Post game Quotes (http://www.nba.com/spurs/news/quotes_101103.html)
Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich
On the game - ”Down the stretch, Steve (Nash) heated up and Richard (Jefferson) heated up so they were both scoring back and forth. In a tight game anything can happen and we were fortunate enough to get it at the end.”
“You’ve got to score against Phoenix. Last year in the playoffs we couldn’t score. Last year their bench murdered our bench. They still have a great bench but hopefully ours is improving over last year. We’ve got some guys that can score and are a little more athletic. That’s where we really fell down last year and I think we have a chance to be better in that area this year. So we’ll see if it works out.”
Richard Jefferson
On the game - “It was a good night. It was just one of those things where the ball was coming my way and my teammates made some great passes. They left me open a few times and I was able to knock them down.”
On offseason work - “Coming here, the offense is different and you have to learn how to be aggressive in this offense. That’s something that last year was tough, and learning the defensive schemes and Pop is more focused on the defense, that’s where you get focused. This year I have a little better idea of the plays, the defensive assignments, where I’m supposed to be. We played the Suns in the playoffs so I know where I’m supposed to be and you can focus on different things.”
Tim Duncan
On the game - “He (Jefferson) played unbelievable, shot the ball great. He got to his corner and guys found him. He hits one and I think he hits two and at that point he’s just itching to get another shot up and he knocks down two more for us. He was really great in that fourth quarter. Defensively, we finally got some stops. They run that pick and roll over and over again and for a while we couldn’t do anything with it. Coming down the stretch , the last two or three minutes, we got two or three stops I think. That changed the game for us.”
Alvin Gentry
On the game - “ I thought we did a good job defensively for the most part. We battled— we came up with 16 offensive rebounds—all of those are positive. We just have to find a way to finish the game, we didn’t quite finish the game. You got to give them credit, they came up with some big plays. We just got to continue to try and plug away and get a little better.”
On the second unit - “I thought the second unit was starting to play much better. I thought Goran (Dragic) and those guys came in and did a great job. You know, (Jared Dudley is playing well). Hakim (Warrick) is starting to kind of figure out where he can fit in here—he is becoming a role guy and finishing at the basket. So, all of those things are positive. It’s still a loss, and there is nothing real good about a loss. But, I think we are making progress and will continue to work at it.”
Jason Richardson
On what needs to improve - “It’s just time. It’s still early in the season and guys have to get used to playing with each other. We have to communicate a little bit more on the court. Other than that, we played pretty well.”
On the season so far - “We just got to keep our heads up. We know this is not a sprint, it’s a marathon, it’s a long season. We still got seventy-something games left. Nobody’s got their head down. It’s early in the season. We’ve got a long way to go and every game we get better.”
Steve Nash
On the number of shot attempts - “Well I was shooting the ball plenty in the first half, I just couldn’t get them to go. My legs were a little tired tonight and I was just trying to compete and trying to fight for it and trying to make some plays for my teammates. We fought for it, didn’t have a great game, but I feel really good about our team. We’re playing hard, we’ve been in every game and we just aren’t quite clicking yet, so we have a lot of improving to do, which makes me feel optimisitic. “
