It sucks. I guess he would have rather retire this summer playing in Argentina with the NT. He should have few regrets, he has had an amazing career and after all he has done, his health was the priority.
I just hope his hearth trouble won't bother him in his daily life.

He just retracted he sayd he meant Fab had a lion heart
Anyone remember when the heart palpitations began? Anyone? It was the play that caused Tim Duncan to laugh at Joey Crawford, and Crawford to eject Duncan. I'm not sure that it was cause and effect, but several articles indicated that it was.
If any of you post on Manu's page, tell him to pass on a message to Fabs. "Tell him to come back here and be an international scout or something. Once a Spur, always a Spur."

too bad, though he had a great career. easily the best Center Argentina's ever had.
however, just this morning I was thinking... the Blazers are so thin at C, any chance we could tempt them with a blair / bonner package and try to land oden or pryzbilla? I know its far fetched, and risky due to their health problems, but would certainly add some length and interior D to our roster. Im sure GMs are wondering what kind of deals might be available given their need, maybe we could get in on something as a 3rd party, just a thought.

As far as the Blazers- why would they want Blair and/or Bonner when neither one of those guys can defend real C/PF's? The Blazers are not really that "thin" at C. They have Camby and Aldridge, plus Dante Cunningham is playing well. They also think that pryzbilla will be back sooner than later.

Bummer, but I don't consider it sad. Not too many guys get to play professional ball for 17 years, but he did. And he's 35 years old, his career wasn't really cut short in my books. If anything it's going to suck not having him around in the league anymore, but I'm sure he feels accomplished as a player.

He got hit in the chest as I recall. That may have been the first episode that he knew of, but he had to have an underlying condition already. He converted to afib and required several cardioversions over the years to bring him back into a normal rhythm if I remember correctly. I'm sure he's already taking anti-arrhythmic meds, so either playing basketball is causing the episodes, or the meds simply aren't enough to keep his rhythm normal (which happens). He could very well have to be on anticoagulation therapy for the rest of his life if they aren't able to prevent it, which means no contact sports.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Portland Trail Blazers center Fabricio Oberto abruptly retired Thursday because of a previously diagnosed cardiac condition that caused heart palpitations.
Oberto, in his sixth year in the NBA, was signed as a free agent by the Blazers one day before the start of the season to help the frontcourt while centers Joel Przybilla and Greg Oden heal from knee surgeries.
Oberto experienced dizziness in Portland's game against Milwaukee on Tuesday.
"I made this decision to put my health and my family in front of basketball,'' Oberto said in a statement. "It was a tough decision to make after playing for so many years, but it was the right one.''
Oberto, a native of Argentina who played on the team that won the gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics, played in each of the first five games for the Blazers, averaging 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 9.0 minutes.
Blazers coach Nate McMillan said he understood the decision.
"It wasn't worth the risk of something serious happening,'' he said.
Oberto played for four seasons with San Antonio, starting at center for the Spurs' NBA championship team in 2007. He spent last season with the Washington Wizards.
He has averaged 3.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 14.5 minutes over 336 career games, including 128 starts.
He was used off the bench to help Marcus Camby, who has served as Portland's starting center in the absence of Oden and Przybilla, who were both injured last season and required surgery.
Przybilla has already started contact practice and is expected to be back by Thanksgiving. There is no timetable for Oden's return.
McMillan said Przybilla's return would not be pushed up in light of Oberto's retirement.
"We just have to be patient, we really do, and not put him at risk,'' McMillan said.
The Blazers will look outside for help at center, he said.
The Blazers had planned this season to back up Camby with second-year forward Jeff Pendergraph. But Pendergraph was injured in the preseason and required season-ending surgery. The Blazers waived him.
Portland also announced Thursday that rookie guard Luck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_Lu ck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_ Williams would have surgery to repair a dislocated right patella. He will likely miss the rest of the season.
The team knew Williams would eventually need surgery, but he wanted to play on it while he could, McMillan said. Williams was sore after practice on Wednesday.
Portland selected Williams with the 22nd overall pick of the draft this June. He averaged 17.9 points, four rebounds and 3.8 assists as a sophomore at Memphis last season.

No one was happy to hear the news that Blazers forward Fabricio Oberto decided to retire Thursday due to a recurring heart condition. Known wherever he's been as a great teammate, Oberto proved it once again on his way out of Portland.
When a player suffers a season- or career-ending medical condition, he's entitled to receive every dollar he's due. But Oberto, 35, didn't go that route. In fact, after discussing his medical issues with Blazers officials, doctors and his agent, Oberto agreed to sign an addendum to his contract converting it from guaranteed to non-guaranteed.
In fact, he insisted on it, said Oberto's agent, Herb Rudoy.
"He just absolutely was adamant when we talked about it," Rudoy said Thursday night. "He didn’t feel it was correct to be there for a week and get paid for the season."
I'm not surprised of that coming from Oberto.

Oberto's retirement surprises Ginobili, Spurs (http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/obertos_retirement_surprises_ginobili_spurs_106805 583.html)
By Mike Monroe
...“His career's been unbelievable,” Ginobili said after the Spurs' morning practice session. “He won everything everywhere he played. The most important thing is you'll never find anyone to say a bad word about him. He's one of those guys, a great teammate, always positive, always worrying about the team.”
...“It was going to happen sooner or later,” he said. “If it wasn't this year, it was going to be next year or the following. The fact he (retired) so surprisingly, it's got us all shocked.”
...“Fabby is a wonderful person and fantastic player,” Popovich said. “He was somebody who really knew how to play, a great competitor, great teammate and a joy to coach. He's somebody who is one of the good people on the Earth. He's really a sweet man.
“I'm happy for him. He's made the decision it's not worth it to push this physical situation. He's going to do great. He's going to become the No. 1 vintner in the world now.”

Favorite memories from Fab: teeing off on the Jazz in the '07 WCF (didn't he go like 7-7 or 11-11 on fg or something ridiculous in one of those games?);
yeah I remember that... I think it was 11-11...
another favorite moment was when he got under someone's skin... intentionally... I think it was the lakers, and maybe bynum got ejected or something...

In an interview with the sports channel Showsport Cordoba, Fabricio Oberto seems opened to the possibility of returning to play basketball.
“I have to finish some studies but the doctor tells me I can have a normal life if I pass. So, we will see,” he said even if he announced his retirement after starting the season with the Portland Trail Blazers. Fabricio Oberto, who is awaiting to open the museum of his life on December 12, said: “I still train. I go to the gym. I think I’ll keep trying to see how I feel.”
“The most important thing is now to be in good health,” he added in an interview reproduced by World D.

I love Fab, but I wouldn't want him to come back if it was bad for his health. At least, it seems like he feels the same way.

Shit, Fabrico Oberto is a really good player. Too bad he's leaving. Best of luck and good health.

I guess he just didn't want to be in the NBA anymore. I don't know if he'd have been better than Blair if were on the Spurs, but at least he had familiarity with the system.

I assume that's an Argentine team. Assuming it's not because he's broke, it's good news that Oberto is back on the court. IIRC, he had some messy family stuff (divorce?) that kept him sidelined for a while ... not to mention his heart condition.

Atenas is indeed an Argentina league team, from the same province he was born in (Cordoba).

Looks like it was one of the teams he played for when he was really young:

his first pro team, he wants to retire in his home team. I hope he manages to actually get some action w/o health problems, he deserves it

Good question... I think overall Diaw but he is much more agile than Fab was. Considering what Fab was.. he was a great passer. A favourite spur of mine tbh.. did he job very well

Diaw has the passing edge because he can do it on the move, having been a wing/guard for the early part of his career.
