You can track how the written frequency of specific words changes over the years, dating back to the 1700s.

Examples:

-Names:

Yeah it took me like two seconds to let my mind wonder and insert dirty words into the search. I found it interesting how a lot of the profane words we use today gained momentum in the 60s.

Anyway apparently there was a big smegma epidemic in the early 1900s. http://goo.gl/BDIo0

The word "dick" had a big rise in the mid to late 80s for some reason while still staying at peak through our current time frame. http://goo.gl/VnYVh

Apparently fuck was a pretty popular word around the turn of the 18th century. :lol

That's pretty cool, my kids and I spent an enjoyable, lazy Saturday morning playing with it. Thanks Shoog :)

Yeah, I'm not sure how accurate or complete their database is before say 1800, so there may be some bias in what they have collected.

This is a really cool website.

A lot of people made a big shit about Google digitizing books but their ability to do something like this is what makes their efforts worth it. Prahps to Google.

So what is Google basing this off of to get their results? Is this just a for-entertainment site?
