Some post-game quotes.

Spurs win 10th straight with rout of Cavaliers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/recap?gid=2010112024)
By Paul J. Weber

Stockpile wins early: That’s what the San Antonio Spurs emphasized in training camp after paying the price for a lumbering start last year.

But they probably didn’t imagine this.

Tony Parker scored 19 points and the Spurs won their 10th in a row, improving their NBA-best record to 11-1 with a 116-92 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday night, keeping the best San Antonio start in franchise history rolling.

“Great run for us,” Spurs forward Tim Duncan said. “It’s a good start for us. There’s going to be some ups and downs this season, but this team is built on what we did last year.”

Reaching the Western Conference semifinals, where they were swept by Phoenix, happened no thanks to an uneven start in November. The Spurs were 6-6 at this stage last season, ultimately taking so long to hit their stride that the No. 7 seed in the West was the best they could muster.

Rookie Tiago Splitter, in the 7-footer’s biggest game since the Spurs made him their marquee addition this summer, scored 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Richard Jefferson scored 14 points and Manu Ginobili had 13.

“We need the wins early this year compared to last year down the stretch,” Ginobili said. “In March and April, we put a lot of pressure on us.”

Mo Williams scored 21 points and Daniel Gibson had 17 for the Cavaliers, who played a night after losing on the road to New Orleans—the only team to beat San Antonio so far.

The Hornets are 10-1, which made for a grueling back-to-back for the Cavaliers, who have lost four of five.

“We wanted to use these two games as a measuring stick,” said forward Antawn Jamison, who scored 12 points. “We showed signs, but it’s just not consistent 48 minutes to be able to compete against these two teams.”

The Cavaliers trailed 64-57 at halftime. Back in the locker room before the third quarter, coach Byron Scott let his players decide how to defend San Antonio’s pick-and-roll.

Scott said it was the first time he’s left that decision to his players.

“It might be the last, too,” Scott said.

Aside from adding Splitter—a first-round Spurs pick in 2007 who stayed in Europe until now—the roster for the Spurs didn’t change much since a year ago.

But they certainly don’t look the same.

The second-highest scoring team in the NBA behind the Los Angeles Lakers, the Spurs pulled away with a barrage of 3-pointers and a 14-6 burst in the third quarter after Cleveland trailed by seven at halftime. The 24-point win was the most lopsided Spurs victory this season.

Williams was 9 of 15 and had six assists, but was the only starter in double figures for the Cavaliers.

The Spurs made 12 of 25 from behind the 3-point line and had a season-high 32 assists, including nine from Parker. Matt Bonner, who hit four 3s, had 12 points.

The way the Spurs are scoring, Jefferson said it reminds him of the Suns.

The way they passed the ball against the Cavaliers, meanwhile, reminded him off his former team.

“That’s a lot. That’s up there with New Jersey, and we had Jason Kidd,” Jefferson said. “With him, when our best player is probably one of the top two or three passers in the history of the game, it become contagious.”

Cleveland led by one going into the second quarter, but couldn’t keep up while the Spurs shot 63 percent heading into halftime. Ginobili scored all of his 13 points in the second quarter.

Notes: The last time the Spurs won 11 in a row was late in the 2008 season. Their longest streak a year ago was five games. … Cavaliers center Ryan Hollins was ejected in the fourth quarter when he brought down Splitter with his forearm. Said Scott after the game: “In 1980s that’s a regular foul. Get up and play. I know what the league is trying to do and I understand that.” Splitter didn’t seem to mind, either, saying, “I don’t care.”

Notes on a scorecard: Why the Spurs offense keeps humming along (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2010/11/21/notes-on-a-scorecard-why-the-spurs-offense-keeps-humming-along/)
by Tim Griffin

...One factor that again was impressive was San Antonio’s offensive balance. Six different players scored in double figures, matching a season-high. Tony Parker had 19 to lead them, but easily could have piled up more with additional playing time. Three other players had eight points apiece. Every San Antonio player had at least one assist except for Danny Green. And all of the players scored except for Chris Quinn. It was a night to showcase the firepower in the San Antonio lineup as the Spurs piled up their most points in a game this season.

...Gregg Popovich did a nice job of managing his roster Saturday night. No Spur played more than 28 minutes with Parker and George Hill both reaching that level. None of the other starters played more than 27 minutes. And Tim Duncan played only 17:12 in his shortest stint of the season after his big night Friday in Utah. That rest, as well as skipping practice on Sunday, should leave them in good shape for their game Monday night against Orlando.

San Antonio Spurs 116, Cleveland Cavaliers 92: Where the Spurs frontline is deeper than yours (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/)
by Jesse Blanchard
48 Minutes of Hell

AT&T CENTER–A year ago, the fourth quarter of a blowout win presented ample opportunity for a post on the long term potential of Ian Mahinmi or DeJuan Blair. Tonight, as the San Antonio Spurs inched ever closer to garbage time, a sudden realization hit: Matt Bonner and Tiago Splitter are currently the fourth and fifth bigs in the Spurs’ frontline rotation.

Granted, the Cleveland Cavaliers are a recently fallen team, but their end-of-the-bench counterparts in Ryan Hollins, Jawad Williams, and Leon Powe are pretty standard fare for most NBA teams. And while there is something to be said about quality and quantity–the Los Angeles Lakers offering a better but top heavy frontline–how many teams can claim their last two options on the frontline are both NBA quality rotation players?

Earlier in the week we established the possibility that the San Antonio Spurs might have the top backcourt in the league with a three-guard rotation of Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and George Hill, with Parker again doing much of the heavy lifting tonight (19 points, 9 assist on 7 -11 shooting). On the receiving end of many of Parker’s passes, rookie center Tiago Splitter may have made a case for the Spurs also employing the NBA’s deepest frontline.

SAN ANTONIO -- The Cavaliers headed into the weekend knowing full well the enormity of the task they were facing: The best two teams in the league (at least by win-loss record) in the New Orleans Hornets and the San Antonio Spurs, on their home floors, on back-to-back nights.

For the most part, the Cavs gave a good accounting of themselves. But for the second night in a row, the better team won as the Spurs pulled away to an 116-92 victory on Saturday night at the AT&T Center.

The Cavs don't expect anyone to feel sorry for them after completing the toughest trip in the league right now.

"Everybody has one of those stretches,'' said Antawn Jamison, who finished with 12 points as the Cavs fell to 5-7, 3-3 on the road. "We knew that this was going to take place before the season started. We didn't know these two teams would be playing the best basketball in the NBA. We've got two playoff-caliber teams on two nights where they're outplaying everybody in the NBA.

"We can't make excuses. We dealt with it. We've got to learn from these mistakes we made.''

While the Cavs were doomed by a horrible second quarter at New Orleans, on Saturday night it was an amalgamation of mistakes, according to coach Byron Scott.

"I really don't feel we gave ourselves a fair chance in either game because of the mistakes that we made,'' he said. "You're playing against the two best teams in the league, and the one thing you can't do is make a ton of mistakes -- physically as well as mentally. I thought we did that in both games, especially tonight.''

The Cavs committed 17 turnovers on offense and missed lots of assignments on defense, in spite of the fact that Scott asked them -- for the first time ever -- how they wanted to defend the pick-and-roll in the second half.

"Might be the last time, too,'' he said, as the Cavs failed to do what they requested.

As a result, Tony Parker had 19 points and nine assists and Tiago Splitter added 18 as the Spurs improved to 11-1 overall, 6-1 at home. With the Cavs failing to switch on Matt Bonner, he hit four wide-open 3-pointers for 12 points.

"Tonight our mistakes hurt us big time and they took advantage of it,'' said Mo Williams, who led the Cavs with 21 points and six assists. "Playing against teams like this _ playing the best basketball in the NBA -- we have to be clicking on all cylinders. We can't have any mistakes. We've got to look like a seasoned veteran team. We showed our youth at times. We made mistakes. That's what we can learn from and try to go forward.''

Jamario Moon scored all of his eight points in the second quarter and the Cavs were within 64-57 at halftime. But the Spurs put together a 19-10 run for an 83-67 lead.
As if to show they were not backing down, for the second night in a row the Cavs were called for a flagrant 2 foul. This time it was on Ryan Hollins, who went to block a shot by Splitter and whacked him in the head instead with 8:52 left in the fourth quarter and the Spurs ahead, 91-81.

Hollins, who committed a flagrant 1 at New Orleans, was ejected, and Splitter made both free throws. Then Bonner hit a 3-pointer on the resultant possession and all of a sudden San Antonio's lead was back to 96-81.

Scott wouldn't say he was pleased or displeased with the flagrant fouls, but when asked if it showed the Cavs were going down fighting, he smiled and said, "I guess if I'm going to look at it one way or the other, that's the way I'm going to hope to look at it when I watch the tape.''
