View Full Version : Artest confronted and yelled at Phil Jackson during practice

At a recent practice, league sources said, Artest loudly confronted Jackson. As he tried to fit into the defending champions a season ago and earn his way, Artest grudgingly went along with Jackson’s public floggings. This season, Artest has less tolerance for it. Essentially, Artest told Jackson that if he wants to coach him, coach him. Just stop embarrassing him in public.

Haha Ron needs to get his head out of his ass if he doesnt wanna get criticized by Phil. He needs to be coming off the bench pretty soon cuz they need some more athleticism in the starting lineup. Im starting to think that he's too stupid to learn the triangle lmao.

“See, I can’t really understand the Triangle [offense],” he admits. “There’s 1,000 plays in the Triangle. It’s such a challenge. I get so frustrated about it, I have to call my psychiatrist. So I just stay in my one spot in the corner. If I leave my spot, I get yelled at. Phil’s gonna say, ‘What are you doing over there?!?’ So I just don’t move.”

Phil Jackson says confrontation with Ron Artest was direct, not a big deal (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/04/phil-jackson-says-confrontation-with-ron-artest-was-direct-not-a-big-deal/)
Kurt Helin

Yes, Phil Jackson and Ron Artest had a confrontation (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/04/report-phil-jackson-ron-artest-have-clash-of-styles/) during a recent practice, but to read much into that about the focus of the Lakers or the relationship between the two would be a mistake, Jackson said Tuesday night.

Yahoo Sports first reported (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Av47Y3ZNW2zeTJekVrGxfSI5nYcB?slug=aw-jacksonlakers010411) the conflict today, but Jackson said the report calling it a “loud” confrontation was inaccurate, saying instead it was “direct” and adding that the relationship between he and Artest is just fine.

“It was not a loud confrontation it was a man-to-man confrontation. It was obviously out of character for that to happen at practice and for Ron. And it was not about embarrassing him in public, it was about some of the issues that have been brought up that were focused about him….

“It’s nothing more than what could normally happen in a practice. And obviously there is a spy or a cam or a leak or something that went on in our practice, but those are the things that happen in practice. It was not the first time and it’s not going to be the last….

“Ron came in and apologized not only to me but in front of the team for what he said was a distraction at practice. That was his own desire to do that, I didn’t even solicit it from him.

In Ron’s defense, I’ve been trying to motivate him through a variety of activities, starting from the very beginning, just kind of talking about his activity level and his sometimes bizarre behavior. He wants it to be in private, so I said don’t act it out in public.”

Jackson added he was willing to keep things private with Artest. If Artest does something during a game Jackson said he would have to comment in a public setting, but if it is private he will honor Artest’s request.

This latest incident tied into comments where Jackson expressed concerns about distractions and “outside influences” on the Lakers this season. Jackson said those were general concerns, not specific to any one thing. Basically, he said veteran team such as his needs to keep its focus.

“The idea is that when you have a group of professionals that has played anywhere more than five years they know what it takes to play the game and they know what their job is….

“I mean I had Dennis Rodman, so what can you say? Dennis would go on a bender for two days then come back and play a great game because he knew how to get ready for a ball game. Even though he needed to blow off steam, or whatever he did. I don’t know what he was doing.”

Kobe says these Lakers better off than 2002 three-peat team (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/05/kobe-says-these-lakers-better-off-than-2002-three-peat-team/)
Kurt Helin

Doesn’t it seem like every January we need to have some discussion about how the Lakers are struggling, and this time it’s serious, that the omens are bad, that they can’t win a title playing like this, yada yada yada…

It’s true, even after last night’s Lakers thumping of the hapless Pistons, if Los Angeles does not at some point start playing better than they are now they will not make the finals, let alone get Phil Jackson ring number 12. But we had this discussion last season and the Lakers figured it out. Same with the year before that and for a long stretch back to the early 2000s.

After Tuesday’s Lakers game, Kobe compared these Lakers to the last Lakers three-peat team of the 2001-02 season.

“We were awful,” Bryant said. “People here forget about that stuff. We were awful and dysfunctional. Here, right now, we’re just awful. It’s much better now than it was. People forget that three-peat that we had to get to, we were [expletive]. We had to go on the road in San Antonio and thank God the Eastern Conference was terrible. We winded up having home court advantage in the Finals but we were awful.”

Just to be clear, the Lakers did have home court over the Spurs that season, they did not over the Kings in the Western Conference finals. And the Nets would like you to remember them as something other than terrible that year.

But the point about dysfunction is dead on.

Those Shaquille O’Neal/Kobe Lakers were a genuine soap opera. Not manufactured drama. Back then the tension in the locker room was palpable. Jackson struggled to keep his two stars on the same page long enough to win games (and he sided more with Shaq because he was the dominant locker room personality at the time).

Derek Fisher said that those teams helped today because he and Kobe learned and matured from those experiences. They now don’t get too high or too low during the season — or listen to the talk around them — something Jackson has helped teach them.

Which is why the news about a Ron Artest/Jackson tiff (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/04/phil-jackson-says-confrontation-with-ron-artest-was-direct-not-a-big-deal/) or rumors of problems between Kobe and Pau Gasol are overblown — this is a really professional locker room. A veteran team. Talk to them and it’s clear this stuff doesn’t really bother them. And it doesn’t seep on to the court like it did in 2002.

That’s not to say these Lakers are three-peat bound — the Eastern Conference is anything but terrible this year at the top, plus the Spurs are serious. But a little history helps us remember that things are just not so dire now, no matter how some try to paint them.

Spurs fans never even witnessed their team repeat, let alone win a back to back to back. Your comprehension of the situation is pedestrian.

Stick to subjects you guys know, like winning meaningless regular season basketball games.
