Robby Alomar got 90% of the votes; Blyleven got 79.7% in his 14th year on the ballot. Barry Larkin (62.1%), Jack Morris (53.5%), Lee Smith (45.3%), and Jeff Bagwell (41.7%) managed more than 40% of the votes.

Mark McGwire was on 115 of 581 ballots (19.8%)
Rafael Palmeiro was on only 64 of 581 ballots (11.0%)

41.7% for Bagwell is a crock of shit. Larkin should have been a first-balloter as well.

These voters are assholes.

I agree, by and large -- though I think the signal is strong that each will get in and relatively soon. Larkin got about the same percentage this year as Alomar did last year, which bodes well for him, I think. Bagwell's starting out in the range of a lot of guys (and better than many) who were on the ballot for a few years before ultimately gaining enshrinement.

But all in all, I agree that the system is deeply flawed.

It's apples and oranges to an extent, but Alomar got in with 90% of the vote, meaning that in his year of election, he got a higher percentage of the votes cast than did Frank Robinson, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, or Ernie Banks (among others) did in their respective years of election. Somehow, that just seems very off to me.

Actually that doesn't seem that off to me. 12 time all star, 10 time gold glove winner, 4 time silver slugger. Most gold gloves of any second baseman in history of the game. Key player on two World Series teams. Arguably one of the top 3 switch hitters in the history of the game. Roberto was the man. I think people forget how good Roberto was. Perhaps he doesn't deserve 90% of the vote first time around. But it's not as off as you might think.

Maybe "very off" was a bit of an overstatement.

I agree absolutely that Alomar is a no-brainer Hall of Famer.
