I'm a SoCal Spurs fan. I pay more attention to the Lakers than the Mavs, and since I'm not from Texas, the geographical rivalry is meaningless to me.

And why would Spurs fans hate the Heat? The Spurs have never met them in the post-season.

As for you not being from Texas it doesnt matter the Rox and Mavs are your team's rivals. i was a So-Cal Cowboys fan before I moved here, and yet i still hated the Redskins. So a fan of UNC has to live there to hate duke? OR the nations Yankee fans need to live in NYC to hate Boston? that makes no sense. I get why you hate the Lakers being a Spur fan in Los angeles ...but the rest of your argument is faulty you just like to talk shit ...

You probably thought that post was epic win when you submitted it, but it's not.

Prior to '06, the Spurs never really have had a bitter post-season rivalry with the Mavs. A rivalry only becomes such when both teams are playoff caliber and each has won at least one important series. Before 06, the Spurs enjoyed a 2-0 post-season lead over the Mavs. Simply put, there was no rivalry there beside the geographical and division one.

Meanwhile, the Lakers and Spurs have met 4 times in the WCF and 5 times in the 2nd round, the Spurs winning 2 of those 2nd round match ups on the way to a title. The Lakers are much more of a rival, definitely.

The Rockets are a rival. But the Spurs haven't met them in the playoffs for 15 years, so that matchup has lost a lot of its heat.

And lol at comparing the historic, inter-conference rivalries of college basketball to the NBA. It's an entirely different context and doesn't apply.

And no, you don't have to live in a particular area to appreciate the rivalry between two teams, but the teams do have to often meet in the playoffs. Just because a team is from the same state doesn't automatically produce a rivalry. The Lakers and Golden State play in the same state, but there is zero rivalry there. So do the Kings and the Lakers, and aside from '02, there's not much of a rivalry there. The Miami Heat always considered the Knicks their main rival, despite Orlando being 200 miles away. If teams that play in the same state don't have a rivalry with nationwide appeal, all that's left is the geographical rivalry that only the native residents can really get into.
