Ousted mayoral candidate Carroll Schubert decided Wednesday who he will back in the runoff election for mayor.
“After a tremendous amount of thought and discussion, I have decided to endorse Phil Hardberger for mayor of San Antonio,” Schubert said at Hardberger’s campaign headquarters close to 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Schubert said he made the decision after meeting separately with both candidates, Hardberger and Julian Castro.
Schubert also admitted he and Hardberger differ of certain things, but in the end, Schubert said Hardberger is a mature leader with fiscal responsibility.
News 4 WOAI talked to Julian Castro Wednesday shortly after Schubert made the decision.
“I’m not surprised,” Castro said. “There’s a small group of developers and lobbyists who want to control City Hall. Carroll Schubert was their first choice, and Phil Hardberger is their backup plan.”
Castro said Schubert called him Wednesday to tell him about the decision.
The runoff election between Hardberger and Castro is June 7th.
