Villanueva is no worse than what he was before he got that contract. If he is not worth the money he is being paid that does not make him a cancer, but the GM who signed him stupid.

Villanueva worked hard this off season and it shows on his mobility, he is also playing with more intent. Is he still a bad defender? Yes. Is he still soft? Yes. Does the fact that he didn't miraculously turn into something he wasn't to begin with make him a cancer? Absolutely not.

Villanueva is far from the type of signings as to why the NBA is losing money. He makes a little more than the MLE. He's a horrible defender and he doesn't rebound well for a big and he tweets too damn much. But by NBA standards, his contract is not crippling. You may hate the guy and think he's garbage. But contracts like the ones given out to Michael Redd, Rashard Lewis, Peja Stojakovic, and Gilbert Arenas are why the NBA is losing so much money. Max contracts and close to max contracts with guaranteed money to players who don't deserve it and/or don't live up to it. That's where way more money is lost by NBA teams.

With the new CBA looming, I think more than anything, a step needs to be made to limiting the number of years of guaranteed money. Maybe not all the way to how the NFL does it with signing bonuses and non-guaranteed contracts, but at least limiting the number of years of guaranteed money, so that hypothetically a 5 year contract for $100 million only has 3 years and $60 million guaranteed, then a team can either void the remainder of the contract or buyout the remainder at a fraction of the cost when a player doesn't live up to the contract. I know pro athletes are looking for security and in a high flying injury risk sport, they deserve some to a certain extent, but I see no problem with forcing NBA players to actually earn and deserve the money they make just like everybody else in the world does. Looking at the remainder of Gilbert Arenas' contract, no way in hell should he take home what's left on it.
