Awesome work carina_gino20!!

One of your best yet.

Only suggestion is to add the look of a "seam" across the ball (maybe some leathery ball texture too)... otherwise it looks like Manu went bowling (and those pins don't know what's coming at 'em)... :king

I've noticed the intensity in Manu's face this year. You really got that in your drawing. He's as serious as a heart attack and I'm sure it's rubbing off on his teammates. Great work!

Not to criticize either, but...

If your going to actually do some editing, might I suggest just taking the ball out of the picture altogether? I think it takes away from the full effect of Manu's scowl not to see his chin or lower lip.

no, the ball should stay. that's the point of the pic... manu holding a basketball and glaring at someone.

great pic by the way, definitely one of your best, or maybe your best yet.

Well I'm not gonna try to pretend to know what the artist was thinking, I just made a suggestion of what I would personally prefer. If she also likes his face covered up by the ball then that's probably how the picture will stay.

Out of curiosity, how long did that sketch take in total?

Probably 3.5 hrs in total. Finished most of it for 2-3hrs the first night. Then I set it aside because I didn't like how it looked. Plus, it helps me to see the flaws better when I try to do the finishing some time later.

As Bender said, it was part of the original pic. People here know I work mostly from photos. So it's probably gonna stay that way. I just need to make it look more like a basketball and less like a bowling ball.:lol

Nice sketch, I haven't seen all the drawings that everyone is referring to, but I like how you've moved away from the simple line work in the Duncan picture posted under this discussion and let your shading create all the lines in this Manu portrait.

Have you ever considered using charcaol if you're staying in a black and white medium? It's relatively inexpensive and you can get some great contrast using it if you don't mind the mess.

Are you the one who made those cool Spurs paintings at 48 MoH?

I've considered charcoal many times, but I think the one time I started doing it, I couldn't control the mess so I gave up. But I'm open to it, the same way that I'd like to do some color again. Just that I never get around to doing it. :lol

Yes. I wish I had time to do more. I have a Blair one in the works, but I'll probably get down to a Manu one before I finish that one. Watercolors take me a bit longer, but they're cheaper than other paints.

With charcoal, stick to portraits first--just a close, tight shot of the face. The point is to have some open space to work with the medium. Also, with charcoal, you want to go with a higher contrast on the picture. The subtle shadings with the pencil are nice, but harder to work with charcoal.

I always lay the charcoal down on the darkest areas first, generally the hair of jersey framing the face. Then I grab one of those blending stubs (or roll newspaper into a point to create one) and take some charcoal from those dark areas and push it out to create the shadows on the face. I never actually use the charcoal block or pencil itself to touch any of the face. I do use a charcoal pencil for the eyes though. Also have to make sure you have fixative for after you're done. Hair spray works too.

It's been ages since I did watercolor or charcoal so my technique is pretty much nil. The main reason why I stick to pencil is because it's simple. I never had much success with shading using charcoal, so thanks for the tip.

Do you know any site that has useful tutorials on drawing with charcoal? Especially shading.

Nah, his nose naturally leans one way, and the thickening of the ridge (captured perfectly in the sketch) tells you he's broken it at least once. ;)

Hi Spurologist, I think you've already seen the TP sketches. I don't have a recent one.

Haven't drawn a Spur since these last summer:

David Robinson sketch (http://spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155357)

George Hill sketch (http://spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=154646)

The others are way back 2008.
