Evidence:

- I have never seen one non-Arian-looking person in a VW commercial and they always talk about how awesome GERMAN engineering is and such
- Everyone who drives a bug drives like a maniac on the autobahn
- Engines in the back is just ass backwards

Discuss.

Other than the fact that the Nazis were not socialist. Not to mention that I did own a Jetta once. And other than the Beetle, none of the other VW's have engines in the back. The Jetta was a nice care. Had some nice pickup for such a small engine.

Maybe I feel that way because my great grandma was a pure German and it shows with my kids.

They were in no shape or form socialist. NAZIs were right wing while Socialist are left wing. Communist are extreme socialists.

Well then, that solves that dilemma. No front engines.

Shit I love my Jetta. Nathan Explosion is correct. It has amazing pick-up. I want to cry every time i drive someone else's compact car because I can't go nearly as fast as I do in the Jetta.

And fascist..no. Socialist...perhaps. Depends on the day.

That little 1.8 putting out 180 horses was nice for a small car. I miss the leather seats and sunroof though, especially on cool nights like tonight.

This thread, in which the nuances of front, mid and rear engine are lost on most of you.

Also, Christ, the 'engine in the back' thing was in reference to the old beetles. Come on, y'all!

edit: And come on, it was the "National Socialist German Workers' Party". You gotta give them some socialism cred.:lol

You go far enough to either side and you pretty much end up coming back round the other side. That's what he meant.

Fascism and Marxism (true communism) are different. In actual practice, Stalin and Hitler were pretty much the same person.

The Jetta TDI will remain the mileage and range champion, as will any of the 4-cyl diesels if they every get offered in USA, vs all the hybrids and electrics for years to come. And no multi-$K batteries to replace after a couple of years.

Checking the Jetta TDI forums finds lots of people claiming 50 mpg highway.

I'd love to get away from carbon fuel, but there's not enough lithium on the planet.

There isn't a VW in production that has an engine in the back. The last one was the old Beetle.

Actually I can't think of any current car that has a back mounted engine since technically the Lamborghinis, Ferraris and similar have central mounted engines.

I know I'm nitpicking...

P.S. Do you have a flower in the little vase on the dashboard?

I can't do leather. One of my co-workers has an '08 with leather and the sunroof and I give her crap al lthe time for the leather. It gets so hot...even now. The sunroof though, I adore. I never close the little cloth thing on it. I feel closed in if it's closed.

Yes my Toyota MR2 Spyder has the mid enigine but I always call it a rear engine; probably because it is more descriptive.

Nope. I've had lots of things in there over the years, and it currently holds the bluetooth thingy that I never use, but I've never put a flower in the bud vase.

Considering how many things I have decorating the huge dash board (formerly an army of dancing hula girls, currently a collection of lady bugs and devil duckies), a flower would just be overkill.

I'm consistently surprised by how many New Beetles I see that do have a flower in there, though. I think they actually came with a matching flower already in the vase during the first few years of production, but I bought mine used.

:lol OK you've redeemed yourself!

I always loved the irony of the original beetle (and it's spin off van) that started as a symbol of the industrial might of the Nazis and ended up as an icon of the flower power movement.

We're not arguing history but political ideologies in theory. It's political science.

And any ideology in theory differs from practice. Some by distortion of a person or party, and some out of necessity.

The US is a perfect example of this. Due to the large population, a democracy in theory cannot exist. A direct democracy is impractical, so the US enacted a representative democracy.

Another example is a republic. A republic is a government controlled by the people. The US is a republic by way of the people being represented by Congressmen, and the US Constitution. China is called a republic but is not governed by the people, but a dictator. However, since said dictator doesn't proclaim himself king, he can technically say that he rules over a republic.

But make no mistake, China is a monarch in a different sense of the word. Same for the USSR.

I could go on.

Communism is false commumism?

Communism as practiced in China, the former USSR, North Korea and Cuba is not the communism that Marx preached.

The theory of communism is best labeled Marxism to clarify that it's the theory we're discussing and not the actual government in practice made famous by Lenin and Stalin.

Marx preached the power of the people. Kind of like a republic but not with capitalism but rather socialism (economical ideology mixed with political ideology). Marx claimed that the working class shall rule and not the privileged elite.

However, Cuba, China, North Korea (and the USSR) were ruled by a privileged elite in the form of a dictator. Hardly Marxism. So yes, in practice, communism as the world knows it is in fact fake communism when compared to Marxism.

Jesus, how did a VW thread turn into a discussion involving political science, economics and philosophy?

My brain is tired.

One last thing on the fascist/socialist argument.

After much refreshing of the mind (what's left of it at this stage of the day), I've concluded for now that while the NAZIs and the USSR promote the one party aspect of socialism, it's really only in name and not spirit. The governments liked the economic aspect of a government controlled economy but not the political and cultural aspects.

Socialism promotes the welfare of the people, and the dictators of the so called "socialist" "republics" cared about anything but the welfare of the working classes. Hardly socialism in the spirit of the theory.

The leather can be hot and cold, but when it comes to durability and comfort, there's nothing like it. Plus, the one thing that people NEVER mention about leather seats is this.

My Jetta had leather seats and seat warmers. In the winter when it's dry and 30F outside the seats could be cold but the seat warmers do a nice job. The cloth and suede seats in my Sentra are nice looking and don't get too hot or cold. However, when the humidity drops, there is one thing that happens every time I punch in my gate code when coming home.

I SHOCK THE SHIT OUT OF MYSELF EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME I TOUCH THE METALLIC KEYPAD!!!!!!!! That NEVER happened in my Jetta but always happened when sitting in the cloth seats of my Galant and then Sentra. Fucking static electricity generated by the friction caused by the cloth gets me every time. It's gotten so bad I can't even just reach out and punch in my gate code. My finger ALWAYS stops a few inches from the keypad and I have to mentally prepare myself for the shock. I hesitate every single time. It could be fucking pouring rain and 100% humidity and I still hesitate. I'm conditioned to expect the shock. FUCK YOU PAVLOV!!!!

The only thing that would allow me suck it up and do it was to touch my wife's arm with my other hand in hopes of passing the current to her so I could let her know what it feels like since she thought it was funny that I shock myself every single time.

Frankly the latest 911 are very nice to ride, it only took them 50 years to get the balance of the car right. But now it does work.

I never owned a Porsche but a good friend of mine who actually collects these sort of things has several and let me tell you on a large, wet and VERY empty parking lot they're a lot of fun to drive. In regular traffic - not so much. :D

Definitely a car for the more experienced driver.

Oh, I wouldn't want to own a Porsche for regular day to day driving. Hell no. What's the point of having this car that can flat out fly down the highway if you're stuck in bumper to bumper?

Personally, the one car I'd get if I came across a load of money is an Audi RS 4. I hear the ride is rough, but the car can flat out fly without having to pay 6 figures. It'd be my special occasion drive or one where I know I'm going to see lots of open road and little to no cops.

See, bringing the thread back to VW.
