View Full Version : Is it weird to see 13pts 9reb for Tim Duncan?
I'm so used to seeing 20 & 10 across the career board, it's weird seeing his low output (of course in only 28mpg).

You can tell he's taking it easy. There was a moment last night, as the Spurs were mounting a comeback, that I noticed he stepped it up a notch. Right around when he got blocked! But yeah, I think as the season wears on and the Spurs have to close out some tough games Duncan will start putting up better numbers.
The last two seasons, Duncan was a MVP-caliber monster for the first half of the season and then he slowed down (due to fatigue, I'm guessing). I prefer it the other way around.

It's nice to see him taking it easy and the team winning, unlike the last two years where he has looked dominant for half the season then completely burned out by the end of the year. Like the above poster said, it's good to see it the other way around. Everyone else might be saying he's washed up or declining but we all know he's sleepwalking out there.
I don't think Timmy can just flip a switch and put those numbers up on any given night. He didn't shoot well last night, missed several easy ones (like everyone else) and he had his chances. He does it more than seemingly possible, but an entire season of limited play will not make him a beast in the playoffs. It might make him worse. Hard to say.
I do find it amusing that people look at 13 and 9 like it's nothing when referring to Tim, but like it's All Star numbers when referring to Dejuan Blair.

I just think he's taking it easy like how McDyess does. You can tell Tim is just coasting and he should right now because the other guys are stepping up.
People were saying McDyess looked lifeless in the regular season. But he came out ready to play for the playoffs.

hes missing easy ones because hes out of rhythm due to low minutes, i think

How do Duncan's per 48 numbers this year compare to his per 48 numbers for his career?

Yeah, of course its a little weird to see, but I love it. Timmy is just taking it easy, and we're still winning games and blowing out teams. Beautiful.
Timmy and Dice are gonna take it easy for the first half of the Season, and then when its past the All-Star Break and when we head into the Playoffs, Timmy and Dice are gonna turn it up and unleash hell, like they always do.
Oh, and it would be cool if Tiago is balling by that time too. :hat

He just wants to win, as we all do. Whatever gets it done, gets it done.

While his offensive numbers may be down, I've thought he's look better on defense this year than the last few. Seems to have slightly more mobility and quickness. Granted, his man-to-man defense has slipped (as it has been for the last few years), but his team defense remains top-notch.
Actually, how he's looked on defense is why I am not worried about his offense at all.

I've come to grips that Timmy can no longer dominate like he used to. He can still do some damage and is still a top 5 pf. But the real reason is because the Spurs are winning and Timmy is still a part of that. If the spurs were struggling and Timmy had these numbers, then i would be :depressed

he's saving for the playoffs if you ask me. he'll turn another player once the playoff begins.

Everybody has basically already said what I wanted to but the main idea is: Tim is just coasting right now, no point in putting up big numbers and losing energy if the team is winning.
Anybody that thinks this is Timmy's peak is retarded or a delusional Mav/Laker fan. Most likely both.
He's certainly not 2003 Duncan anymore, but he was still a 20-10 guy last season. He can still give us those type of numbers with heavier minutes.

I'm very happy with Duncan's stats. We're winning without using him too much and keeping him fresh for the play-offs.

Tim is just resting because he cant dominate every game. Im sure he will be good in the playoffs and besides we are winning with his numbers like that how much more if his numbers were MVP like. Just wait for the play offs

His per-36 min stats only show a small dropoff in ppg from his career average, while almost everything else is the same.
I'd say he's just fine.

Offensively he's been bad so far, especially in the post. He's not shooting a good percentage in the post at all. There are two big reasons for this:
1) Inability to get good post position/backdown defenders - Tim was never a bruiser, but he had such strong legs that he'd just pin his guy about 2 feet from the basket, catch, and score. Tendinitis has robbed him of that ability to do that consistently. I have a feeling he's going through the motions because he knows that not doing so will result in pain/more wear and tear on his knees. If he's shooting like this come March, then it's time to panic, but for now it's no big deal.
2) Lack of touches/minutes - half the time Tim doesn't get a chance to get into a rhythm out there. He's older and thus needs more time to get warm/loose before he can go out and do all the things he wants, but when he doesn't catch the ball in the post for a long stretch or Pop benches him out for an inordinate number of minutes, he's not going to be as loose. Basically, the very thing that will hopefully keep Tim fresh for later, is hurting his production now. Luckily we don't need it now, but I don't see us shooting 3s this well for the whole year and dominant Tim will be needed eventually.

It's good to see Tim get low minutes and yet the team is still winning. :)

This is the part that bothers me. It's getting to a point that when he starts backing down a defender, I almost expect him to miss a bunny hook-shot or turn the ball over if he can't find someone to kick out to.

It's clear he's saving his legs - I guess we'll see if it works. If it does I'd like to see some parallels develop to the showtime Lakers with this team. The showtime fast break was actually the first 43 minutes of the game, but when it was winning time in the final 5 minutes, more often than not they played inside out through Kareem.

When we can win games against good teams when all of our starters play less than 30 minutes a game, I'm happy. I think Coach Pop is GLAD Tim is only getting 13 and 9, while only playing 28 minutes a game this early in the season. He'll take that every game, as long as it turns into a W.
