I have always been a take it or leave it as far as red velvet cake goes; it never tastes like anything other than just cake to me. And from the recipe, I now know that the red is just red and not a flavor! So really it could be any color you have velvet cake. Hmm, learn something new everyday....

I went to Max's here in Austin once with my gf. It was spendy for sure but the food and the wine were both really yummy.

There are two reasons I'd not go back on a romantic date:

(1) It's like someone dropped a bomb in there it was so loud. Me and my sweetie had to yell at each other across the table just to talk;

(2) The waitress was way too chummy/flirty. She sat down with us to take orders (fine, given how loud it was), but I could have done without the social chit-chat (about 5 minutes of small talk before she took our food order) and all the casual backscratching/touching throughout the evening. It may work on dumb/drunk assholes, but it was a little much for me.

(I have boundaries. Being touched by strangers at restaurants is one of them.)

FWIW, here in Austin Max's Wine Dive is more of a singles bar than a romantic dinner place. I've never been to the one in Houston, so I don't know if they vary the concept to suit the location. Quarry sounds perfect for it, though.

(be prepared to spend some $$$, y'all)
