Thats complete and utter bullshit, btw. If you're a progressive and you hate Nancy Pelosi then you're out of your mind. Any hope you ever had of getting actual progressive legislation passed was through her running of the House?

You know why the GOP hates Pelosi so much? She ran the House like a GOP speaker would. She got shit DONE. If Harry Reid was half as effective as her we'd have actual health care legislation and would have gotten a much better Stimulus Bill.

I could give two shits if she congratulates the GOP. She did her job as speaker and she did it well.

Depends on what you consider the job of a Speaker to be. Personally, I'd consider the job of a Speaker to work towards as much consensus in the house as possible, and she failed miserably at that (there's been no real attempt at that since pre 9/11 though).

If you think the job of the Speaker is to ramrod their party's legislation, she was an excellent one.

"consensus in the house"

Dems gave lots of concessions, to the point of gutting, on health care and financial reform, and got absolutely nothing back.

Now the Repugs will continue to gut and defund the rule-writing on health care and financial reform, and The American People will continue to be fleeced.

Pelosi sucks, but she's hardly the reason the Democrats got their asses handed to them yesterday. The Democrats are the reason the Democrats got waxed. They ran on a bunch of hype about shit changing in Washington with progressive legislation aimed at taking the nation back from the banks and insurance companies, and instead we got a carbon-copy of the Republicans corporate welfare state.

lulz, they gave concessions to other dems and paid off all of the rest. Had they gone the progressive route, they would have been curbstomped past the point of sweetheart deals.

Obama can say the reps are the party of no and did not work with him on being bipartisan, but most objective voters know he ignored much of what the repubs requested for health care reform.

Uh? The way she got the party aligned was to keep handing out perks in every legislation that pass through her hands. That's how the Healthcare legislation, among others, turned into a monstrosity overnight which ended up being disgusting to both the left and the right.

She represents everything that's opposite to the Hope and Change message that elected the prez.

The healthcare legislation that was passed through the House was anything but hated on the left. Healthcare legislation got fucked due to the Senate - not the house.

As for your 2nd point, you can't change shit unless you pass legislation. She got her part done. The Senate did not. Nancy Pelosi makes a great target for the GOP but she did her job as speaker and she did it well.

Please. She was a dealer, not a leader.
And what 'change' did she promote passing shit like the bank bailout?

She didn't know how to be the opposition, and once she was the administration, she didn't know how to keep the party in line without some massive wheeling and dealing (with her own party, obviously).

This was bar none one of the worst Congress I can recall, and her being one of the leaders of it is not surprising at all.

Woah woah woah. Since when was Pelosi the driving force behind the bank bailout? Thats some revisionist shit right there. I seem to remember one Henry Paulson scaring the shit out of EVERYONE.

Find me the progressives who were upset with the way she handled health care. She got the job done regarding legislation in her house of congress. That involves wheeling and dealing. None of this is somehow groundbreaking or unheard of in congress.

Yeah, Obama campaigned on hope and changed. If you thought that meant the way laws were passed was going to change then you were going to be disappointed. In any event, campaign slogans aren't usually the best of marks to set in judging lawmakers - especially when they're not their own slogans.

Virtually every piece of legislation passed from this congress was substantially different in its House version. When the senate completely grabs you by the balls and changes every single thing you do and makes it worse, I'm not going to lay the blame at your feet.

Admittedly, I have no idea what you are talking about here. If this is something currently going on (can't find anything about it), then it's gotta be in the Virginia state laws, which means they aren't bypassing laws they don't like (or if you'd rather it's a state problem and not related to the arguments posed at the federal level).

In terms of what Republicans in the federal government were suggesting, this isn't anywhere near what anyone was suggesting. All the interstate things involved one of 2 things. The most prominent was moving regulation of insurance to the national level (something insurance companies have asked for repeatedly over the last decade at least). The other was allowing small groups to band together across state lines to buy group policies (which would still be subject to various state requirements, ie you'd have to go by the most strict amount the states or have split policies in the supergroup, or would still involve nationalizing the regulations).

Yeah - you want to know why they want to nationalize the regulations? Take one big mfering hint from my posts.

They don't like the regulations in place in certain states so instead they want to get around them. How about we let the people Montana decide what they want from their policies and we let the people in Texas do the same instead of letting places with high populations run roughshod over smaller states.

I'm sorry - isn't the GOP supposed to be in favor of states rights? Except when big insurance can benefit, right?

I wasn't sure which thread to post this in because it literally could go in many but it conveys a thought I really really believe is true and shows why I don't think Pelosi was terrible.

http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/03/nobody-cares-about-process/

Nobody Cares About Process
Urk. I just gave up on the presidential press conference. When Obama declared that Americans rejected Democrats in part because “We were in such a hurry to get things done that we didn’t change how things got done,” I checked out.

Nobody cares about this stuff — they care about results. Nobody really cares about earmarks; they’re just code for spending less (less on somebody else, of course, not me). Nobody cares about civility and bipartisanship, which in practice are code for Democrats giving in to Republican demands. Nobody cares about parliamentary maneuvers: we can argue about the role of health reform in the election, but I bet not one voter in 50 knows or cares that it was passed using reconciliation (as were the sacred Bush tax cuts we must, must retain).

If Obama had used fancy footwork and 2 AM sessions to pass a big public works program, and this program had brought unemployment down, Republicans would be screaming about the process — and Democrats would have comfortably held control of Congress. Remember the voter backlash against the way Medicare drug benefits were passed? Neither do I.

Oh, by the way — nobody cares about the deficit, either.

Wanna vbookie bet that those comments happen far less often from here on out?

To be honest, this might make me dislike Obama a little less. I was always of the opinion that one party controlling everything was a bad idea so at least now we have some checks on everything.

However, the funny thing really is that it doesn't really matter which party is in control, neither of them will do the right thing for our country and I think they've both proven that over the past few decades.

Yeah - you want to know why they want to nationalize the regulations? Take one big mfering hint from my posts.

BS. They want to nationalize regulations so they only need 1 policy form, instead of 30-40 policy forms with a few hundred endorsement variants (trust me, I know how much of a pain in the ass they are and have a good idea how much they cost to maintain).

State by state regulation of insurance is asinine, and the insurance companies realize that nationalizing it is going to make many more markets more strict than it will loosen the others.

They don't like the regulations in place in certain states so instead they want to get around them. How about we let the people Montana decide what they want from their policies and we let the people in Texas do the same instead of letting places with high populations run roughshod over smaller states.

Blue Cross offers policies across the country, but has to maintain several child companies to deal with insurance regulations in several states. Same with just about every Big Insurance company.

Big insurance is pretty much the definition of interstate commerce, so the US has constitutional claim to regulate. Plus, I'd love to get rid of all those dumb ass child companies that insurance companies use to play a shell game with profits and loss in the US corporate "magic accounting" scheme.

That's because the democrats allow for dissenting opinions. If you don't vote the way of the GOP nearly every time, in unison, you are ostracized. The reason the GOP gets shit done is because the entire party is instructed to go one way with no room for anything other than what they're told to support, with a few notable exceptions.

Democrats vote far left, middle left, center left, and center right. When these opinions clash, the republicans come in and just vote it down unanimously, without any individual thought or concern. They're like the Borg of politics.
