Even though this is an iPhone app, I'm throwing it out there in case there is an Android version as well. I really like the app Sky Grid because it takes tons of news links and puts them in one app. And the links are for almost anything you'd want to know, politics, current events, finances, tech stuff, phones and gaming, sports, etc.

Maybe there isn't a Sky Grid, but rather a similar app. I like it as I can keep up lots of things going on in the world since I don't have tons of time to surf the internet or watch tv these days.

there is. News360. My favorite news app. I havent's seen sky grid but news 360 gets 10/10 from me.

I got the Samsung 10.1 tab and it works for me. The wife has smaller tab and its perfect for her and work because it fits in her purse just fine.

Outta curiosity, does anyone know how to make an SMS notification tone? Like, say, for example, I wanted to use Xander Crews' "Ka-kow!" as my alert. How might one go about that.

usually you have to cut the part you want yourself, have it as a mp3 file?
throw the file in your SD card in a folder called "notifications"

now on the phone itself, open up settings in the SMS app and look for "select ringtone notification" or something of that nature

Frenzy

Poon I used apps rototone and ringtone maker. I especially liked roto cause you can make a playlist for your notication sounds, not that you wanted that. Just sayin

Thanks, fellas. I'll give these a shot.

Tryin to find a sample of just the audio to snip, as opposed to both the audio and video (ie YouTube).

I'd just use the voice recorder on your phone to copy it from your computer(YT) to your SD card. This cuts out the need to find just an audio sample. Quality won't be stellar, but for a one second notification, who gives a fuck?

Then use something like ringdroid to trim it however you like.

Totally time invested should be less than a minute.

So, the new Android 2.3.3 update is pretty much fucking over all sorts of devices on all sorts of carriers. The most pertinent of the problems is that after updating, several people are losing the ability to CHARGE THEIR PHONE. Plugging into a charger simply does not seem to be recognized, nor is the USB Mass Storage feature if you connect by USB to a computer.

Lots of people complaining about it here, as well as other forums:
http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/android/f/94/t/12062.aspx?PageIndex=2

Someone remind me how this is supposed to be superior to iOS?

And yes, this is also affecting my Optimus S phone. Updated to 2.3.3 yesterday, now when I plug it in the charging symbol does not appear and I can sit and watch the battery continue to drain (using the OEM wall-charger, or the OEM USB-cable to either my Mac or PC).

Tried re-downloading the drivers for my PC, there are no drivers for Mac (which is what I use primarily and used to work just fine). Have not gotten a chance to backup my data and do a Factory Restore, but apparently that hasn't been helping a lot of people either. Apparently LG/Sprint's response is to "wait for another update".

Did anyone on sprint get a forced update? Not a software update, just a notification of an update? If so, check your 3g speeds, are they better?

Last night a lot of people got an update (even those that are rooted) and their pings are now under 75, their DLs are a stable 1.5+ and DL is a stable 800-1000.

I did not receive the update.

CM7 port running on an Optimus One. OC'd to 480/729 MHz, it pretty much runs everything I need it to.

Yes, it's an entry-level phone, but I didn't want to risk too much money on my first foray into Android. Plus, even at the price level, it's a nice little phone.

Now that I'm more comfortable with Android, I'll probably upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus when it comes out.

never used a google phone before and I'm having some problems with one

google sync isn't syncing the picasa web albums anymore, tries for a sec than fails, doesn't say why. and if I do get that working again, how do i tell it to use the SD card?

also, attachments in gmail always open with "office suite" (which I can't uninstall) and I can't find an option or setting anywhere to get them to open in google drive(Docs) for cloud printing among other things

I don't want to install a secondary pic syncing app, or printing app, that defeats the purpose of a google phone integrating with google services IMO, and since the phone isn't mine, I'd probably better not try rooting it unless it's pretty safe and easy

phone is Sony Xperia SK-17a, OS version 2.3.4

any advice would be much appreciated

If nothing else, uninstall gdocs, then reinstall and the next time you try to open a document, it should ask what you want to open with and give the chance to set as default.

you can use the Google talk app to link up to others on the talk app (through their computer or phone). You can IM, or if they have a microphone, you can talk, or if they have a camera you can video chat.

You should be able to adjust the cropping so you get most of the photo, but if it's forcing you to crop it's to prevent the image from getting stretched/distorted.

Seems like that phone's running a customized Android OS (also called a custom ROM) called ONIX (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f60/rom-onix-froyo-for-droid-36104/).

A quick Google brings up a way of restoring the phones's original, unrooted OS (http://theunlockr.com/2010/06/04/how-to-unroot-the-motorola-droid/), although since I've never owned that phone, I've never tried this method and can't guarantee it'll work.

Android’s Multiple User Accounts Shown Off On Video – All But Confirmed For Future Versions of Android

posted on Aug 2nd 2012 at 10:32pm by Chris Chavez
Share This Story http://phandroid.com/img/share.tt.jpg (http://phandroid.com/2012/08/02/androids-multiple-user-accounts-shown-off-on-video-all-but-confirmed-for-future-versions-of-android/#)

http://phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Android-AOSP-Multiple-User-Accounts-Phandrizzle-635x564.png (http://phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Android-AOSP-Multiple-User-Accounts-Phandrizzle.png)
Here we go, guys. This is where we separate the kiddie mobile OS’s from the big boys: multiple user accounts. We’ve heard about it. We’ve dreamed about it. We want it. The good news is that we recently discovered early versions of it already baked into Jelly Bean AOSP, so we know Google has, at the very least, been toying around with the idea.
Today, a developer over on XDA managed to activate the sleeping code, getting multiple user accounts to appear in the power menu (activated when holding down the power button), and although it should work on any AOSP ROM (CM10, AOKP) there’s not much functionality. He showed off his handiwork in a video tutorial and after typing out a few lines of code in Terminal Emulator, you too can get multiple users accounts up and running on your ROM. Check it out.
Another user managed to get it up and running on his Galaxy Nexus and provided some info on what’s working and what isn’t.

I found that in the second account there are apps that I don’t have in the primary account, for example: Google Wallet, Play Magazines, Play Books and Play Films. (I’m from Belgium)
Oh, they disappeared as soon as I signed in with my Google account. http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
If you are on the second user, most of the data from the primary user is hidden (you can not acces it).
For example:
- photo’s
- unlocked levels in Angry Birds
- music
- contacts
- google account
- clipboard
- home screen
But there are a few exceptions:
- all the apps are there, as if they were just installed
- the recent apps menu
- the use-app-as-default-setting (I don’t know the official name). For example: if you set Apex as default in the Guest account, it will also be default in the primary account.
- your messages (!)
Google software engineer Amith Yamasani actually addressed multiple user accounts after a dev attempted to submit a patch to AOSP tweaking the order of the power menu while multiple accounts were enabled. After rejecting the patch, Yamasani warned that, “Multi-user feature is not ready for deployment. Bad things will happen if you use it in its current state!” Yamasani went on to confirm that the Android user experience team has the final say on the UI for multiple UA’s and it will most likely change in the future. Shweeet…
The convenience of having multiple user accounts is something Android tablet users, specifically those with families, have been asking for awhile now. While it wouldn’t make much sense for smartphone users (other than having, say, a work accounts along with personal one) it looks like the possibility of multiple user accounts is all but certain in future versions of Android. Key Lime Pie perhaps?

Apex Launcher adds some Jelly Bean features:

http://lifehacker.com/5932468/apex-launcher-brings-jelly-bean-features-to-ice-cream-sandwich-phones

The new version of the launcher—which is technically in beta—is based on Jelly Bean code, meaning it's got quite a few performance improvements under the hood, and it's smoother than ever. It also has Jelly Bean's automatic widget resizing, so when you place a widget on the home screen, it moves icons out of its way and resizes itself to fit automatically. You can also quickly remove apps and widgets by flinging them to the edge of the home screen, and if you're on Jelly Bean, you'll get a few fancy animations as well.

For anyone looking for a bluetooth keyboard, the one for the HP touchpad is only 21 bucks on amazon now. It is a great keyboard (and doesn't have to be used with the touchpad). Sorry for the hijack, but I didn't want to start a whole new thread for this.

Damn, thanks! I may just snag this for my iPad, looks perfect.

It is a great keyboard and just sips the batteries. I have the same batteries that I put in there exactly a year ago when I got it.

You are welcome. Also, I don't know if you can do this kind of stuff with the ipad, but I know I was able to remap some of the keys (like the hp specific ones) in android.

Incidentally, those keys work just like the Apple ones in iOS as well as MacOS. Maybe a tiny nod to those days when HP briefly made iPods :lol

I think that all the keys do something in android too, but I found that (for example) the cards key didn't do anything as useful as I would have liked it to. I made it the "home" button, but if you are happy without mods, then awesome.

nah... I'm not as tech savvy as most in these threads so I didn't want to fuck up the warranty agreement or harm the phone in some way. My RM wasn't too terribly bad as far as bloatware goes, so I haven't seen a need for clearing that stuff out.

Also (don't know if you need something like this for any reason), but as long as you have a google voice account and wifi, you can use the GrooveIP app and do voip calling through your wifi on your old phone.

ah ok, well since I made my google voice number the same as my regular number, I figured that when I replace the ol' evo3d, I will probably make it a music player and a "home phone"

I dont know, as you said, it is a cool thing to be able to do (especially if you are somewhere with bad reception).

I got the free 10 bucks from google from my backup phone (nexus s) and I really liked the whole wallet concept for vending machines. They have a few at school and that is pretty convenient since I never carry cash or change. I still can't see myself completely leaving my wallet at home.

Google Maps will now show your directions and places history from desktop

Google has announced some nice changes to Google Maps that will make it more convenient for people to locate their most frequently visited places. Google will bring up your directions and places search history from your desktop searches to autocomplete places you might be looking for on mobile.
This is a very much needed feature for yours truly, and I’m amazed it took to so long. You’ll need to be signed in to your Google account with web history enabled for this to work, but the process to do all that is quite fast and easy. Go ahead and try it on your phone, and get Google Maps from the Google Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.maps&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5nb 29nbGUuYW5kcm9pZC5hcHBzLm1hcHMiXQ..) if you don’t already have it (for shame). the disparity comes from the fact that CDMA is a proprietary technology and it therefore takes longer to get it to verizon and sprint, but verizon is by far the longest taking carrier. (sprint got theirs about a month ago.

New Nexus device to be based on HTC Droid Incredible X [RUMOR]

http://phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/google-nexus-logo1.jpg
The HTC Droid Incredible X is expected to launch this fall as the Taiwanese mobile maker’s answer to phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note. A new rumor also has it forming the basis for one of several (http://phandroid.com/2012/05/15/google-to-offer-multiple-android-5-0-nexus-devices-will-sell-direct-to-consumer-through-google-play/) new Nexus devices expected to launch during the holiday season (http://phandroid.com/2012/05/23/google-to-release-5-nexus-devices-on-november-5th-to-celebrate-5-years-of-android-rumor/). It seems likely that Google will shift their Nexus strategy from one new device per year to a selection of devices from several different manufacturers, and HTC’s offering could borrow the 5-inch display and quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro rumored for the Incredible X.
A source claiming to have insider knowledge from within HTC says the fourth-generation Nexus handset will launch with Android 4.1.2, a mild OS update featuring Project Butter improvements and lockscreen enhancements as well as other tweaks and fixes. Other rumored specs include a 12MP camera and 2,500mAh battery. The 5-inch display at 1080p resolution could earn the device the name of Nexus 5, a take on the Nexus 7 moniker.
For now, take this as a rumor flavored with a heavy dose of salt. We have little substantiate any of the above claims.

HTC One S, One X to get HTC Sense 4+ with Jelly Bean this October

posted on Oct 2nd 2012 at 8:44am by Quentyn Kennemer

Tucked away neatly in the HTC One X+ press release was word that the HTC One S and the HTC One X would be getting a great software upgrade this month. The company confirmed that Jelly Bean would be headed to these two devices, as well as the latest version of HTC Sense — HTC Sense+, if you haven’t heard.

Sense 4+ will add Tap and Go, which is a feature that allows users to connect their smartphones to a Beats speakers’4 unit simply by tapping it with their phone. It’ll also bring a new version of HTC Watch, as well as a video hub app.

If you’re using a version of the device through a carrier you may be subject to delays as they do further testing and/or evaluation, but those with unlocked devices should be enjoying the device by Halloween.
