LOS ANGELES — The rehabilitation and return of Andrew Bynum has been an underlying theme to the Lakers’ season on two major fronts:
* How Bynum’s absence impacts the wear and tear on Pau Gasol, whose performance is suffering along with his left hamstring.
* How important it is for him to be healthy when the playoffs roll around.
But what about the longer view?
How many more seasons can the Lakers, as their core of Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and Gasol head into their 30s, afford to play with a big man tied behind their back?
Bynum is the third-highest-paid Laker this season, at $13.8 million, and within 18 months, the Lakers will have to make a decision on whether to exercise the $16.8 million option on the final year of his contract or extend the deal beyond 2012-13.
