The World'S Finest already mentioned it in the US MNT topic, but I thought it would be a good idea to have a separate thread.

Here is the link TWF posted : http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/bidders/live/index.html

What cities in Texas would hold matches in 2022 if it was held in the USA? Im assuming Houston with Reliant Stadium and Dallas with Cowboys Stadium?

SAtown
12-01-2010, 07:21 PM
Definitely Jerry World, maybe Reliant. I went to a couple of matches in 94 at the Cotton Bowl, including the quarter finals between Holland and Brazil.

I'd go as far as to say that Dallas could potentially hold the final.

Dallas and Houston are part of the cities in the bid.

I think the cities will be
Houston
Dallas
NYC-NJ
Miami
LA
Phoenix
Philly
DC

Only issue i see is that the sick stadiums in those cities will be old by 2012

lefty

I hope it will be the U.S

Because I live in Canada, so I wont have to travel overseas for a WC

I lived in France during the 98 WC; no need to travel, it was great

2014 WC in Brazil, 2018 or 2022 in USA hopefully

lol australia 50m to bid for the 2022 games, when they couldnt even get a deal done with the local sports authority to give them access to the bigger stadiums and stopping some of the games other sports game just for 1month....if this bid fails, there be alot of immigrants pissed cause its mainly there money and they the ones building the code up down here....the red necks only watch the game when the national side is playing...

2022 Contenders
Qatar: 4/6 Favorite
It's been said that Qatar has played a beautiful political game (though NewsFeed once again stresses that any allegations of 'vote-trading' with Spain/Portugal have been denied). The Unique Selling Point is, of course, that the World Cup has never been held in an Arab country and Qatar's intention to build stadia that can be dismantled and used in countries with poor infrastructure is a vote winner if ever we saw one. But the fact that these same facilities haven't been built in addition to the searing daytime heat (the FIFA report said it poses "a potential health risk for players, officials, the FIFA family and spectators") may count against the bid as well as the fact that this tiny country is only the size of Connecticut

U.S: 5/2
Despite holding the World Cup relatively recently -- 1994 -- the U.S. continues to show tangible evidence at home that the sport is moving in the right direction. Not only is the MLS a legitimate league, with some terrific foreign imports and stadia ready to roll, but American fans bought up more tickets to the 2010 World Cup than anyone else, save for the South African hosts. But it would be quite the coup to be given a second World Cup in such a short space of time, despite the impressive efforts of former President Bill Clinton to persuade FIFA otherwise.

Australia: 5/2
Australia remains the only continent to have never hosted a World Cup. Its people are undoubted sporting fanatics, the past decade saw an Olympics and Rugby World Cup on its shores and 75% of the stadiums have been built. Going against the Aussies is the brutal time difference in regard to the always lucrative European audience and any awarding of the bid could mean that, from a geographical perspective, China would lose out in 2026 and FIFA is known to want to hold the tournament there sooner rather than later.

Japan: 33/1 and South Korea: 40/1
Though separate bids this time around -- they jointly hosted the 2002 World Cup -- the Asian nations can be considered extreme long shots due to holding such a recent tournament. Full kudos to the South Koreans, however, for promising to include a North Korean host city. Good luck with that.

The candidates for the 2018 FIFA World Cup took to the stage on Thursday morning. Belgium (http://www.fifa.com/associations/association=bel/index.html) and the Netherlands (http://www.fifa.com/associations/association=ned/index.html) started the ball rolling at 9.00, followed by Spain (http://www.fifa.com/associations/association=esp/index.html) and Portugal (http://www.fifa.com/associations/association=por/index.html), England (http://www.fifa.com/associations/association=eng/index.html), and finally Russia (http://www.fifa.com/associations/association=rus/index.html) at 12 noon. From Wikipedia ...what a fun place for a WC:
When contrasted with other Arab states such as Saudi Arabia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudi_Arabia), for instance, Qatar has comparatively liberal laws, but is still not as liberal as some other Arab states of the Persian Gulf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_states_of_the_Persian_Gulf) like UAE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UAE) or Bahrain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahrain). Qatar is a civil law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_law_%28legal_system%29)Shari'a (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shari%27a) or Islamic law is applied to aspects of family law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_law), inheritance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inheritance) and certain criminal acts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criminal_law). Women can legally drive in Qatar and there is a strong emphasis in equality and human rights brought by Qatar's National Human Rights Committee (http://www.nhrc-qa.org/en/news.php?item.473). Qatar also has the largest fines in the world in terms of traffic violation as per the recent change in 2010.

The country has undergone a period of liberalization and modernisation during the reign of the current Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamad_bin_Khalifa_Al-Thani), who came to power in 1995. The laws of Qatar tolerate alcohol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholic_beverage) to a certain extent. However, the few bars and nightclubs in Qatar operate only in expensive hotels and clubs, much Distribution Company, the only importer and retailer for alcohol in Qatar. Under Qatar's Sharia, it is illegal to show alcohol or be drunk in public.

During the month of Ramadan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramadan), eating, drinking, and smoking in public is strictly banned from dawn to sunset.

In common with other Persian Gulf Arab countries, sponsorship laws exist in Qatar. These laws have been widely described as akin to modern-day slavery.[34] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qatar#cite_note-33) The sponsorship system (kafeel or kafala) exists throughout the GCC, apart from Bahrain, and means that a worker (not a tourist) may not enter the country without having a kafeel; cannot leave without the kafeel's permission (an exit permit must first be awarded by the sponsor, or kafeel); and the sponsor has the right to ban the employee from entering Qatar within 2–5 years of his first departure. Many sponsors do not allow the transfer of one employee to another sponsor. This does not apply to special sponsorship of a Qatar Financial Centre-sponsored worker where it is encouraged and regulated that sponsorship should be uninhibited and assistance should be given to allow for such transfers of sponsorship.

Heat: Mexico 86 : temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, combined with altitude

Attractions outside the WC: oil $$$$ + 12 years to build attractions; not complicated

laws: do you really think they will aplly their laws while the World is watching?
Besides, The Qatari government is looking to make a shitload of $$$$$ out of the WC, they will loosen up.
And when China won the bid for the 2008 Olympics, everybody brought up the lack of democracy and stuff.... but nothing outraging occured during the Olympics
Heck, Pau Gasol & Co made fun of Chinese people and got away with it

Status of football: who cares, they have enough $$$$ to host a good tournament

But, I like to see a WC in that part of the world and I like Qatar's plans. They have some awesome stadium designs. It's a shame the US did not get it, because football is getting more and more popular over there and hosting a world cup would increase that so much more.

I honestly felt Qatar had no shot, and logically when you add up all the negatives they shouldnt have a shot. Temperatures, poor football tradition, conservative culture, small size, the issue of what happens to the stadiums after, etc...just goes to show people that money really does talk. Sep Blatter probably took the biggest paycheck of his life from them, good retirement plan on his part tbh. Russia is acceptable, although England wouldve been my pick. Honestly the countries with the biggest investments won, thats all it comes down to it. FIFA is about that money. Bullshit picks imho.

I get Russia... but Qatar? I country that is not fond of drinking? Are they going to publicly stone the Holland Beer Girls when they show up in 2022?

What a fucking joke. Russia is the biggest non-football developed country in the world, so I understand wanting to host it there. Football is very undeveloped in the middle east too, but seriously... a country the size of Conneticut? With a population of the size of San Antonio?

But who are we kidding, we know FIFA is not a clean organization.

I think it is safe to say that russia is a footballing nation.

Obviously both picks had a lot to do with oil money. but its definitely not the first time that money influences a world cup bid, or any organization for that matter.

I'm not wild about either of the picks, but I dont get some of the criticism. what was the USA football pedigree in 94? or japan and korea in 02? south africa in 2010? shit you could even argue what was mexico's pedigree in 70/86, or chile in 62, switzerland 54, sweden 58...

I don't like the fact that russia is huge and the time zones will likely be crazy, and I dont like the fact that qatar is hot as hell, though there have been several shorter cups and friendlies in the region and I dont recall issues in those cases.

as for the laws in the country, frankly manny, i'd be more concerned about the lack of law in russia than the law in qatar :lol though you do have a point about qatar lacking other attractions for tourists. In that sense I'd have a much harder time convincing my wife to go to Qatar for a WC than the US or Japan for a WC. As lefty says though this is a business, the main value for the host country is tourism and I dont think the Qatari govt is stupid enough to jeapordize their WC investment over some beer. If anything this should be good news for progressives in the middle east as it will show that a little beer and a little cleavage never hurt anyone (unless hooligans ruin it! :lol )

Remember the 2006 WC scandal? South Africa should have won it

Scandal dogs bidding war over Soccer World Cup

By Chris Marsden

The world of international soccer has been gripped by scandal over the awarding to Germany of the right to host the 2006 World Cup. The decision was the result of a controversial vote by the sports ruling body, FIFA, last week, in which a German victory by 12 votes to 11 over rival South Africa was made possible by the abstention of Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) President Charlie Dempsey of New Zealand, who was delegated to vote for the African country after England dropped out. If Dempsey had voted for South Africa the ballot would have been level. FIFA President Sepp Blatter favoured South Africa and would have cast the tie-breaking vote.
This has produced outrage in South Africa and provoked an internal inquiry by FIFA into the bidding war for the rights to host the World Cup. South African President Thabo Mbeki told a business conference in Midrand, near Johannesburg, that the voting procedure “has got elements of dishonesty about it”. South African Sports Minister Ngconde Balfour called the decision “a loss by one vote because one old man from New Zealand decided not to vote”. “Africa is tired of being dictated to in processes like this,” he said. Nevertheless FIFA says the vote stands.
Dempsey has been cast as a pariah figure by much of the world's media, but the 78-year-old man seems to be guilty only of having gotten in out of his depth. His justification for abstaining speaks volumes about the character of a contest over what is certainly the world's richest and for many the most prestigious sporting event.
Dempsey's version of events at times reads like a scene from the Godfather depicting a Mafia turf-war that somehow found its way to the cutting-room floor. He said on Monday he abstained from the final ballot in Zurich because he feared a vote for either Germany or South Africa would be detrimental to soccer in the 11 Oceania nations, as a vote either way would have made enemies for the OFC in FIFA. He hoped the no-vote would ensure the OFC would make no enemies and stay friends with all concerned. “It had also been made clear to me by influential European interests that if I cast my vote in favour of South Africa, there would be adverse effects for OFC and FIFA.,” he explained. “I thought the Asians were going to vote for South Africa, apparently there was a change at five or six in the morning—everyone was voting for everyone at one stage.... They switched, but nothing has been aimed at them,” he continued.
Last weekend Dempsey, speaking to reporters in Singapore midway through his flight home, said, “The last two days have been something horrible.... Football is no longer a sport, it's a political scene.” He explained that he had been placed under “intolerable pressure ... not by the actual bidding people, but by people on the fringe and incessant phone calls I was receiving in my room and also the attempt to bribe me.” The New Zealander said he had received calls telling him how to vote: “I did get cranky calls and I was a bit concerned about it, but it wasn't life-threatening, but I was told what I had to do.”
Initially attention was focused on the activities of the German satirical magazine Titanic, which had faxed 8 members of the 24-member FIFA executive committee, including Dempsey, offering small bribes for backing Germany and arranging for hotel staff to slide faxes under delegates' doors around midnight.
Dempsey told the OFC Monday, “That's when I took real fright ... that night was a nightmare. Up until the whole of the pressure came on, I would've been voting for South Africa.” He had contacted his lawyers and other delegates to the OFC before he made his decision.
Despite the satirical hoax, there was nothing imagined about the pressure on Dempsey. He has also said that amongst the calls he had received were ones from former South African President Nelson Mandela and British Prime Minister Tony Blair. “I got contact from Mr. Blair and I've got to tell you something, I discovered I was in the world scene,” he said.
Dempsey's actions came at the end of a scramble over the right to an event that would bring money and political prestige for the host nation. Against a background of raging international power politics that even involved heads of state, and money being thrown around like water, FIFA delegates were forced to play often very low politics for very high stakes.
For many there were strong political considerations to register a vote for South Africa. It would be interpreted as an endorsement of Europe's staunchest ally on a continent that exports some of the world's finest soccer players, but has never hosted a World Cup tournament. Their hosting the event would also have counteracted complaints that the event is primarily Europe's baby.
The potential financial rewards for South Africa were high. Tickets for top games can fetch upwards of $100 and this all goes to the host country. Economists had forecast that a winning bid would create 130,000 jobs, boost gross domestic product by 2 percent and lead to $2.3 billion in foreign investment. When the bid failed the rand fell against the dollar and shares dropped by 0.7 percent.
The European soccer federation UEFA were always determined that the event be hosted in Germany, however, and the most powerful country in Europe did everything they could to make this happen. Their bid was led by footballing legend Franz Beckenbauer, who was joined by Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, tennis superstar Boris Becker and supermodel Claudia Schiffer. Beckenbauer argued that the fact that West Germany had hosted the 1974 World Cup was irrelevant because of its subsequent reunification with the former East Germany. He said of the bid's success that it “should be seen as greater than that of [Germany's] World Cup victories in 1974 and 1990.” A debate in parliament was interrupted for an announcement of Germany's victory.
The only fly in Germany's European ointment was England, which had made their own bid for the World Cup, having broken a “gentleman's agreement” with Germany to back them in return for its support for England hosting the 1996 European Cup. England squandered 10 million pounds, twice as much as anyone else, on schmoozing FIFA delegates and themselves at expensive parties, booking the best hotels and hiring villas. Just over £3 million came from the national lottery. It not only promised to help develop football in countries where votes could be won like Trinidad and Thailand, but even allowed top team Manchester United to withdraw from the national FA Cup and compete in the world club championship in Brazil in an attempt to win three South American FIFA votes.
Having angered the pro-German UEFA, however, the British received just two votes and were summarily knocked out. The behind-the-scenes politicking and the prestige attached to the World Cup bid was epitomised in a somewhat bitter editorial in the July 6 edition of Britain's leading business journal, the Financial Times, which feigned sympathy for South Africa as an excuse for anti-German rhetoric. FIFA's not voting for South Africa after Britain's elimination, “was a shame, a mistake, and a badly missed opportunity.... As for Germany's success, it restores football to the status once described by Gary Lineker, the former England player, as a game played by 11 men against 11 men, in which Germany always wins in the end.”

6 FIFA members accused of accepting bribes for 2018/2022 bids

LONDON (AP)—Soccer’s governing body was hit with new corruption allegations Tuesday when six FIFA executive committee members were accused of receiving or demanding bribes during bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Issa Hayatou of Cameroon and Jacques Anouma of the Ivory Coast were allegedly paid $1.5 million to vote for Qatar, according to evidence submitted to a British parliamentary inquiry by The Sunday Times newspaper.

The Gulf nation beat the United States in the final round of voting in December for the 2022 tournament. Qatar’s soccer federation released a statement later Tuesday, denying the “serious and baseless” allegations that will “remain unproven because they are false.”

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the House of Commons also heard from the former head of England’s 2018 bid, who described the conduct of executive committee members Jack Warner, Nicolas Leoz, Ricardo Teixeira and Worawi Makudi in the 2018 contest as “improper and unethical.”

The parliamentary panel is looking into England’s failed bid for the World Cup as part of a wider inquiry into soccer governance.

In Zurich, FIFA President Sepp Blatter said he will ask for evidence that supports the claims and forward any allegations to the FIFA ethics committee.

“I cannot say they are all angels or they are all devils,” he said of the executive members.

“We must have the evidence and then we will act immediately against all those (who) would be breach of the ethical code rules,” Blatter added.

Referring to his bid for re-election next month against Mohammed bin Hammam of Qatar, Blatter said: “I’m fighting to clear FIFA, I’m fighting to clean FIFA.”

The bidding contest was rocked even before the vote when The Sunday Times published in October details of an undercover investigation that led to two of FIFA’s 24 executive committee members being suspended.

Amos Adamu of Nigeria was found guilty by FIFA’s ethics court of soliciting bribes from undercover reporters, while Reynald Temarii of Tahiti was banned for breaching rules on confidentiality and loyalty.

The British newspaper sent further evidence—which it did not publish at the time for legal reasons—to the British committee on Monday to be made public using parliamentary privilege.

Two of the paper’s investigative journalists told the committee in a letter that a whistleblower who had worked for the Qatari bid told them in December that the country “had paid $1.5 million to two FIFA ExCo members—Hayatou and Jacques Anouma of the Ivory Coast—to secure their votes.”

Reporters Jonathan Calvert and Claire Newell added that “a similar deal had been struck with Amos Adamu, although he was prevented from voting because he was suspended following our original article.

Fifa requests FA evidence
Valcke expresses deep concern in letter following Triesman claims

Fifa has expressed its 'extreme concern' at the latest allegations of World Cup bidding corruption and asked the Football Association to provide a full report of the claims.

Former FA and England 2018 chairman Lord Triesman alleged in Parliament on Tuesday that four Fifa members had asked for money or favours in return for World Cup votes.

Two other Fifa members were separately alleged to have been paid to vote for Qatar's 2022 bid.

Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke has now contacted the FA to request evidence.

"In his letter to the FA, the FIFA secretary general expresses the extreme concern of FIFA and the FIFA President at the latest allegations questioning the integrity of some FIFA Executive Committee members in connection with the bidding procedure for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups," read a Fifa statement.

Thorough examination

"He adds that to be in a position to examine the situation thoroughly and with clear-sightedness, FIFA asks the FA to submit a complete report from Lord David Triesman, by means of which the latter would relate his declarations fully and provide any and all documentary evidence at his disposal."

The allegations of bribes paid for votes for Qatar were contained in a submission to the culture, media and sport committee by the Sunday Times.

The Fifa statement went on: "The FIFA secretary general has also sent a letter to The Sunday Times to ask the newspaper to provide FIFA with any piece of evidence with regard to the statements made to MP John Whittingdale.

"The Sunday Times had already provided world's football governing body with all of the evidence and documentation at its disposal. Nevertheless, FIFA asks the English newspaper to submit as soon as possible any other piece of evidence that it may be in possession of and which has not yet been sent to FIFA.

"In particular, reference is made in the letter to the allegations regarding a 'whistleblower who had worked with the Qatar bid', who allegedly made some declarations regarding the matter in question."

Fifa president Sepp Blatter under investigation

Fifa has opened ethics proceedings against its president, Sepp Blatter.

The action follows a charge by Mohamed Bin Hammam, his rival in next week's presidency election, that Blatter knew about alleged cash payments.

Bin Hammam and vice-president Jack Warner will also be at Sunday's hearing to answer charges of bribery.

LOL the two candidates for FIFA president under investigation for corruption. Basically, whoever wins the presidency will be exonerated and the other will be banned and FIFA will continue it's corrupt ways thinking they've managed to appear legit. All the top nations (economically, not football-wise) should withdraw from FIFA and start their own org. Tell Russia they can still host 2018 and offer one of the other Asian powers 2022 to win their support, US in 2026 to win CONCACAF (outside of the shitty corrupt islands) support, Argentina/Uraguay gets 2030 to win S American support and kthxbai to FIFA

The US hosted a cup quite recently in WC/fifa standards, there are other much more deserving countries, simple as that. England has a much, much better argument to host its second WC than the US does, really the only argument for the US is money but as the Qatar bid shows a WC will make money regardless of where it is hosted.

As for FIFA corruption, of course it sucks and who wouldnt like reform, but it happens in every pro sports league. There is too much easy money for execs to make from the fans, as long as that's the case there will be corruption in sport.

If Switzerland, Sweden, Chile, Japan/Korea, and South Africa can host a cup (all smaller countries, some with low footie culture/pedigree), then so can Qatar. From a heat/environmental conditions standpoint, the eastern coast of the americas (Brazil, Mexico, US, Argentina/Uruguay WC's I'm looking at you) is just as taxing for a player as the middle east- maybe even moreso, because to maximize the TV dollar they have to play at midday on the eastern coast of the americas, but in the middle east they will likely play at night.

Football always has and always will be the world game, using cultural reasons to disqualify the arabs is weak. did they make bribes? Without having seen a shred of evidence and not following the news closely, I would bet my left nut they did. But do you fools think the same didnt happen in every other WC bid, in the olympics bids, or even when some corp is looking for a HQ or a new factory, or when the local govt near you needs to allocate govt funds. thats life, I'm not saying people should just look the other way, but it looks pathetic to get zealous and want to disqualify one process when you dont do the same the zillion other times it happens around you...

I've been out of town on a mini vacation, but to follow up on my point...

disqualifying Qatar for being culturally backwards by western standards (homophobia, women's rights, alcohol consumption I believe are the main arguments against) is weak because those things dont have anything to do with football. When western countries had those same problems (homophobia, women's rights), they still had world cups. Hosting a world cup will help qatar and other arab nations "catch up" on these issues, its not like they are wavering to change but are going to back off because they've been validated by a world cup. On the contrary, a massive influx of foreigners (that arent soldiers!) will only help the region grow up and become more integrated to the world community.

The only valid reasons IMO to really object to a country's bid would be genocide, war, or a dictatorship that oppresses, censors, steals from its people, or destroys the environment. The only cultural reason I can think of right now might be cannibalism, anarchy, or institutionalized pedophilia, none of which is the case here (or ever).

And even if that were the case and Qatar were so backwards that they dont deserve a WC, England would still be more deserving than the US. Really, I dont see any good reason for the US hosting another WC for the next 20 years

well, another thing to consider is that qatar is more progressive than other ME states. AFAIK, they dont practice female circumcision and actually allow women to vote; they are also home base for Al Jazeera, which i believe has played an important role in modernizing the region. I'll stick to my position that giving them a WC will help liberalize them more and show other ME states that by opening up and embracing human rights they will be accepted by the world community.

lol....so they were just discussing the Qatar WC on Pardon the Interruption, and apparently the groups planning/constructing the stadiums have basically said..."yeah, it's way too fucking hot in Qatar. This artificial cloud shit probably isn't going to work out very well."

...oh wow...what a shocker!!!! it's very, very, very hot in Qatar????

...you're telling me that artificial, climate-cooling clouds over stadiums may NOT be readily available, efficient, and practical?????? WOW!! Who would have known??!?!?!!?

/sarcasm

They said they will have to consider playing 3 30-minute periods a la hockey, even in indoor stadiums, because it's still too damn hot inside.

Blatter awaiting new evidence
July 29, 2011

FIFA president Sepp Blatter says he does not have any intention of taking the 2022 World Cup away from Qatar but could reconsider if new evidence comes to light.

Serious questions have been raised over FIFA's decision to award the World Cup to Qatar, with the bribery charges brought against Qatari Mohammed Bin Hammam adding to the initial concerns over the climate and local laws.

Blatter has announced that a Solutions Committee, featuring Nobel Peace Prize winner Henry Kissinger, will launch an investigation to clean up the governing body and has now vowed to take action if suitable evidence arises.

"Now, at this moment, we are not touching the Qatar World Cup, but we are going step by step into the matters we have to realise and if somewhere through this Solutions Committee they should say we have to have a look at that, then we will do that," he said.

Newly-elected FIFA executive committee member Theo Zwanziger earlier called for the 2022 decision to be reopened, but Blatter added: "When I spoke with Zwanziger he realised it's too easy to say we should re-open things. He knows he has to first come to FIFA with the evidence and everybody must produce evidence.

"Concerning the sponsors, I haven't received any, let's say, reservations made by any sponsor of FIFA that we should change anything with Qatar yet."
