WALTHAM, Mass. -- Boston Celtics (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=bos) center Shaquille O'Neal (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=614) (right knee bruise) sat out his second consecutive practice session Monday and, while he traveled with the team to Detroit, coach Doc Rivers did not expect him to be available when Boston visits the Pistons on Tuesday night.
"I doubt if he plays, but we'll see," Rivers said.

Barring an overnight setback, Jermaine O'Neal (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=615) (sore left knee) will return to action after missing Friday's game against the New York Knicks (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=nyk) and should start in Shaq's place. Jermaine O'Neal went through a full practice session for the second straight day and is eager to log some extended minutes after a cocktail of injuries (hamstring, back, wrist, and knee) that has limited him since the start of training camp.

"I'm going to play whatever Doc wants me to play," said Jermaine O'Neal. "I haven't been able to get a lot of minutes in the preseason and I'm not playing a lot so far in the regular season, so I am a little itchy. But it's a long season and that's something we talk a lot about here, it's not about how you do at the beginning of the year."

"He had a good practice and he'll play," Rivers said. "Obviously, it could swell or something. But right now, he looked good."

Jermaine O'Neal said he thinks the ability to log extended minutes with the first unit could help him snap out of his season-opening funk and find a rhythm that has so far escaped him. Even when healthy, he hasn't been able to stay on the court very long, fouling out in a mere 12 minutes against Cleveland -- the same game after which his latest knee injury flared up. But he thinks he's over the hump.

"It feels that way," said O'Neal. "It's been one thing after another. It's probably the only span of my career where I've dealt with multiple issues."
As for Shaq, he spent another day in the pool, keeping his wind up by swimming alongside Kendrick Perkins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=2018) and strength and conditioning coach Bryan Doo. That limited the wear and tear on a knee bruised during a fourth-quarter collision with Amare Stoudemire (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1727) on Friday night. Shaq said he's waiting for the soreness to subside before diving back into action.

"It feels a little better," he said. "It's a little sore to push off. Once it gets to the point where I can push off with little or no pain, then I'll be ready.
"As you get older, it takes time for your body to replenish the chlorophyll. I heard that yesterday on the Planet Channel, so I just wanted to throw that out."

For Boston, it really doesn't matter as long as he serviceable late in the season.

The jokes on you HarlemHo. When was the last time Shaq played 82 games? Was it his MVP year in 1999? The Celtics will pace themselves all year. Shaq will get his requisite 15-20 games off (which will keep him fresh come playoff time). KG will get a couple games off because Big Baby is an adequate replacement. JO will be used sparingly. All of this is in an effort to keep them old bodies fresh all year. Then in January or so, Porkins will return and take about a month or so just to get back into game shape. He's young so he will good to go by the playoffs. All they need are like 4-5 minute "spurts" to wear down your short, soft, paper thin ass frontline.

Each of their older players will have plenty of rest all year. That's why they have depth. Meanwhile, the Hype will go balls to the wall all year and flame out in the 2nd round because they don't know how to pace themselves and have no quality depth. The season is a marathon, not a sprint.

So don't worry about Shaq "holding up" because the Celtics made the Finals last year without him. The Celtic bums don't need him to play major minutes. Nor do they need him to play all 82. When the games count he will be ready to take a shit on y'all front line along with Porkins, JO, and Big Baby. Y'all in trouble. The first night was just a microcosm of what is going to happen to y'all in the playoffs. :toast

And just in case you were wondering... The 16x champs have depth and quality backups at all 5 positions. For example, Kobe won't have to play 40+ mpg as in years past for us to win - but he can and will if need be. He is averaging 32mpg so far. Fish is averaging 26mpg. What will that do for our 5x championship winning back court? Make them fresh at the end of the year. They'll be ready to kick whoever asses that comes out of the EC. :toast

LOL Harlem laughing at Celts injury woes ...

1. bad karma to mock another team's injuries

2. didnt the heat have the first set of injuries with Wade in pr-season and Miller missing extended time?

He is not laughing at their injuries. He is just stating what he thought all along that celtics are old and the regular season will sooner or later start to wear them out leaving them with no gas come playoff time

You maybe right ... but I dont even think laughing at others in regard to this is good karma. But we shall see injuries strike both the young and the old ...

I knew shaq would miss games ...hell the suns deserve one of those UCLA medical science awards for keeping him healthy and in shape for a whole season ...

i personally hope most teams are relatively healthy come playoff time, ESPECIALLY the Rox, Celtics, Blazers, spurs, Lakers and Heat so there is no whining come playoff time ...
