48 Minutes of Hell

Who would’ve thought four shots from one spot on the floor could mean so much? If the Richard Jefferson (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/spurs-stats-team-chemistry-richard-jefferson) reclamation (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/building-up-from-zero-richard-jefferson-finds-his-place) project (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/richard-jefferson-getting-comfortable-in-san-antonio-spurs-offense) needed a tidy little bow on it, RJ obliged on Wednesday night at the US Airways Center.

Jefferson hit four of five 3-pointers on his way to 28 points for the San Antonio Spurs in their 112-110 win over the Suns. Jefferson hit six of six free throws and grabbed four rebounds on the night too.

Tim has a masterful 25 and 17 night and you barely read or hear about it in the national media. Garnett opens up his big, stupid, fucking mouth again and there's a media firestorm. Where's the justice? I truly hate the mainstream sports media. And is anybody else sick to death of hearing about the fucking Heat and Lakers already?

Last night ESPN had the Lakers vs. Kings in what was a very predictable, dull and boring Laker blowout instead of showing what could be called a classic Spurs vs. Suns game. Again, the misplaced priorities of the networks.

Some post game quotes.

Jefferson’s 3-pointers lead Spurs over Suns (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/recap?gid=2010110321)

Richard Jefferson flashed his old form at the right time for the San Antonio Spurs.

Jefferson hit four fourth-quarter 3-pointers, including the go-ahead basket with 1:38 remaining, and the Spurs edged the Phoenix Suns 112-110 Wednesday night.

“It was just one of those things where the ball was coming my way,” Jefferson said. “My teammates made some great passes, they left me open a few times and I was able to knock them down.”

Jefferson was largely disappointing in his first season in San Antonio, averaging 12.3 points and 4.4 rebounds. Coach Gregg Popovich and the Spurs staff paced Jefferson through what Popovich termed “a lot of ridiculous drills” to help the 10-year veteran regain his form.

“We worked him all summer long on basic fundamentals to get some rust off of him and get him back to the solid habits he had at Arizona,” Popovich said.

Jefferson, though, credited open looks more than summer school for his success against Phoenix.

“Every time I make two 3s, people ask me about that and Manu (Ginobili) starts laughing,” Jefferson said. “Coming here, the offense is different and you have to learn how to be aggressive in this offense. That’s something that last year was tough. (Now) I know where I’m supposed to be and you can focus on different things.”

Jefferson finished with 28 points, Tim Duncan had 25 and Ginobili added 18 for the Spurs, who won in Phoenix for the first time since Jan. 29, 2009.

Jason Richardson scored 21 points, Hakim Warrick added 19 off the bench and Steve Nash also had 19 for the Suns, who have lost consecutive games for the first time since Jan. 25-26. Phoenix is 1-3 for the first time since 2006-07.

“We’ve just got to keep our heads up,” Richardson said. “We know this is not a sprint. It’s a marathon. It’s a long season. Nobody’s got their head down. We’ve got a long way to go and every game we get better.”

Jefferson hit three straight 3-pointers from the left corner to give the Spurs a 103-97 lead with 6:15 to play.

But after a free throw by Warrick, Nash sank a 10-footer, Warrick added a driving layup and Richardson hit consecutive baskets, the last off an alley-oop pass from Nash, to cap a 9-0 run that gave the Suns a 106-103 lead with 3:31 left.

“We had a little bit of miscommunication, especially during that stretch when Jefferson hit the three 3s,” Warrick said.

Antonio McDyess made two free throws to pull the Spurs within one before Jefferson hit his fourth 3-pointer from the same left corner to give San Antonio a 108-106 lead.

“Defensively we finally got some stops,” Duncan said. “They run that pick-and-roll over and over and over again and for a while we couldn’t do anything with it. Coming down the stretch, the last two or three minutes, we got two or three stops. That changed the game for us.”

The teams traded the lead 13 times in the first half before settling for a 50-all tie.

San Antonio opened the game’s largest lead early in the third quarter. Duncan’s 17-footer just above the free throw line gave San Antonio a 67-56 advantage, but Phoenix slowly whittled the deficit to 81-79 on Richardson’s two free throws with 23 seconds left.

“We just have to find a way to finish the game,” said Suns coach Alvin Gentry. “We’ve just got to continue to try and plug away and get a little better.”

Notes: Jefferson was 6 for 6 from the floor in the fourth quarter. The Spurs missed eight of their first 10 3-point attempts before making their last five, all in the game’s final 6:59. San Antonio beat Phoenix for the second time in eight meetings, including last spring’s four-game sweep at the hands of the Suns in the Western Conference semifinals. The Suns hadn’t lost consecutive home games since December 21-23, 2009. Warrick recorded Phoenix’s seventh double-digit scoring effort off the bench this season. Phoenix didn’t have a double-digit scorer off the bench last season until its fourth game. The Suns said an article appearing in a local weekly newspaper that said Nash was going to retire to run for mayor of his native Victoria, British Columbia, was a hoax.

I'll take the win, and Richard came through with clutch shooting at the end, when we desperately needed to get some points since our offense was stagnant.

That said, if the defense doesn't improve drastically as the season progresses, it's all fool's gold.

Phoenix Suns rally falls short, lose to San Antonio Spurs

Tuesday's Suns practice ended prematurely on account of a lack of energy in the building.

The power did not go out. Suns coach Alvin Gentry just didn't like what he was seeing and sent his team home with a message to bring whatever it held back when it played Wednesday night.

The Suns did. They found a lineup that stopped San Antonio consistently for the first time but could not find their shot and lost their lead and the game 112-110 at US Airways Center.

Steve Nash and Jason Richardson each missed four consecutive shots down the stretch and the Suns did not score on six trips after taking a 106-103 lead with 3:30 to go.

Down 103-97 with 6:14 to go, Gentry inserted Nash, Richardson, Grant Hill, Hakim Warrick and Channing Frye and sat Hedo Turkoglu after another non-impact game of six points, two rebounds and no assists in 17 minutes.

The lineup played outstanding help defense against Tim Duncan with Robin Lopez, the usual defensive matchup, also watching after a rough 12-minute outing that prompted rookie Garret Siler's debut. San Antonio scored with ease most of the game but went four minutes without scoring in the fourth to give back the lead. But a 7-0 run, punctuated by Richard Jefferson's fourth 3-pointer of his 18-point quarter, sent the Suns to their first consecutive regular-season defeats since January. The Suns start a season 1-3 for the first time since 2006-07 but have lost to teams that are 11-2 combined.

"I think we feel like we can beat these teams," Nash said. "I guess we'll play at a level we hope to play at at some stage during the season. We've been a little bit searching for who we are and what we are and that's natural at this time of the season with all the additions we made. I feel optimistic. I feel we're getting better. We're showing different situations that we've improved in. We just got to keep working and something good is going to happen to us."

With "tired legs" and a Spurs defense begging him to shoot, Nash was 8 of 22 from the field for 19 points, seven assists and six rebounds with potential assists dropped or unexpected. Goran Dragic had more assists (eight) and scored eight points in 15 minutes. Richardson scored 21, and Hill had 15 points and eight rebounds and Warrick had 19 points.

The Spurs were the running team more often, given a running start by a bevy of Suns misses. San Antonio had its problems taking care of the ball but took it to the Suns inside, even though Phoenix actually was the better second-chance team to make for 37 percent shooting through 2 1/2 quarters.

A Dragic-led offense had ball movement and increased energy. The Suns bench made 17 of 28 shots while the starters went 24 for 64.

"At times, they out-toughed us and, at times, we got a little stagnant and it led to fast breaks," Hill said. "We were still right there in the game. I think, I hope, the mistakes can be corrected."
View from press row

The Garret Siler experiment began Wednesday night once Robin Lopez got three fouls in seven minutes. Siler was solid defensively, bothering Tim Duncan with his 300-plus-pound body and blocking two shots. When Siler sets a screen, it's like an eclipse. The rolling part is a work in progress, as seen by a nice roll on which he was fouled and by the flat-footed stare he gave to a Steve Nash lob.

RJ is definitely learning where he is supposed to be on fast breaks or regular sets. That corner is where bowen could always be found.
Tiago did well despite still learning the system,we saw some confidence when he backed down with a reverse layup.
Parker had some nice easy points to begin with, you could tell their aim was to clog up the paint early on. I think thats one reason why we didnt see them running. Did anyone else notice that? Usually nash is off and running especially off made baskets but this time, they wanted everyone by the basket to clog up the paint, and then to get the rebound but it kept them from their running game.
