On September 11th, 2001, America experienced the most terrible and deadly attack in its history. Yet, President Bush's response was to call on Americans to wait in long lines at airports, go shopping, or wrap their windows in plastic.
As President, John Kerry will have the courage to lead and call on all Americans to make our nation stronger. Whether it is protecting America from the threats of terrorism or addressing the problems we have at home, America's new challenges will not be met by the same old answers of big government or big tax cuts for the wealthy. John Kerry will call on all Americans - tapping into the idealism and ingenuity of Americans and putting it to work on building a safer, stronger, and more secure nation. Americans already make an enormous difference in their communities, volunteering, in Boys and Girls Clubs or homeless shelters. Many Americans do full time service. John Kerry believes that in these times, we need to bolster these efforts with a nationwide commitment to national service. Whether it is a Summer of Service for our teenagers, helping young people serve their country in return for college, or the Older Americans in Service program, John Kerry's plan will call on every American of every age and every background to serve. John Kerry will set a goal of one million Americans a year in national service within the next decade.

John Kerry Outlines Plan to Require Service for High School Students

Part of 100 days Plan to Enlist One Million Americans in National Service A Year

On September 11th, 2001, America experienced the most terrible and deadly attack in its history. John Kerry believes we need to think big and do better and get more young Americans serving the nation.

As part of his 100 day plan to change America, John Kerry will propose a comprehensive service plan that includes requiring mandatory service for high school students and four years of college tuition in exchange for two years of national service.

How did you find that link?

I can't find that same article through johnkerry.com directly... Could it be that they strategically watered down some of the language in time for their Bush Draft Scare platform?

Someone said they had seen it on the site but it had been archived.

I honestly don't have a clue if it's real or not. :)

Oh, but the "Contributions" link certainly works from there. :lol

I don't know... I'm skeptical of this one. It looks like it could be a fake... a reconstructing of this article. (http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/national_service/)

I could be wrong though... There's certainly no dead giveaway like a superscript or anything.

All of the links seem to work.... It's almost as though an entire John Kerry website was archived.

Now I'm just confused. I'll quit playing detective.

Yeah....I should have put the disclaimer:

I don't know an awful lot about the technical aspects of archiving, website stuff...etc. Waiting for NBADan to take is absurdly early in the morning tryst through the PolFor and explain, in great detail, why this couldn't possibly be real.

Damn, that touches my heart.

The highest form of service is military service. America's military is having trouble recruiting and is increasingly relying on the reserves for active duty. John Kerry believes we must change that. The complicated missions we face and technologies we use depend on it. In a Kerry Administration, no university that receives federal aid will be allowed to ban the ROTC from their campus, except for religious reasons. And the ROTC scholarship program will be adequately funded so that students can attend the college of their choice. John Kerry will also make modernizing our GI benefits a top priority, because no program has been more successful increasing educational opportunities for veterans while also providing an incentive for the best and brightest to make a career out of military

The site seems legit, but I think you guys are reading something into it that isn't there. W. proposed a version of the same thing. It's not a hidden draft proposal or anything like that, but a way that college age students can earn college credits and maybe a few extra bucks by serving in their communities. Studies have found that young people who are thought to help others continue to do so when they get older.

You are missing the point. Since when does anyone want forced "service"?

What part of this are we misinterpreting?

What part of this are we misinterpreting?

The part where W. has proposed the same thing except in parochial duty.

Ha. He did no such thing.

Some Components of Kerry's plan include:

Making community service mandatory for all high-school students.

Providing young people who give two years of national service the money they need for tuition at a four-year public college, for vocational classes, to start a business, or to make a down payment on a home.

Providing $2,000 stipends to older Americans who participate in 10 hours of service a week. The stipends can be given to a relative or other young person for educational purposes.

Giving teenagers age 13 to 17 a $500 educational grant for performing service work during the summer. The teenagers would be supervised by AmeriCorps members.

Save Americorps (http://www.saveamericorps.org/legis_presPol.htm)

Sounds real dubious to me.

:rolleyes

Oh so he changed his position. What's new?

The paragraphs in the article SW posted do not sound like community service. Words like "enlist" and "national service" don't typically apply to painting houses and cleaning up litter.

LOL,

I don't know what's funnier - Demo scare tactics about a Bush led draft when they're proposing it themselves

OR

Dan trying to spin mandatory national service as some sort of glorified Habitat for Humanity project.
