other regional programs from Baylor (13th), Trinity (50th) and UT Dallas (57th).

Harvard University will be the site of UTSA's next debates Oct. 29-Nov. 2.

how do you decide who wins a debate?

panel of judges?

seems to me like it's a subjective gray area and there are no real winners...if both sides do a good job.

mental masturbation for people to jerk off to trophies and "accomplishments" for resumes.
