View Full Version : The difference in fanbases

After participating in the Celtcs/Spurs thread a little last night, I noticed a big difference between Laker fans and Spur fans.
Laker fans think their team could go 1-81, and still win the playoffs without a loss.
Spur fans think their team is now destined to fail, and has no defense, even though they came back last night to almost beat Boston (admittedly without two starters, but still).
And Mavfan has high hopes to win it all, with a gut feeling they won't. (Kinda like Red Sox fans pre-2004, without the extreme pathos.)
As you all know, Boston fan is highly obnoxious, and desperate to prove they can still win it all as long as their stars take their meds.

I don't think any spurs fans saw the team as contenders in any of the last 3 years. Our record gives us hope though

Looking at the Celtic defense last night was astounding. It's a true commitment there, not just lip service. Nobody else comes close to that.
Rondo coarses thru that team. His presence soddens their capabilities to a fine pitch.
There must be others, but, off the top of my head they're the only team that I can cite & respect. They're in a time warp, and they're alone.
We ring, but, we're in the current.

Spurs fans definately over-react to shit but that comeback against the celtics had nothing to do with defense...
Ray Allen missed 2 free throws.... RAY MOTHERFUCKING ALLEN missed 2 Free throws!!!! WTF!!!!
and that take away from Pierce was a shit load of luck more than anything. Pierce is one of the best ball handlers in the game.
Before those 2 flukes (3 if you count each freethrow miss from Ray Allen... 1 miss is rare, but 2 misses in a row? doesnt happen with Allen.) almost imploaded the universe, Celtics had the win locked up.

Garnett is still the key Boston player. His injury could be a deal-breaker, but let's see how long they lie about it. As for Rondo, the Christmas game saw Allen airball a 3 and KG brick a free throw in the final minute, so I think they can replace his skill set if need be.

When they tried to wiseguy 'em out of that game last evening even Ainge immediately came to the fore.

You people are so fucking rediculous, we're talking playoffs in jan? We had a rough game tues for sure but we were stuck in the lincoln tunnel. And I think it's a miracle to almost pull it off on the 2nd night of a back to back on the road, while bos shoots 61% and it still comes down the last shot. Laker fan we just whipped your ass so shut the fuck up. And mavs fan win a fucking ring during one of your 70 win season before you even show up on this board. You don't quailfy for the conversation with no rings. You the 90's braves, the colts choke, choke, choke!
In the 2004-05 season, the Phoenix Suns started the season at 31-4. What did they win that year?

Each fanbase has its share of good and bad, but if we're going to speak in general terms and just as it relates to fans on Spurstalk...
Spurs fans are generally some of the more knowledgeable basketball fans I've seen. Like I said, there are the share of idiots, but I think most have at least a good grasp of what's going on. And their championship success hasn't made them too arrogant, with two exceptions. They're obnoxious to Mavs fans, and they're pretentiously pompous towards Laker fans. But I think both are largely reactionary to how Mavs fans and Laker fans go at them.
Laker fans are funny. They talk as if they actually play on the team. They floss rings like new toys. They talk shit with often very little substance. Ring smack from some Joe construction worker who lives in Long Beach. When you look at it in the most basic terms, you simply have to be amused and entertained by it all. I take very few Laker fans on here seriously. Once again, speaking in general terms.
Mavs fans are awesome. They're the lovable losers. They're like pre-2004 Boston Red Sox fans. They're the bitter old woman scorned. They've been so close to happiness before and it's always been ripped away from them. Many of them are smart posters with good knowledge of the game, but most of them are also ticking timebombs and you never know when something might trigger them. They walk through life expecting pain and doom but still running towards the light in hopes of something better. But their crushed hopes have hardened them, made them laugh at themselves, and made them witty, clever, funny. You just never know when they'll blow up again. Tick-tick-tick.
There aren't enough Celtics fans on these boards. Celtics fans don't bother me too much but that's probably because I've never been surrounded by a hoard of them like at a Celtics home game. If I were, I'd probably think of them in similar terms as Laker fans. Celtics fans are probably as obnoxious as Laker fans but they're much less bandwagony. In general though, Celtics fans should probably tan more. GTL. Why are like 90% of them so ghostly pasty white? Just saying...
Pistons fans are irrelevant. Got a good reputation for being "friendlies." But our team's irrelevance does the same for us. Like Kings fans before us, most have just gone into hibernation.
Suns fans are a mixture of Mavs fans and Rockets fans. Sucks to be you.
Rocket fans suck.

As for the observations ...pretty accurate by Lngrr and Jam.
But I dont get why people have an issue when Laker fans (or any sports fans) referring to the team they support as "we".
It's just a term most Lakers fans know they dont play and have little influence on a win or a loss (I guess the crowd/fan base can provide energy).
Speaking for myself it is a carryover from my Bruin days talking shit to Trojan fans ...In that scenario do you say "My college football/basketbal team took a dump all over your home field?" Who talks like that?
Or "WE just beat your ass SEVEN straight years in the cross-town rivalry game!!!"
I have always used "we" since college and maybe that's the issue most Lakers fans here post the way we speak ...maybe that is poor grammar ...but it's an NBA forum not the Harvard law Review.
But I do find it hilarious when the geniuses on here ask where is your championship ring etc. ... because it's a pretty weak comeback in the realm of 4 rings fa&&ot ...

It's not merely the casual use of "we" when talking about the team you root for. I think a lot of fans use that from time to time. "Man we played great tonight." Or "I wonder if we can trade for so-and-so." Most of us have done that.
It's when it transcends into something like, "when you've threepeated like we have, then talk to me." The overuse and the actual smack talk as if you were a player on the team is what's so funny. "You don't know what it's like to win championships like we do." That's significantly different in my opinion than the casual examples I used above.

From what I seen on here jokes about handicaps, rapes, pedophilia I do know of that so when i want to piss people off I use the "we" sarcastic condescending card to remind people here of how we run this forum because of "our" back to back titles ... :king
TBH the Laker fanbase is most similar to the yankee fanbase (I know that hurts to write but is true) plenty of bandwagon and diehards that speak about other teams in a condescending manner. the huge difference is the yanks are in the driver seats with their true rivals and have owned them ...Lakers are still chasing Boston in the number of titles.

Perception goes a long way.
Smack talk is smack talk, and should be taken with a grain of salt. When someone does use it in smack talk just to get to someone, irritate them, get on their nerves, I understand. It's funny either way. But I do think there are some Laker fans that truly believe they "earned" or helped earn the championships, that because of the Lakers winning, the fans are better than fans of other teams and have the right to talk shit. I do get a true sense of that sometimes. It's then where it gets pretty comical, if they are really in fact taking themselves seriously.
But again, it's merely perception. Perception is not always reality. Maybe they really do a great job of trolling. Maybe timvp really is lakaluva. Lol. Who knows?
Most Mav Fans are pretty retarded and always begging for the media to acknowledge them as the greatest thing ever after a big regular season win in December.
Actually I take it back, there's 2 groups: The Findog's (levelheaded and reasonable) and then the all around homer dumbasses that aren't funny, witty, or clever.
Most Mavfans here, including me, are just weird exceptions.

Easily as bad as the Spurs forum can be. Really any website filled with one fanbase usually ends up with a lot of annoying retards. The worst is people who log into to say the same thing on page 5 of a thread that people have been saying for the first 4 pages. Or just regurgitate sports cliches as analysis.

Spurs Fans: Smart, classy, knowledgeable & accepting. Can at sometimes be trollable but that is only because of their kind and gentle nature. Wants to give everyone a chance to prove themselves and to become a part of the Spurs community.
Mav Fans: Somewhat comical in small doses, sorely lacking in morale and basketball takes but really proud and rowdy.
Laker Fans: Flat out stupid, both mathematically and with regards to basketball. Can't even learn while watching winning basketball. Terribly unoriginal, cocky and self conscious. Extremely annoying and people actually turn into worse human-beings just by being around them.
Piston Fans: Pretty damn impressive bunch. Get along well with others and are almost as classy as Spurs fans. They are tough though and surprisingly funny in a subtle way. Depressed at times, but usually good sports about it.
Houston Fans: They try so hard. So hard. But they just don't get it. There is not one funny Rocket fan on the board. There is like half of a poster that is knowledgeable about the game. Their most endearing trait is their optimism in the face of failure. Real life mimics online life.

Dysfunctional Fan Portrait
The individual characteristics associated with the dysfunctional fan drawn from this study illustrates a picture of a less educated, lower income, younger, single, with no children at home, male who spends an inordinate amount of his time consuming sports media and, presumably, beer. This snapshot suggests that these individuals may lack other meaningful connections or relationships that provide direction and that promote self-control. Characteristically, the response pattern of respondents (see Table 1) suggests that some individuals, more dysfunctional in nature, are even willing to seek out unsolicited opportunities to vent--via online surveys such as the one presented in this study.
This portrait also points to the possibility that other personality traits and behaviors may be related to dysfunctional fan behavior. For instance, given the relationship between fans' reported views on the necessity of alcohol consumption, related research suggests that impulsivity (Gerald & Higley, 2002), antisocial personality disorders (Thomasson & Vaglum, 1996), or other psychopathic deviance and mania (Vallian & Scanlan, 1996) may be characteristic of dysfunctional fans. Perhaps less dramatic, dysfunctional fans may represent those individuals with maladaptive perfectionism and low self-esteem (see Ashby & Rice, 2002). Such individuals may seek perfection from the players, the coaches, the referees, the stadium food service, and the local sports radio show host, but due to poor self-esteem and coping techniques tend to complain and confront others as a means to satisfy their malfunctioning perfectionist attitudes. Finally, Ruiz (2001) finds that "narcissism and hostility [traits] are both characterized by dysfunctional social interactions, including tendencies to perceive slights, experience anger, and behave aggressively." As a means of coping with inflated and fragile serf-esteems, these individuals respond aggressively to any downward revision of the self-concept (Baumeister, Smart, & Boden, 1996; Ruiz, 2001.) Taken together, we anticipate that future research may find that the anti-social behavior of dysfunctional sports fans is not confined to the stadium or arena--but that the sporting event context gives rise to circumstances where the true nature of the individual quickly rises to the surface.

Very strong rebuttal there. You certainly skewered his post with logical, well thought out counter-arguments.

So you think all fans are rational actors. Interesting.

Celtics had no fans for a long time until 2008.
