will both of these choices support the logic studio recording program?

you mean the 1700 mbpro? or the 1200 one. in that case both are identical except for the 2gb ram difference

thanks....although i have no idea what you're talking about.

logic studio, logic express and garageband are the music programs for the mac. logic studio software is $500. we're thinking about getting him the macbook or macbook pro with the software for christmas. pretty pricey.

I'll get ragged on for this, but my choice would be the pro, with the optional 1920 x 1200 resolution.

I didn't comment on that thread and could care less what screen resolution you use, but I did read part of that thread and, well, I just couldn't pass it up.

I'd go with the MacBook Pro. I had the 15" and ran ProTools, Reason, Live, BFD2, Recycle and many other sampling programs and it cooked. Is your son, I'm assuming, familiar with Logic?

what do ya think about the keyboard for logic studio?

Viva Las Espuelas

Oh, and one thing. Don't know if you know or if your kid already has one but DAW's(ProTools, Logic, etc) recommends an external HD for all recordings. It's optimal for the computers drive to handle the function and the external disk to handle the actual recording/playback. I'm not sure what Logic requires but PT requires a 7200 rpm disk which is kind of a bitch to find with FireWire. Hopefully that wasn't a suckerpunch to you.

How do you mean? The midi controller keyboard or one of those shortcut keyboards with colored keys and all that? I use an Axiom 61. Pretty nifty gadget. Those shortcut keyboards are ok. My buddy has one but me personally didnt feel it made things easier. I just made a file, put it in the dock, put all keyboard+mouse shortcuts in it and went back and forth between that. Better than looking up and down.

Nope. You'll have to check. I'm not too familiar with Logic. You'll have to check the requirements. It's what I had to do to get my ProTools rig up.

the shortcut keyboard.

now that you said he'd need an external drive.........screw the keyboard.

Yeah. It can be but check out if Logic does require that. Like I said, it's what I had to go through with ProTools.

And yes that shortcut keyboard is about $120. If I'm not mistaken there's a skin you can buy. I think I remember seeing those out there.

:lol I'm not pulling your lariat. :lol you need a recording interface to get sounds/midi into the laptop. Luckily you're not putting together a ProTools rig. What all is your kid wanting to do with this? Recording wise and all that.

lucky kid... ridiculous parent. kids don't deserve $1000+ gifts, i don't care how good they are all yr. i would've got him an ipod and called it a day, an old cheap ipod at that.

depends on what inputs you'd like... i used to have an m-audio device my friend let me borrow for a while that i would hook 2 rockband drums into, a real electric guitar, and a mic. it was killer!

Well if he's able to it that way then he'll be safe with logic. ProTools is the only DAW that's proprietary so you should be fine, but I'm not too familiar with Logic so you'll have to check.

My friend, an artist, got the macbook. He was a bit disappointed because of some overheating issues. He regrets not ponying up for the aluminum chassis model.

Audacity is free.

Well yeah, but Logic is a pretty beefy program to start off on. I really don't know how advanced your kid is with recording, how serious he is and what not. That's all I meant by that, really.

it didn't take him very long to blow through garageband and pinpoint the things he couldn't do with the program.

its amazing how advanced kids are these days.
