Rasho is playing very well. He looks great! He is actually starting, and he and Spanoulis play well together.

He is averaging about 10 points and 6 or 7 rebounds in 18 or 19 minutes in Euroleague games. Not surprisingly, he is shooting 61% FG and 60% FT.

I have not watched any of the Greek League games but his FG% is even higher there.

In an intense battle between Turkish Airlines Euroleague giants, Olympiacos clinched a Quarterfinal Playoffs spot and became the Top 16 Group H champion by downing Fenerbahce Ulker 65-80 in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday night. Olympiacos improved to 4-1 and overcame its 14-point loss against Fener in Top 16 Game 1 to win Group H, getting the home court advantage in the upcoming Quarterfinal Playoffs... Zoran Erceg paced the winners with 21 points. Rasho Nesterovic and Loukas Mavrokefalidis each added 16, Vassilis Spanoulis had 12 but Theo Papaloukas became the game hero by sinking the tie-break winning three-pointer at the buzzer...An outstanding Mavrokefalidis and Nesterovic fueled a 6-25 run that allowed Olympiacos to get the lead for good, 55-64. Spanoulis, Nesterovic and a buzzer-beating triple off the glass by Papaloukas allowed the Reds to get back home as the Group H champion.

... Mavrokefalidis stayed on fire with a close jumper in the lane and soon banked in a running shot to give his team a 55-58 edge early in the fourth quarter. Fenerbahce kept struggling to find open shots and Nesterovic scored around the basket to make it a five-point game, 55-60. Fenerbahce had been scoreless for more than 4 minutes and Papaloukas banked in a four-meter shot that forced the hosts to call timeout at 55-62. A reverse layup by Nesterovic capped a 0-13 Olympiacos run, as Ukic tried to change things with a quick basket. Erceg took over with a long two-pointer that Sean May erased with a dunk. Spanoulis banked in an acrobatic shot but Tomas answered from downtown to give Fener some hope, 62-68, with 3 minutes left. Papaloukas scored in penetration and a dunk by Nesterovic sealed the outcome, 62-72. Both teams now fought for points differential, as Spanoulis and Nesterovic gave the Reds a 65-77 and Olympiacos regained possession with 31 seconds left. Erceg missed from downtown but a key offensive rebound by Kostas Papanikolaou allowed Papaloukas to beat the buzzer with a circus three-pointer off the glass, enough for Olympiacos to become the Top 16 Group H champion!

Olympiacos pulled away late to down Zalgiris 78-64 at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Thursday for the Reds’ fifth straight Turkish Airlines Euroleague win. Although the fate of both teams was sealed last week, they both played hard and the game had plenty of tension until a 10-0 fourth quarter run secured the hosts’ victory. Rasho Nesterovic paced Olympiacos with 20 points and 3 blocked shots. Yotam Halperin and Jamon Gordon added 12 apiece with the former dishing 5 assists and the latter grabbing 6 rebounds. Vassilis Spanoulis scored 10 for Olympiacos, which finished the Top 16 as the Group H champ and will face Montepaschi Siena in the Quarterfinal Playoffs.

...All the way it was Nesterovic keeping Olympiacos ahead with his mid-range shooting. A no-look Papaloukas pass for a Nesterovic layup gave the latter 10 third-quarter points and the Reds a 56-47 advantage.

...Nesterovic blocked Plaisted twice to draw cheers from the crowd and Gordon lifted the lead to 15 from the line. Nesterovic soon added his 20th point to cap a 10-0 run that essentially sealed the outcome at 76-57 with two minutes remaining.

Sportingbet MVP for February: Rasho Nesterovic, Olympiacos Pireaus
Maximum effect in a minimum amount of time is the definition of efficiency on the basketball court. Add to that great timing in crucial games and it could also define the difference that center Rasho Nesterovic of Olympiacos Pireaus, Euroleague Basketball's choice as the Sportingbet MVP for February, made for his team over the second half of the Top 16. After a one-week break in the phase, the Reds faced back-to-back road games against the teams directly above and below them in their group. But in both games, they were behind heading into the final quarter. Nesterovic helped solve each of those dilemmas. He scored 10 points in the final quarter - including a memorable trio of tip-ins - to hand Power Electronics Valencia its only home defeat in three months. The next week, Nesterovic did it again, reeling off 9 fourth-quarter points against Fenerbahce Ulker, which was unbeaten in the Top 16 until then. Although statistics and performance ratings are taken into consideration for the award, they alone do not determine who is honored. The winner is named by Euroleague Basketball based on his and his team's performance. The award for February was based upon the two Top 16 games played during that month and another played on March 3. Olympiacos returned from the Top 16 break facing a challenge to its aspiration of winning Group H. Valencia had not lost a Euroleague home game since Svetislav Pesic took over as head coach almost three months earlier. Nesterovic recorded 3 blocks in the game's first 18 minutes as Olympiacos took a 27-32 lead. Valencia rallied and led 59-53 early in the final quarter, however. Nesterovic re-entered the game then and soon turned around the scoreboard with a series of spectacular put-backs of his teammates' misses - one each in minute 36, 37 and 38 - giving Olympiacos in the lead for good on its way to a 79-85 victory. Nesterovic finished with 16 points, went 7-for-8 shooting two-pointers, matched the game-high of 6 rebounds, and posted the highest performance index rating, 22, all in just 23 minutes' work. A week later, on the road against Fenerbahce Ulker, the Reds had a score to settle, namely their 14-point home loss when the teams first met in the Top 16's opening week. Again, Olympiacos was in trouble, trailing 49-37 midway through the third quarter. This time, Nesterovic helped take the rally his teammates had started and, with his 9 points in the final quarter, turn it into a runaway 65-80 victory that clinched first-place in the group. He had 16 points again on 7-for-9 shooting to go with games-highs of 9 rebounds, 3 blocks and a 22 index rating. By the time the Reds finished up the Top 16 with a 78-64 home win over Zalgiris, with Nesterovic again posting game-highs of 20 points and 3 blocks, his impact could not have been clearer. He finished the three most important games of the season so far having averaged 17.3 points on 75% two-point shooting (75%), plus 6.3 rebounds and 3 blocks per game.

In addition to efficiency, Nesterovic showed remarkable consistency, too. He played almost the exact same time, between 23:31 and 23:36, while scoring between 16 and 20 points and blocking 3 shots in all three games. His presence on defense was such that, in the key games against Valencia and FB Ulker, no opposing big men reached double digits in scoring. On offense, thanks to all his tip-ins, Nesterovic produced many of his points on hustle alone. That combination of his efficiency, consistency and hustle will give Olympiacos fans plenty to cheer him about when Nesterovic receives his monthly MVP award at an upcoming home game during the Playoffs.

Olympiacos released Rasho, due to his shoulder injury and that he costs too much money for what he can provide the team.

He might be re-signed if he will accept a very large pay cut (I believe something like 60%), otherwise he will be replaced by Lazaros Papadopoulos.

The 10th anniversary of the NBA's Basketball Without Borders program will be without players.

The current lockout prevents active players from participating in the NBA's annual global outreach program, which this summer is conducting camps in Ljubljana, Slovenia; Johannesburg, South Africa; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

NBA commissioner David Stern said during the NBA Finals that the program would continue regardless of the labor situation and would use retired players, which the program has used in the past.

The camp in Rio de Janeiro runs from July 29-Aug. 1. The camp in Ljubljana from Aug. 8-11 will feature former NBA star Vlade Divac and former NBA player Rasho Nesterovic.

The camp in Johannesburg from Sept. 1-4 will feature former NBA stars Adonal Foyle, Allan Houston, Sam Perkins and Dominique Wilkins. NBA global ambassador Dikembe Mutombo also will be present.
