honestly, the image of Jackson + the greates of all time (MJ) will live forever. Everything else might not.

LOL who cares but the real answer is the Lakers ...

Come on with MJ Phil did not get hardly ANY credit ... it was mostly MJ and in some cases even Tex Winter was getting the praaise for the triangle. In fact many had the anyone should win with MJ view ...

Phil started getting praise when he led the MJless Bulls to a great record the first baseball/gambling year...

Phil cemented his status by surpassing Red ... with the Lakers. Though he ref whined in chicago, the asterisk comment, cow-town jokes, it was broke-back mountain kind of game ...his most famous quips and his tell-all book all happened during his L.A. tenure ...

Easily the Bulls but as an author I liked his time with the Lakers:

^ Great stuff in there to see whats its like coaching a HOF bandwagon but failing to win that season and dealing with Kobe's rape fiasco. Phil's not afraid to talk about players that for sure even franchise ones.

This fat bastards best coaching ability and go to trick is to not do anything. His ability to not do anything and let his multiple all stars rake in the rings... yeah GOAT for sure....

Phil's had great floor generals thats for sure. A good recent example would be against OKC where Kobe was the one that made the adjustment to guard Westbrook who was destroying Fisher in that series. Without that they would probably be taken to 7 games.

This. PJ was a great coach with the Bulls. But I think that the personality of PJ really came out since he's been coaching LA.

Phil Jackson of the Chicago Bulls - Cold, calculating, scary.

Phil Jackson of the LA Lakers - Jolly old man who sometimes gets grumpy and throws teamates/media/nba under the bus. Still smart but goofy.

I'll see him as a laker coach. To young to member bulls.

in other words.

Bulls under Jackson won and made it look good. Lakers under Jackson won but make it look goofy.

Lngrr is right. The Bulls gave him credibility took him in as a CBA success and promoted him to the big job. But his personality came out ...maybe he was always an arrogant prick did not come out until he came to the Lakers. With the Bulls I always thought he was a hippy whiner that manipulated the refs because the Pistons and Knicks beat up on his finesses guys (sound familiar?) ...but in L.A. his ego knows no bounds ...and I love it .. . but I think he has made way more admirers and pissed off more people in L.A.

The second part of the OP's question was the star part ...and of course MJ is more "iconic" than Kobe ...BUT who has he had to coach more? don't get me wrong PJ writes how hard it was to get MJ's buy-in but Just dealing with the shaq/Kobe dynamic and the circus atmosphere ...alone links him to the lakers ...IMHO

Both. After he coached the Bulls and won 6 NBA championships he became head coach of the Lakers and has now won 5 NBA championships with that franchise. It's really kind of hard to just think of him as the Bulls coach still after all that success with the Lakers. When I think of Phil and coaching I see him as both Lakers/Bulls coach with MJ and Kobe.

I identify Phil Jackson more as the Bulls coach, but it's not like we don't associate him with the Lakers obviously. And since that's where he's at and where he's had his most recent success, it's easy for some especially younger people who weren't following the NBA in the 90s to identify him more with the Lakers. But the Bulls is where he made his mark and probably the reason he's with the Lakers.

I will say this though, I think he's done a better coaching job in his tenure with the Lakers than with the Bulls. When he started winning in Chicago, Doug Collins had already laid down plenty of the groundwork and the best competition in the Lakers, Celtics, and Pistons got old at just the right time when Jackson arrived to take over. With the Lakers, I think Phil really did have to do a lot of work to get that team to win titles and then again after Shaq left. And at the very least, he had to contend with the Spurs over this past decade to help the Lakers win.

He's the Bulls coach first, but he's probably done his best work with the Lakers.

Of course his best work came with the Lakers...he turned Kobe from a guy who airballs 4 shots in the 4th quarter and overtime in the playoffs, to a top 10 guard of all time..

I'm interested in seeing Hitman's take on this topic. For me, I still remember him as a Bulls coach moreso than Lakers despite him being in LA longer. He's been to more Finals as a Lakers coach but would have won at least one more with the Bulls had MJ not quit to play baseball. I'm glad their dynasty broke up because he came to LA and taught Shaq/Kobe how to win just like he did with MJ/Pippen. Neither of these 4 hall of famers have done shit* without PJ - and that's saying something about PJ's ability to coach.

*Sans the Mavs choke job/DWhistle's perfect FTA stroke.
