Best record in the West 3 of those times. Second best record in the West the other two times. Homecourt in the Finals all 5 times.

Not much difference between top 2 and top 3 in the entire league when one of those top 2 teams you don't even meet in the playoffs.

Homecourt often makes a big difference. It mattered in 2010 against Boston, 2008 against Boston, should have mattered in 2002 against the Kings, and mattered in 2000 against Portland.

If the regular season didn't matter, why are Laker fans talking shit during the regular season? When the Lakers started off well, why did those wins matter? But when they lose, all of a sudden it doesn't matter. Let the Lakers go into the playoffs a 7th or 8th seed, and we'll see how the regular season doesn't matter. If the regular season doesn't matter, Laker trolls should just leave the forum until the playoffs.

Sometimes teams drop games periodically to teams they shouldn't lose to. See the Spurs loss to the Clippers or the Mavs loss to the Bucks last night. It happens sometimes.

The Lakers this season have chronically played poorly against many sewer teams and only have one win against a team with a winning record. Big difference.

But at the end of the day the regular season doesn't matter all too much. Seeding is nice down the stretch, but leading the league isn't a huge deal as long as you do well in your conference.

It's not that the Lakers are losing games.

It's that they're losing games to sub .500 competition on consecutive nights while apparently forgetting how to play defense. There seems to be no chemistry on their squad right now. It might be pointless and forgotten come playoff time, or it might not and they could struggle throughout the season, especially if they have any more injuries.

The Spurs 20-3 mark would mean a lot less if they weren't absolutely blowing teams out like they have been. Same with the Celtics, Heat, and Mavs. They aren't scraping by the competition, they are winning night after night with some ridiculous scores.

If the Lakers think they can cruise and then just turn it on come post-season, they're not even going to make the WCF. I still look for the team to gel, but at this point, they're suspect to a lot of real problems that can hinder a team, no matter how good they are.
