Someone asked earlier today if the 43 in the 4th was the biggest Spurs playoff quarter ever. I did some research and discovered that the answer is that it was (by a pretty wide margin), and it was tied for the Spurs most points in any playoff quarter. They had also scored 43 in the 2nd Quarter of Game 1 of the 1983 WCSF vs. Denver.

Sunday marked the 4th 40+ point quarter in Spurs playoff history, and was the first of those 4 that didn't come against Denver, and the first that occurred on the road. For the record, the other 40+ point quarters were (by my count at least):

43: 1983 WCSF v. DEN (Game 1, Qtr. 2)
43: 2005 WCF @ PNX (Game 1, Qtr. 4)
41: 1990 WCFR v. DEN (Game 1, Qtr. 1)
40: 1983 WCSF v. DEN (Game 5, Qtr. 3)

For those who might be interested, here are the Spurs biggest 4th quarters in playoff games:

43: 2005 WCF @ PNX (Game 1)
38: 1990 WCFR v. DEN (Game 1)
38: 1993 WCSF @ PNX (Game 2)
37: 1998 WCFR v. PNX (Game 3)
37: 1991 WCFR v. GST (Game 1)
37: 1981 WCSF v. HOU (Game 2)
36: 1999 WCSF @ LAL (Game 3)
36: 1983 WCSF v. DEN (Game 1)

Great job.

As far as fourth quarter scoring in the playoffs, I imagine the 43 points is going to be safe in the record books for a long while.

The Spurs scored 43 points in the fourth quarter of today's win over the Suns, equaling the second-highest fourth-quarter total in NBA history in a road victory.

The record is 47, set by the Nuggets in a 136-114 win over the Lakers in the 1985 Western Conference finals.

The other team to score 43 was the Hawks, in a 112-104 win over the Celtics in 1988.

From ESPN.

Excellent due-dilligence, FWD.

I seem to recall the Spurs giving up close to 50 against Run TMC in a playoffs fourth quarter. That one still hurts.

Moral: for a good time, play Denver or Phoenix in the playoffs.

especially that Game 1 of the 1983 WCSF -- Spurs had 43 in the 2nd quarter and 36 in the 4th on the way to dropping 152 on the Nuggets. In fact, the line from that game is amazing

DEN - 39 - 29 -37 - 28 - 133
SAS - 39 - 43 -34 - 36 - 152

even more amazingly, there were only 2 made three pointers in that game, both by Mike Dunleavy for the Spurs.

Game 1 of that series, in the 4th Quarter, the Spurs gave up 49, got outscored by 12 (49-37) and still won by 9. Of course, the 4th turned out to be a precursor of what was coming in the next three games . . . .
