i cannot think of any other team which has been contenders for so long, yet spectacularly failed/underachieved so many times in a row.
'06: made it (illegitimately) to the Finals, where they had home court advantage and won the first 2 games decisively. plans for the parade were already being planned. the Mavs went on to lose 4 straight games and lost the title in a display of total collapse and ownage.
'07: determined to make up for their humiliation, the Mavs go 67-15 and are heavy favorites for the title. they then become the first 1 seed to lose to a 8th seed ever (in the 7-game format), losing to a golden state team that had never done a thing before or since, widely considered to biggest and most hilarious upset in league history.
'08: again have a solid season, only to get dominated by the new Orleans Hornets in the first round (another 1st round exit)
'09: again have a solid season, only to get dominated by the Denver Nuggets.
'10: have a solid season and ranked #2 in the west, strengthened by a series of big trades (we staaaacked), only to get humiliated by the 7th-seeded spurs, thus becoming the first 2nd seed to get beat by a 7th seed ever, giving them yet another shameful record to go along with them being the first 1 to lose to a 8
they are already having a 'good season' in '11. we all know whats going to happen come the playoffs.
