View Full Version : How will the FO react towards Parker?
The Truth #6
11-17-2010, 06:43 PM
(I know there's the Tony/Eva thread but I'd like to steer this back towards the Spurs. If mods want to delete, that's fine too.)
Given how Peter Holt puts a high priority on character, could the recent development with Parker endanger his career with the Spurs?
Curious to hear how others think this will play out with the FO.

If he did cheat on his wife, he's not the first Spurs player to do so.
So they'll probably just tell him to ignore the press, and continue having a great season.

This is worse than just cheating on his wife. He did it with one of the most well-liked former Spurs' wife. I'm sure some of the other guys think he's a jerk.
I gotta wonder what DRob thinks about it.

I'm not worried about the cheating part.
It's the ex teammate wife part that I don't like. If it was a current teammate then it would have been pretty straight forward as it stands now - assuming that it is in fact true - I see two problems:
- Big media frenzy that will create nuisance/anger in one of the more conservative teams in the NBA.
- How much the other veterans liked Brent. This has nothing to do with basketball. Imagine a similar situation in your workplace and you know it would create an unpleasant situation - and that's without the media's attention that this guys are and will be under.
The best solution will be if the media losses interest real quick, which in today's world wouldn't be that surprising. Could we somehow get Artest off of his meds? That would pretty much take care of the media attention...

Unlike golf, you can actually play better frustrated in basketball. If Tony drops 40 tonight then I think he should get remarried and then divorce again around June.
Also unlike golf, basketball is a team sport. Your individual effort might improve with anger or frustration, but Parker's (alleged) actions reveal him to be an untrustworthy, selfish jerk. That *can* hurt team chemistry, promote distrust, etc ... or it could make them all fall in line and gut out emotional victories to show support for one of their leaders.
I don't know. Brent Barry seems to be a well-liked guy. And I couldn't blame anyone on the current roster wondering if Parker is going after his wife.

You're right - the Spurs players are hardly ever in the news; and I think this is what will upset the FO. This isn't LA - and the Spurs like being under the radar, both personally and professionally. The other players teased Tony about being "Mr. Hollywood" - but I don't think they're going to like all this extra attention.

Well, quite frankly this is exactly my concern with the subject. It's a small concern considering my entire life, however the Spurs are my favorite team by far in any sport and therefore it's something I don't wish upon in the locker room, especially this season. If we were in Sixers mode, that is, going back and forth every year from making the playoffs as an 8th seed and not making them, I would care far, far less.
And yeah I feel kinda bad for Barry, he seems like a cool and appreciated guy among his ex-teammates, Tony the exception.

Tony Parker briefly speaks out on his divorce (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2010/11/17/tony-parker-briefly-speaks-out-on-his-divorce/)
by Tim Griffin
Tony Parker answered three questions during a brief 50-second meeting with members of the media before Wednesday’s game. Here’s what he had to say:
His general statement on his divorce: “It’s a difficult time for me and Eva. We have a joint statement and everything else is our private life.”
On allegations that he was involved with the wife of a former teammate: “That’s my private life.”
On whether it will affect his play on the court and his teammates: “I’m having great support from my teammates and my coaches. I’m focused 100 percent on the Spurs and trying to win basketball games.”

Pop on the Tony/Eva divorce (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2010/11/17/pop-on-the-tonyeva-divorce/)
by Tim Griffin
Here’s what Spurs coach Gregg Popovich had to say Wednesday before the game on Tony Parker’s divorce with his wife, Eva Longoria Parker.
“This is a difficult situation for everyone, obviously, but Eva and Tony are two people that we love and care about,” Popovich said. “We wish them both the best as they move through this. That’s really all I have to say about it.”
Popovich did not answer whether he discussed the situation with his team.

Don't think this would be that big a deal in the locker room. These are highly paid athletes who have traveled all over the world--not a naive one on the team. As far as spillover due to Brent's likeability? Again, don't think it'd be all that big a deal since none of them has to face Brent on day-to-day basis. Besides, she slept with him as much as he slept with her. Who knows what the other players really think about her? I mean, I have plenty of married friends with wives I can't stand--and it wouldn't bother me if anyone hit those.

He's probably going to try to resolve the conflict in a lighthearted and humorous way by showing up at Eva's new place with a fresh baguette for her. Eva will open the door and be delighted after discovering that there's some extra-curricular meat included inside the baguette, which isn't very typical. Then she will take a bite of the baguette, realize what she's doing, and proceed by biting Tony's shaft off.

Because of DRob and The Li'l General, people have come to associate the conservative, low key approach of this organization as "churchy".
Just because they don't generate media fodder on a regular basis doesn't mean that everyone's at church twice on Sunday.
I can guarantee you that no on in the FO is looking to get rid of him over this, and I would HIGHLY doubt that any of his teammates are walking into Pop's office and refusing to play with Tony.
