Spurs draft pick Ryan Richards confirms he will be having a second shoulder surgery today. Likely now to miss entire season.

Let's hope it will end his shoulder troubles and that he will be back for the next summer league.

with pop teaching him and tim taking him under his wing this kid is going to be really good. that is if they dont send him to the toros....

lol even most average fans understand toros stint = death knell to nba career.

The Spurs aren't looking all that good when it comes to their medical staff.

We all know about the Mahinmi situation and now Richards is having a surgery he was told to have before the Spurs took a look and told him it was unnecessary.

Like Bruno said, hopefully this procedure puts the shoulder concerns to rest.

HoopsFix (http://www.hoopsfix.com/2010/11/richards-to-undergo-a-second-shoulder-operation/):

Ryan Richards’ rehab from the shoulder injury that has kept him out since he was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs this summer was dealt a blow this week with the news he is to undergo another operation, this time on his right shoulder.

Both injuries were picked up on the MRI scan in May, with the medical team recognising his other shoulder would eventually need surgery as well, however, that time has come sooner than expected. Richards has been booked in for the operation this Monday.

His schedule to return has now been pushed back-he is due back on the court March 8th 2011 to be cleared for full contact by April 8th 2011.

So saying he would need surgery means they thought it was unnecessary?

I guess I missed that part of the saga.

I don't understand why we're talking about this guy already. No need to hype him up for at least another 2 years. Holy shit, I'll be able to buy alcohol legally then (so will Ryan Richards.) See? More things to get excited about than Ryan Richards... :toast

Actually, I was just about to retract that comment. I mixed a couple of happenings up in my head.

The Spurs' staff had him go ahead and get the left shoulder taken care of, something he was probably going to go ahead and play through, just to get it sorted out and taken care of. So it was the other way around.

I guess Mahinmi's mis-diagnosis or error was just fresh enough on the mind to have me jump to conclusion.

My bad.

i wonder if this is somethig to do w/his rottor cuff or anything major, so we have a better prognosis. we need this kid more than he needs us tbh

He probably needs the Spurs to pay his medical bills so he can have a basketball career anywhere.

Sounds more like a precaution to prevent the eventual second shoulder surgery. He was already in recovery, so why not get him all fixed up this year?
He will be 20 next year, right?

This kid definitely has my interest. I am curious to see what he can do.

Anyone know when he will be in a Spurs uniform (summer league, d-league)?

He was expecting to be in the D-League this year before the latest surgery.

His sole intention is to be in the NBA and he feels the D-League is the best route -- he was thinking he could have received a call-up this season at some point (the guy doesn't lack for confidence - at all).

Moving forward everything's going to be dependent on his health. Just gonna have to wait and see.

Not sure if this has been posted. It's a couple of days old but I didn't see it.

Richards Now A Legit 7 Footer (http://www.hoopsfix.com/2010/11/richards-now-a-legit-7-footer/)
Hoopsfix

One of the few things Ryan Richards has lacked so far in his basketball career is being able to say he is a legit 7-foot, having always measuring in at 6’11-6’11 1/2. Not anymore. The Spurs measured him up yesterday and he tweeted;

“They just took our height and weight today… 7ft BARE FOOT!… 247lbs”

Not only does he measure in at a legit 7 foot (meaning he will be at least 7’1″ in his playing shoes), but he’s also put on 10-12lbs of muscle. With the mobility and athleticism he already has, his stock will inevitably rise, now he’s just gotta get healthy. 2011 watch out.

Few may be one of those words that doesn't mean what you think it does across the pond. Ya know, like "chip."

And how do they know it's muscle he put on since he just had two surgeries and could just be sitting around eating chips (or chips) all day?

Just because that's what you do all day doesn't mean everyone else does the same thing.

Today I'm devising a Matt Barnes drinking game based on your posts.

Hoopsfix is great when it comes to knowing all there is to know about the Brits, but it does sound a bit odd that anyone would put on muscle mass after surgery.

Maybe he's got Yao legs now?

I mean I would completely allow for the weight gain's being all flab and not think twice about it. Plenty of time to lose it.

Also I have no idea where anyone could get the idea he could be a better Odom at this point. Is there even enough game footage to make that kind of a call?

Well its obvious the kid is in the middle of a growth spurt, doesn't take a genius to realize he might be putting on extra weight with the height.

Oh, and Matt Barnes has twin boys.

Probably a bit premature. But he's a left handers (like Odom) with a smooth stroke (like Odom). And he's bigger than Odom. (unlike Odom, but better).

Oh, and Matt Barnes has a brother that plays in the CFL.

Dude had two surgeries. Tell me, doctor: do you expect his general activity level to increase or decrease following two surgeries.

as probably one of maybe only double figures English Spurs fans living in England, this is sad news. Would be really exciting to see Ryan make it and be in a Spurs uniform.

My hope would be he can step into the team as a 5th big when McDyess is out at the end of the 2011-2012 season, just after he has a successful Olympics in front of a home crowd in London!

The surgery is not anything new. That is why they've kept the kid around this long w/o him going overseas to play.
I would think it was common knowledge by now that the Spurs staff is actually top-notch when it comes to conditioning & rehab.
I saw the kid @ a recent Spurs game & he looked great, albeit his arm was in a sling. He is very tall.

Yeah, that'd seem pretty logical. Not sure if he had put on some muscle prior to the second surgery or if there's been a weight gain from lack of inactivity or just an exaggerated number, but putting on muscle mass in the midst of 2 shoulder surgeries would seem pretty odd.

On a superficial, YouTube level, I guess you could find somewhat of a comparison. Nothing more.

The new news is that he was just measured by the Spurs and is legitimately 7-foot without shoes. This was just the thread I put it in; I didn't feel like searching for more than a sec. :hat

This year draft is said to be weak. A 7'1" Richards will be maybe a better prospect than what Spurs could get with their first round pick next June.

A couple of reasons why I think he might have a chance in making it in the NBA.

* 7"1 Center
* He is atheltic and very fluid
* He sounds like he is intelligent and will have a good work ethic
* He plays with a freakin attitude.:ihit

So does anyone know what type of surgery he had and what is the outcome?
