Atlanta Hawks: Zaza is out sick; Hawks to stay big (http://blogs.ajc.com/hawks/2010/12/09/atlanta-hawks-zaza-is-out-sick-hawks-to-stay-big/?cxntfid=blogs_hawks)
by Michael Cunningham

News and notes . . .

Zaza is sick and won’t make the trip to San Antonio. I refuse to be blamed for this. My theory is he caught something from the Magic players (http://blogs.ajc.com/hawks/2010/12/06/atlanta-hawks-magic-sick-to-their-stomachs/) because they banged with Zaza in the post, not me.

Anyway, L.D. said he plans to stick with the Bibby, Marvin, Smoove, Al, Twin lineup. So far the results of the big lineup have been good, particularly on defense (http://www.82games.com/1011/10ATL14.HTM#onoff).

Not sure how the look would do long term but right now L.D. is deploying Collins in situations where his bulk is a plus and his relative lack of mobility and rebounding are masked. The Hawks benefit because they don’t have to scramble all the time.

“We are able to play straight up and not have to run around trying to get to shooters,” Drew said.

But now the Hawks run into the Parker-Ginobili-Duncan pick-and-roll-a-rama. They caught a break when Jameer was out for the Magic and defending the screen-rolls wasn’t much of an issue against the Nets since the Hawks were scoring whenever they felt like it.

So this is the first big test for the big lineup against an opponent that can carve the Hawks up.

“If one of my big guys get into trouble I will look to the bench,” L.D. said.

– Collins has already played more minutes (http://www.nba.com/playerfile/jason_collins/career_stats.html) this season than he did all of last year. The possibility of more playing time was motivation for him to get in shape over the summer.

“Either way, I’m ready,” Collins said. “I’m a professional. Whenever my name and number is called, I am ready to go out there and help my team win. It doesn’t make a difference to me. As a professional, you have to always be ready.

“I really worked hard this offseason to put myself in a position to help my team. Whenever my name and number is called, I am ready to go out there and play.”

That’s a true vet answer. There’s a reason he’s stuck around this long.

– The theme for the Hawks before they left for San Antonio was transition D. That’s always a point of emphasis for L.D., especially on the road, but Parker is a menace in the open court and the Spurs rank 10th in pace factor (http://espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/teamstats/_/sort/paceFactor) and fourth in fastbreak points per game (http://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/fastbreak-points-per-game).

They are also seventh in defensive efficiency and second in offensive efficiency. That’s why they are 18-3 (http://www.nba.com/standings/team_record_comparison/conferenceNew_Std_Cnf.html) with Ws against OKC, Utah, Chicago, Orlando, and New Orleans (twice).

“A typical Spurs team,” L.D. said. “Just solid in every aspect of the game.”

That’s how it figures to be as long as Duncan and Gregg Popovich are around. Pop was a coach for the the 2003 U.S. National Team, which Bibby helped to a 10-0 finish at the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico.

Bibby said his experience with Pop is why he’s not surprised by San Antonio’s amazing consistency (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_San_Antonio_Spurs_seasons)

“Good guy, but he makes you work,” Bibby said. “I can see it. Ever since I’ve been playing they’ve had the best defensive teams in the league. I remember first coming in they were the hardest team for me to play against because of their help defense. They are just great defensively.”

– After slumping a bit amid his very public marital problems Parker has found his groove again (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2010/12/05/parker-my-aggression-is-back/). From Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News:

Parker has endured the public scrutiny associated with the breakup of his marriage to actress Eva Longoria. Both have filed divorce petitions, with the accompanying tabloid publicity.

The effect on Parker’s game was most pronounced in Los Angeles, where he scored only two points in a loss to the Clippers after reportedly meeting with Longoria at the team hotel before the game.

After scoring 19 points and handing out six assists in just 26 minutes and 46 seconds of the Spurs’ 109-84 victory over the New Orleans Hornets at the AT&T Center on Sunday, Parker said he believes he has returned to the productive level of play that characterized the first weeks of the season.

Hmmmm, didn't know that happened, though I figured something like that happened when he played that game. Interesting.... Hopefully Eva Longroria will stay away from the team hotel if the Spurs face the Lakers in the WCF??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!!??!

Atlanta (15-8) at San Antonio (18-3) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/preview?gid=2010121024)
Tipoff: 8:30 pm EST Fri Dec 10, 2010

For the second time in three nights, a team is visiting San Antonio seeking its first win there since February 1997. This one seems to have a much better chance than the last one.

The Atlanta Hawks have quietly been one of the league’s hotter teams and a recent lineup change has been very effective, but they face the league-best Spurs on Friday night in a city where they haven’t won since Tim Duncan’s arrival.

While San Antonio (18-3) has been overshadowed lately by division rival Dallas’ double-digit winning streak, the Hawks have received little attention in the Eastern Conference as Boston and Miami have put together lengthy runs. Atlanta (15-8) has won seven of eight, the only loss coming at Miami.

No East team has a better road record than the Hawks’ 8-3 mark, but Atlanta has lost all 12 trips to San Antonio since Duncan joined the Spurs in the 1997-98 season.

Golden State’s last win there came Feb. 14, 1997. The struggling Warriors dropped their 25th straight in San Antonio with a 111-94 loss Wednesday.

The Hawks, though, did end a seven-game losing streak in the series with a 119-104 overtime victory March 21. That’s one of San Antonio’s only four losses in the past 23 meetings overall.

It also ended a 15-game run in the series during which Atlanta failed to score more than 95 points. The Hawks are coming off one of their best offensive performances, with season highs of 34 assists and 60.3 percent shooting in a 116-101 win over New Jersey on Tuesday.

Josh Smith had a season-high 34 points in his second game shifting from power forward to small forward, one night after posting 19 points and 13 rebounds in an 80-74 road win over Southeast Division leader Orlando.

That change allowed center Jason Collins to start while Al Horford switched back to power forward. Marvin Williams was moved to the backcourt to replace an ineffective Maurice Evans, who was filling in for Joe Johnson.

Atlanta is 4-1 since Johnson was lost to an elbow injury.

“We’re just trying to hold down the fort until Joe returns,” Smith said after going 14 of 16 from the field with seven assists Tuesday.

The Spurs are relatively healthy, and a good balance offensively has keyed their current three-game win streak. At least five players scored in double figures in each victory.

Duncan had only eight points Wednesday but was among nine Spurs to score at least seven, and no starter played more than 29 minutes for a second straight game.

“Well hopefully we’re putting something in the bank when we need guys to play 38 or 42 minutes,” coach Gregg Popovich said.

The Spurs are 3-0 on a six-game homestand, and the only loss in their last 10 home games came to Dallas.

“We just try to play well at home, win as much games as we can because we know the second part of our schedule is going to be a lot of games on the road,” said guard Tony Parker, averaging 19.2 points at home compared to 14.2 on the road.

Backcourt mate Manu Ginobili has been struggling, averaging 12.8 points and 29.3 percent shooting in four games this month, but he scored 38 in the last matchup with Atlanta.

Hawks will always be the Hawks. A team that can never quite beat all the .500 and above teams, and always struggle in the playoffs. I'm hoping a Spurs victory tommorow.:flag::flag::flag:

The Hawks are what they've been for half a decade: extremely talented and totally non-cohesive. Josh Smith is fighting with yet another coach over his horrible jumper being overused. What a surprise.

He'd be perfect though next to Tim Duncan wouldn't he?

He'd be perfect though next to Tim Duncan wouldn't he?

Sure, if he had a brain transplant.

He has a horrible attitude, fights constantly with his coach, whoever it is, and insists he's a good jump shooter by firing them up incessantly, when in reality, his J is probably worse than Jacques Vaughn's. He's been in the league for six years. If he hasn't grown up yet, he isn't likely to.

Seeing him ruin our offense by shooting a ton of long two pointers at a low percentage is not my idea of Nirvana.

...One game after extending Golden State’s losing streak in San Antonio to 25 games, Spurs host another team with bad mojo here. Atlanta has lost 12 straight in Alamo City, last winning Feb. 15, 1997, at the Alamodome
