ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Wednesday that the club will not pick up the mutual option on designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero for 2011 but is interested in re-signing the slugger.

Guerrero signed a contract last winter that included a mutual option for $9 million for 2011. But Daniels said neither side intended to pick up the option when the contract was drawn up.

"We had different payroll parameters then and the structure of the deal was part of that," Daniels said. "It was really a one-year contract."

In other words, the terms of the deal were a way to get Guerrero an extra $1 million after the season, which is what it cost the club to decline the option.

Guerrero, who earned $5.5 million in 2010, hit .300 in 2010 with 29 homers and a team-high 115 RBIs in 152 games. He stayed healthy one year after playing in just 100 games for the Los Angeles Angels. But the cleanup hitter batted just .220 in the postseason with no homers and six RBIs. He had 16 strikeouts in 59 at-bats, including 1-for-14 with five strikeouts in the World Series.

The Rangers hit just .190 as a team against the San Francisco Giants.

"He was important for us both on the field and in the clubhouse," Daniels said. "You look at him, Michael [Young] and Elvis [Andrus] as three guys that were basically in there every day. There's real value in that. We definitely see a scenario where Vlad could be back. We haven't sat down and talked specifics yet, but I imagine we will here relatively soon."
