View Full Version : Not even mad anymore, New Orleans Hornets fanbase I am calling you out!!!!!!

Our fan support is a joke and as much as I love the Hornets, they deserve better than the pathetic ass support the people in this city and state provides them. (For those Hornets fans who actually do go to the games, major props to you!) However New Orleans always likes to brag about how "wonderful" of a sports town they are yet they can't even come anywhere near selling out the 2nd smallest arena in the NBA on a nightly basis. (17,100ish is considered a sellout whenever the arena can hold over 18,500). Obviously when teams are doing poorly you can expect attendance to be down, but even whenever the Hornets started the season 8-0 the attendance was awful. We have only sold out 1 game this season and that was the Heat game which attracted thousands of new N.O. Heat fans.

The Spurs game Sunday was the biggest embarrassment of the season so far. It was a Sunday afternoon, the Saints weren't playing, LSU wasn't playing, and the Spurs were in town fighting the Hornets for 1st place in the division ... and they could only get 12,400 fans to show up. The truth is that New Orleans is a Saints town and Saints town only. The cheapskate, front running fans around here only support the Hornets if ... 1. Tickets are free ... or 2. They are on a big winning streak and making national headlines. The fan support was getting better and better every season, but now has fallen down worse than I have ever seen it. The funniest thing is that most people around here ignore these facts and make pathetic excuses for why the attendance is horrible. For each and every lame excuse they use, I can easily shoot them down and expose their excuses as pure nonsense. To give a few examples I will show you some Hornets fans excuses along with my response ...

Blaming it on ticket prices ...

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/4359/89408914.jpg

My response: wow really? the Hornets offer some of the cheapest tickets available in the NBA next to maybe only the New Jersey Nets! They are always running specials and you can purchase "nose bleed" tickets for as little as $7-10 each. what more do these idiots want? someone to pay them to go?

Blaming it by comparing to a shitty team's attendance and a concert in town

http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/6131/61184075.jpg

My response: first of all the poster lied. Philly had 11k show up for that game. however with that said did he really just try and compare the attendance of shitty 4-13 76ers team to the Hornets who were balling their ass off at the time? ah ok so I guess since Philly had a bad attendance night, then that justifies the Hornets for only having 12,000 show up to watch them play the Spurs??? oh and the VooDoo fest concert was in town too! lol idiots

All time low excuse, blaming it on HIGH SCHOOL football!

http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/6475/87593110.jpg
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/8305/59026502.jpg

My response: sons this one by far takes the cake for the most pathetic, yet laughable excuse. I hope this person isn't being dead serious, but unfortunately I believe he is so according to him high school football is the reason why the attendance is bad. My god ...

14,000 is good enough for this person

My response: Thank you

sons this is the kind of crap that we have to deal with. I have been banned from many Hornets message boards for speaking out against this type of nonsense and trying to encourage people to support the team. Instead everyone just wants to jump on and off the bandwagon whenever it is convenient for them. The truth is that people in this state are just downright cheap, front running bastards. Yea the support for LSU and the Saints has always been solid, but just because the Saints are playing is NOT a legit excuse for Hornets attendance to be piss poor like many of them try to convince as the reason. As if no other NBA team in the country has to deal with other professional sports going on in their city? sorry sons I know this was long, but needed to expose these cheapskates.

son if the Hornets had a record of like 3-14 right now then that figure would be expected, but they have been a fun and exciting team to watch (other than the last week and a half of course). Like I said above, sports "fans" in this state are cheapskate front runners. The Hornets have only had one decent turnout for home games this season and that was Miami ... well never mind because apparently 14,000 is a good enough turnout for some of the people I showed you above lol. Plain and simple there is no reason we can't be putting 16,000-18,000 in the seats every night. The metro area of New Orleans is large enough to support the team and the majority of tickets are more than affordable.

It's pretty sad nonetheless BR.

The Hornets are actually playing well enough to garner a better attendance, the fact that they don't get attention from their locals is depressing...even for me, a fan of another team.

and sons just hours after I made this thread look what pops up on NOLA.com ...

Apparently, the attendance benchmark is back on the table for the New Orleans Hornets

The future of New Orleans' NBA franchise could again be uncertain.

If the Hornets do not average crowds of at least 14,213 for the next 13 games at the New Orleans Arena, the franchise can opt out of its current lease agreement with the state, according to Doug Thornton, vice president of SMG, the company that manages the Arena and the Superdome.

"From a team perspective, we believe we have a compelling product that deserves to be playing in a full building, '' Hornets President Hugh Weber said Sunday after a crucial game against the San Antonio Spurs, which drew 12,449. "As a staff, we're working so that becomes more of the common as opposed to the exception.

As much as I want them here, the Hornets should have just stayed in OKC. The city doesn't care about supporting them, and "struggling" to get 15,000 a game should NEVER be an issue when you have a player like Chris Paul on the team. Imagine how bad the crowds would be if he eventually leaves...that is if the team doesn't relocate by then. =/

sons yet even more ignorance from our fan base ...

http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/4905/42621555.jpg

the excuses and ignorance of some people truly amaze me. they are calling the Hornets organization weak and cowardly for speaking the absolute truth about the situation. a few things these two clowns mentioned need to be corrected ...

1. "I see bad attendance all over the map" - No you don't. You only see it in 6 or 7 different NBA cities out of 30 (New Orleans, Atlanta, Memphis, Sacramento, Indiana, Philly, and New Jersey). Oh and surprise surprise all of those cities have teams that absolutely suck this season other than the Hornets and all of them have been mentioned in articles regarding contraction or relocation. we're not alone, but to write it off as a league wide problem whenever it is only 6 or 7 teams is just ignorant. Where was the fan support whenever the Hornets were 8-0?

2. "I feel its unfair to us (and only us) are held under the attendance microscope." - well that is simply because the fans here won't even support a winning team. the other cities who are having attendance issues have a bullshit team on the floor.

3. "I agree the Hornets can go ... they are so stupid. Thinking that threatening the city will help attendance, when its already known that once football season ends attendance will pick up" - LOL all you can do is laugh at this. people in this area act as if the Hornets are the ONLY TEAM in the NBA who has to share the market with another professional sports franchise. Just because the Saints are playing at the same time is NOT an excuse. wake up.

4. "I look around other NBA arenas IE the Memphis Grizzlies there is no more than 3,000 people in the stands" - wow ... talk about ignorance at its finest. I guarantee you there has never been a Memphis game were only 3,000 people showed up. As a matter of fact, the Grizzlies are currently only 300 people behind the Hornets right now ... so according to this jackass I guess the Hornets are averaging 3,300 people a game then? please educate yourself with facts before spewing stupidity.

5. "I'm not attending another game this year" - aww u mad? we sure will miss your attendance at those Heat and Laker games!

Pelicans78
12-01-2010, 10:38 PM
The big problem is the team spiked ticket prices for certain games like the Heat, Lakers, and the Spurs game. The Spurs game was alot more expensive than usual. That ticket plan has backfired. No reason to spike tickets for certain regular season games. Oh well.

Another problem is this team has the stench of Charlotte all over it. Same name, same awful colors. Team should have changed its identity once it moved to NOLA. Hornets was perfect for Charlotte, but it doesn't work well in NOLA. The colors and unis aren't that great either. Plus, there is ownership issues which has clouded the future of this team. Alot of issues for this franchise to deal with.

The TV deal sucks as well. Not everyone in the region can watch the Hornets. Most of Louisiana can, but folks in Mississippi and Alabama can't. Those same folks never miss a Saints game. It won't change till a new TV deal is reached.

People in this city and state act as if no other NBA team in the country has to deal with other professional sports going on at the same time ... its simply NOT an excuse for poor attendance.

oh and for the select few morons who are blaming Chris Paul for poor attendance ... wow, what can I even say about that? Of course everyone is frustrated with his performance in the second half this season, but Paul pretty much single handedly got this state excited about basketball again. Its not his fault that the fan base is CHEAP and FRONT RUNNERS ... the dude just donated $500,000 of his own personal money to New Orleans schools ... yea lets blame him for attendance because he spoke out against the direction the team is heading.

It won't change till a new TV deal is reached.

son the ticket spike is not a issue either. most NBA teams take this route. anyone with a brain can see that it evens out in the long run. lets say for your average lower bowl ticket you pay $60 to see the Clippers, then $90 to see the Lakers ... that's just how it is. the bottom line is that there is simply NO excuse for attendance to be as pathetic as it is right now with a winning NBA team in town. the Hornets offer the cheapest ticket deals in the NBA to begin with!

Bottom line. New Orleans is too small of a market to have 2 sports teams. The market is already over-saturated as it is. It is the 53rd largest market in the country. They should have never went to New Orleans in the first place.

VoodooFest is a pretty big deal no??? And didnt Drake headline? I could see a lot of folks passing up a meaningless regular season game to catch a once a year concert.

NO fans still suck, but its not the worst excuse Ive heard

ok they get a pass for that ONE game ... but what is their excuse for the other 9 games? ... oh wait, its still football season!!!

The attendance was like this in 2007-2008 till the All-Star break. Attendance was awful than started selling out in February. Alot of the fans came from Baton Rogue, or at least it seemed that way. This town or region hasn't embraced the Hornets for whatever reason as they have for the Saints. Not sure why, but the team hasn't fully embraced the region itself. Does a poor job marketing itself to the surrounding area. Plus, the team didn't establish its own identity like OKC did with the Thunder.

Ownership will be a big issue.

The fact is the city isn't as populated as it was before the Hurricane. Baton Rogue absorbed most of the people. Its easy for fans to travel for weekend games, but for weeknights, it will be different. It's in a nice location, but people don't care about the NBA right now to be honest except for cities that have nothing else to do. The NBA isn't that great of a product. Not as bad as baseball, but nearly as exciting as the NFL. People don't lack black athletes who make alot of money.

sons unfortunately I think its safe to say this will be their last season in New Orleans. I just received an email from my season ticket rep stating that he is suddenly leaving the Hornets as of today. This guy has been my ticket rep for many years now. Kinda odd he is suddenly leaving now ...

My guess is that the Hornets are telling the reps and other employees that they will probably be moving next season to give them a fair enough chance to either stay on and move with them or find another job. the writing is on the wall sons ... depressing :(

Looks like they will have their lease up at the end of the season. If Chouest doesn't take over the team by them, then someone else may step up and move them to a place like Kansas City.

If People Don't Start Attending Hornets Games They're Going To Leave New Orleans

If the Hornets don't average crowds of at least 14,213 during their next 13 home games, the franchise can opt out of its lease agreement with Louisiana, according to The Times-Picayune.

It's part of a complex agreement the franchise reached with the state when it returned from a two-season hiatus in Oklahoma City following Hurricane Katrina.

In short, contingent upon their return, the Hornets must average at least 14,735 fans over season-and-a-half periods. The current period ends on January 31.

The Hornets appeared to be safe when they averaged 15,072 fans per game last season. But despite a franchise best 13-5 start, just 14,214 fans show up to the average game. If that number decreases at all, the franchise could take steps to abandon New Orleans.

Another aspect of the bizarre agreement stipulates that if the Hornets don't average at least 14,750 fans per game, the heavily indebted state of Louisiana owes the franchise $6.8 million.

The Hornets rank 25th among 30 NBA teams in and that could be reason enough for the team to move – especially considering its on-court success.

From The Times-Picayune:

"From a team perspective, we believe we have a compelling product that deserves to be playing in a full building, '' Hornets President Hugh Weber said Sunday after a crucial game against the San Antonio Spurs, which drew 12,449

The NBA has already abandoned New Orleans once before, and apparently, Seattle is pushing to get an NBA team back. Could Chris Paul help them forget about Kevin Durant?

Paul needs to start being a superstar to save this team. He needs to start washing fans cars or something. Get them to the arena!

Personally I think Paul should go door to door in the 9th ward, hand out courtside seats, and shuttle the rats to the game in a stylish limo. :toast

IT'S THE LEAST HE CAN DO!!

The organization is to blame as well. They haven't done a good job in the 10 years in NOLA. They've alienated the area, spit in their faces when they called themselves Oklahoma City in the 2 years there, didn't market well in the surrounding areas, and the on-court product has been ok at best. The game 7 choke job at home had a big effect on the psyche of the team as well as losing 121-63 at home the following season. The city finally embraced the team, but were disappointed. The fans really don't have a reason to believe that this team will amount to anything until proven otherwise.
