Just going to rattle off some early playoff thoughts on the western powers thus far. (No telling where the nugs, blazers, thunder will be in the playoffs)
Spurs are going to need to fire off on the 3 to beat the lakers in a 7 game set. Lucky for us the Spurs are doing just that.
Spurs are going to need to defend the pick and roll of Chandler and Kidd. This is a big question mark as it is going to rely on our Nba Rookie Splitter or Jefferson going nuts and scoring at will.
Hornets are hot maybe they will cool off. As of now though I think that first loss was a lapse and wouldnt happen again.

As of right now (Nov. 9th) the Spurs would lose a series against the Lakers/Hornets. They can't defend the 3, post or pick-n-roll. Thankfully they have many months to get this straight.
Dallas is a toss up.

SA vs NO - 60/40 with the spurs to win
SA vs Dal - 50/50
SA vs LAL - 75/25 with LAL to win
Its ok to compare teams like NO and Dal with the spurs cause I feel they are pretty equal in talent, but I would not even bring LAL into the mix yet cause they are definatly a lvl or 2 ahead of the spurs at this point. The spurs are relatively young and health withstanding they can become a much better team. lets hope

Hornets? are contenders all of a sudden? no way. Spurs beat HOrnets/mavs easily in playoffs.
Lakers would beat spurs in 6 or less games.

Spurs are playing well, no doubt Spurs fans should be happy.
But chances against LA? Who has their best team in the past 4 seasons?

It's hard to see anyone else beat the lakers with the way Gasol and Odom are playing right now. Even after their last game, I still think Portland has the best shot if they can get Oden and Prizbilla back healthy.
IMO, the Spurs would need Tiago to develop into a top center very quickly and Anderson needs to become a defensive stopper which is unlikely in just one season.
It's too soon to tell about Hornets/Mavs, Hornets are thin on paper and Mavs have a lot of question marks around Dirk especially come playoff time.

Right now ? You're right. Come May ? Things might be different.
We aren't playing anywhere near a contender's quality of defense but we have some good tools to develop.
I like our chances better than any other teams. That includes the Hornets who will come back to Earth soon and the Thunder.

Spurs are tough. Flakers are just pretend tough. Bynum won't make it. Artest and Barnes is just too much crazy for one team. Spurs are steady. Flakers are volatile. Everything is all cake and gravy now . . . just wait.

Last time I looked the Spurs were 4th in offensive production but in the middle of the pack on defense. They're on the right track, but if they don't tighten up the defense, I don't see them going very far in the playoffs.
Oh, Gee!!

OMG. Way too early!!!! Just keep winning the games they're supposed to, and maybe they'll ended a 2 or 3 seed instead of 7 or 8 playing every series on the raod.

Defense is the key and in the top 3 IMO to June parade. Lakers aren't untouchable or unbeatable.... quit buying that hype.

I agree with JWest596, only someone as egotistical as a LA citizen would buy the hype that The Lakers are going to take the Championship until Kobe and Gasol are pushing daisies. Sure, The Lakers are the big dogs, but that's what Basketball's about, overcoming adversity, overcoming the big dogs. I hope you've been keeping track of that legendary Spur's ambition that has been restored this season, because once the screws are tightened, you're going to start shitting bricks come playoffs time. & we beat the Mavs last year, and our team was much worse. They've made no adjustments, they'd lose 4-2 against us.

Right now the Spurs are the 2nd best team in the West. That would be the good news.
The bad news is you would have to combine teams 2 and 3 to come close to beating the Lakers.
The only way anyone touches the Lakers is if they start to suffer injuries, and Stern suddenly goes into a coma and is unable to get his refs involved.

We're not the second best team in the west. The Lakers are the best team in the west, followed by the hornets.

The Hornets are pretenders, everyone should know this, I don't even consider them the 3rd best. That would be Oklahoma City.
This will become more evident as the season goes on.

Though I don't like watching it, I am not as worried about the "D" as many here. I remember 2 years ago in January we were in the area of 25th or so in opp. FG%, by the end of the season.... 4th. In order to make up that much ground we had to have been playing at a number 1 level the entire time. It seems that each season has a similar effect (thus SPAM), but I just remember that season specifically because it was so pronounced.

Don't forget last the year the Spurs were KILLING it from 3 point land, only to have the other teams adjust, and the Spurs went on to falter prior to the last few weeks of the season.
I do think the shooters this year are better than last, but when the Spurs play the Lakers, Phil Jackson loves to pack the lane and force San Antonio to beat them from outside.
In a 7 game series, I'd take the Lakers in 6 at the most.
I could see SA beating Dallas and NO in a playoff series, but they're still a ways away from the Lakers. The defense has got to get better or even a series against the Mavericks and Hornets could get ugly, let alone the Lakers.

paul west pick and roll will kill us..
dallas is better but until they go with dirk iso i dont care about them..
also lakers are better..but we could beat them only with good refs e home court advantage = no way
we need to improve our roster with a big trade

Honest to God though just looking at our roster we should be a much better team then Dallas this year. Unless Tyson Chandler is actually in his prime and healthy, then I don't see how they've improved adding Brian Cardinal and Steve Novak-ane.

Without an healthy Bynum, Lakers aren't that scary. They are still better than Spurs but not by a lot.

They look pretty scary so far from my perspective, w/out Bynum. Give GM Mitch Kupchak alot of credit, he turned what was one of the worst benches in the league to one of the best. Kupchak = GM of the year so far.
