Antonio McDyess Emotional as Retirement From NBA Looms (http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/12/16/antonio-mcdyess-emotional-as-retirement-from-nba-looms/)
By Chris Tomasson
...Barring an unexpected turn of events, the San Antonio Spurs forward will retire after this, his 16th season.
"No doubt,'' McDyess said in an interview with FanHouse before Thursday's game at Denver about retiring. "I've been in it for 16 years. I'm tired. My body is breaking down. I'm just tired. Enough is enough.''
..."If I'm willing to retire, definitely it's not about the money right now,'' McDyess said. "(Playing) 16 years is a long time. I had fun. I've been blessed to play that long. Just to get to this point of my career is definitely a great thing. But I know when to say, 'No (more).' I know when to stop because I can't do it no more. I'm out there and can't run around with young guys and waking up with achy bones for no reason. That's kind of telling me it's time to let it go.''
..."I hate to say never, that I won't (ever play again) because I still love the game,'' McDyess said. "But if you ask me right now, it will definitely be, 'Yes, I'm done after this year.' ... It's a strong, strong, strong yes (of retiring after this season). ... I'm pretty sure I will retire, but I still got friends that still say, 'Hey, Dice give us one more year.'''
..."It's sad,'' McDyess said of returning to Denver, where the Spurs also will play March 23 during the regular season. "When you've been doing it for so long, and then just to say, 'Goodbye to it,' ... This is my favorite by far, where I started my career, and to end. And be thinking, 'This is my last time playing in this arena ever,' is definitely sad to be. But it's still a good time.''

Classy, classy guy. If the Spurs could somehow win it all this year, I would be happiest for Dice...
This guy needs a ring before he goes out.

Win one for Dice!
It's the least we can do after stealing his championship dreams in '05.

If the Spurs can somehow manage to pull down another LOB this season, I would be happiest for Dyess. Dude is a badass.

Would be nice to move that contract to a team looking for cap relief in the offseason since it appears he is gonna retire anyway..Win one for the Dyessman

From what I understand, so long as we can absorb the salary and stay under the cap, there's no need to trade him. After he retires, we can accept a player from any team as a trade exception. We might have to give a 2nd round pick or something like that, but pretty inconsequential.

I really like that sig pic. The menacing looks especially.
damn, he talks like he is falling apart. From what Ive seen this year he still looks pretty mobile and makes an impact when he is on the floor.
Hang in there Dyess, gonna get you a ring this year!

The Spurs aren't going to win Dice a ring. If the Spurs win a title, it will be because Dice will have had a couple of amazing series going against the likes of Gasol, Bynum, Garnett, Shaq, and Perkins. If Dice gets a ring, it'll be because he worked like hell for it; there's no way he could Mitch Richmond himself into one.

I hate to see stuff like this. It's pretty clear to me that he doesn't want to retire, but his body is kind of forcing him into it. Maybe one year off and one more year back? But if he does win a championship this year, then I think that'd give him a lot more peace with retiring. Maybe this is his year to win it all, I remember Sean Connery in a movie..."Old tigers, sensing the end are at their most fierce." Maybe that quote applies to more than one guy on that team. Gives me chills just to think about. This season's going to be great and I'm glad just to be along for the ride.

Here's another reason why Spurs need to win it all this year. McDyess deserves a chamionship!
It breaks my fucking heart of hearts to know a guy played basketball for most of his life, all of his career, is a multimillionaire because of it, probably had more pussy than Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie put together, and is about to retire younger than me. Yeah, I am heartbroken forever.

Most of us have Crapy jobs and can't wait to retire. But imagine doing something you love for a living and having to stop after doing it for so long. Most ppl have a withdraw from a job they retire from ..so just imagine something you lived and breathed. Gotta feel for the big man dice. It's not like he looks bad...dude can still pump out the shots and blocks. Cmon dice one more tough run and these spurs will help you get your ring.

You sort of cheapend my Hallmark moment, but you made me laugh with that.

Dice is truly one of the nicest and most geniune guys one could ever meet. A real salt-of-the-earth, understated guy. No matter how much his mind and heart still want to play, the body looks to be betraying him. It's the natural progression of an athlete.
Hell, even a weekend athlete gets bummed when he can no longer play the sport he loves. Believe me. So, imagine when you've done it for a living, been paid handsomely and have literally built your life around the sport. It's got to be gut-wrenching.
I truly wish that he had been able to spend a larger portion of his career with the Spurs.
What a Great Player does the dirty work for the team, stuff not record on the stat sheets.

Dice needs to end his career an NBA champion. No homo, but I would probably tear up for him if he did win it all. This guy deserves it.

No. If he retires and rolls off, there is no cap exception for that.

Hell yes. I want them to win it so bad I can taste it.
I don't know if there's a classier guy in the league. He's one of the few guys out there you'd still consider a good role model for kids.
I also hope that when the playoffs get here, he lets it all go and plays as hard as his body will let him-not leaving anything out there to look back at and wonder about.

I hope he gets his ring. I know he has not been a Spur long, but it feels as if he has in some ways. Great guy. Wish he could play longer for us.
