View Full Version : Kobe admits his knee is nearly bone-on-bone

Just Kobe's quotes, hit the link for the whole piece. It's based on an 'exclusive' by Peter Vecsey with more quotes, link to that at the bottom.

Kobe admits his knee is nearly bone-on-bone (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/07/kobe-admits-his-knee-is-nearly-bone-on-bone/)
Kurt Helin

...“Because I have very little cartilage under my right knee cap, it’s almost bone on bone…

“You know how competitive and combative I am on the court,” he said. “There’s nothing I like better than to practice. In fact, I like practice more than the games, because I get to go at my teammates hard. That’s when you find out what they’re made of, how much you can push some to get the most out of ’em, and how you have to back off others so you don’t lose ’em…

“So, in order to protect my knee and avoid a situation like last year (where he had to have his knee drained of fluid during the playoffs), we decided before the season to sacrifice the team’s intensity by minimizing wear and tear as much as possible.”

Reminds one a little of Jabbar passing the torch to Magic.

We as Laker's brethren are not so fortunate this time around,,,though Bryant takes great joy in the fact that he can categorically refuse to pass his torch without nary a by-your-leave. There ain't no "Magic" for him. Just a petered out Gasol.

“So, in order to protect my knee and avoid a situation like last year (where he had to have his knee drained of fluid during the playoffs), we decided before the season to sacrifice the team’s intensity by minimizing wear and tear as much as possible.”

so basically kobe is saying his knee is more important than the team?

I don't like the guy, and won't hate on him for being injured and playing through it (there's still plenty left to hate!), but that quote was just stupid. why even mention the team's intensity? the reporters would have connected the dots anyway, and it just reads as "my teammates suck unless I push them but I can't because my knee hurts. :cry"

Disagree. Not when Kobe's game is predicated on his athleticism. Kobe's still a great shooter, but once his knees are gone, theres goes his ability to finish to the rim and hes already losing his lateral quickness due to age and knee problems. you never win against father time.

The most valid critique come from Vescey's article. how can he truly lead when he does not practice ... "we talkin' about PRACTICE!"

Kobe repeatedly tried to say it (knee) was fine and he was not discussing it anymore ... in fact, he asked the local guys to stop asking him. Peter asked him directly why he doesnt practice and he answered. i dont care if yall hate him ...but come on no need to make shit up or twist the story.

Yes...but that also goes for every other veteren in the NBA.

Also, Kobe's game is NOT predicated on his athleticism. Who you think will get hurt more from losing athleticism? Lebron or Kobe? Griffin or Kobe? T-Mac or Kobe? Carter or Kobe? Richardson or Kobe?

Hyperbole. If someone is actually injured, it usually results in a reduced level of play...and when prompted I don't see a problem in stating what is wrong with them. I can't recall when Kobe has said I played bad because of my pinkie, knee, back spasms, etc.

kobe plays a SHITLOAD of minutes, not surprising. mentioning the injury now is a win/win crutch; if he loses, it's no surprise. if he wins, it's that much more adversity.

its the other way around. Reporters claim that Kobe gets pissed everytime they ask him about injuries. Phil Jackson just said that this "Bone on Bone" injury has been going on for the past two years, yet this is the first time we all heard about it.

Just cuz the media talks about all his injuries non-stop, that doesnt mean Kobe himself is going around talking about it.

ALso maybe people talk about it cuz he actually plays during his injuries instead of just sitting games like everyone else.

Evel Knievel?

Nope, not even close.

Nobody in the history of sport - including gladiators in ancient Rome - has talked about his injuries, or perceived injuries, as much as K. Bryant. And nobody has ever begged to be referred to as a warrior as much as K. Bryant.

Practice issue put to rest (http://www.ocregister.com/sports/bryant-283307-practice-team.html)
Janis Carr
The Orange County Register

LOS ANGELES – It's not unusual to see the Lakers practice without Kobe Bryant. It's been protocol for the past three seasons because of Bryant's ailing knees.

Bryant had his right knee drained during last season's playoffs, then had surgery on the knee — his third such procedure — during the summer to repair some of the wear and tear cause by 14 NBA seasons.

Not participating in scrimmages and full drills was seen by the coaching staff as a way to save Bryant's knees and energy.

"He manages it really well," Coach Phil Jackson said Friday. "He has the ability to do that. It was an issue last year and then he had the operation in the summer. Now he's come back in a way that is most appropriate. He's stronger and started to practice some, and that helps."

Bryant, 32, has been showing up at practice more often since the Lakers lost to Miami on Christmas Day. After that embarrassing loss, Bryant said he was going to get his team focused and "beat it into their heads" during practice.

Peter Vecsey of the New York Post took exception to Bryant's infrequent practicing. The writer insinuated there is a conspiracy to keep the information quiet, and he asked the five-time NBA champion why he sits while his teammates go through drills.

Bryant said it was because he has "very little cartilage under my right knee cap, it's almost bone on bone."

Jackson said limiting Bryant's practice time — as well as that of Derek Fisher, who is 36 — was a well-thought out plan.

"When I sat down with him three years ago before the season, I told him (Bryant) the issue here is about getting older, maintaining leg strength and your ability to play," Jackson said.

"(I said) you're going to have issues, so practices are going to be monitored and you and I have to reach a point of agreement on this and I'm going to give you the liberty to pick and choose how you want to practice so we can do this the right way. That's been going on for a while."

Jackson said the team also is on board.

"We talked about it as a team," he said. "I'm sure the adjustment in having Kobe out there on the floor is a major adjustment and having him out there in practice makes it better for our team.

Kobe making excuses for his poor play, except this time he tries to make it more serious. What was it last season during that poor stretch? They tried to hype the fuck out of a small little chip in one of his fingers and made it seem like he was playing with a broken finger that was dangling and broken in half.

Kobe Bryant stops practicing with the Lakers. Again. (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/10/kobe-bryant-stops-practicing-with-the-lakers-again/)
Kurt Helin

It was during the Colonel Kurtz-like decent into darkness that was the Lakers play around Christmas that Kobe Bryant decided to do something very Kobe — fight through his knee pain (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/07/kobe-admits-his-knee-is-nearly-bone-on-bone/) and swelling because he needed to practice with the team again. That knee had kept him from practicing all season but it was no longer going to be an issue, he decided. As if one can just decide that.

The Lakers were lacking energy and cohesion, and practice is where those things are earned, so Kobe returned to push his teammates in practice.

Well, that time is over.

Kobe went back to not practicing with the Lakers Monday, according to Kevin Ding of the Orange County Register (http://lakers.ocregister.com/2011/01/10/kobe-goes-back-to-not-practicing-with-team/46496/). Kobe shot and did some work on the side but was not part of the Lakers intensive practice. Phil Jackson was good with this.

…“it’s time for him to be back” to individual strength training and avoid extra “wearing, tearing on the court.”

“It’s not an issue,” Jackson said. “He has to work with what sustains the effort he can put on the court (in games).”

The Lakers have won four in a row and six out of seven. Sure, those wins primarily have not been against the most stellar competition the league has to offer, but considering the Lakers have lost at home to the Bucks and Pacers and Grizzlies, Lakers fans should just gladly accept the wins with a smile.

The energy is up, so it seems Kobe’s practice return did the job. For now. Next week and through the end of the month Los Angeles will get tested against better teams, then in February there comes the seven game Grammy road trip, which will be the midterm for the Lakers and Kobe’s knee.

This to me shows how valuable Kobe really is for the Lakers. Yes he has questionable shot election, yes he can still be too stubborn at times and yes I think he tends to make a big deal of his injury sometimes, but no one can really deny Kobe's impact on his teammates off the court. I honestly can't imagine Gasol commanding the same respect or presence from his teammates if he becomes a leader, so this where Kobe becomes a valuable commodity for the team.

I think Kobe's work ethic is what seperates him from the rest of his peers. With the amount of minutes and years he has logged in those legs, its quite remarkable to see him still play at this level. Never a huge fan of him, but I admit it will be a sad day in sports when this guy finally hangs it up.

The thing I like about Kobe's legacy is it has a lot of character, it has its ups and down, he had a legitimate swagger and like most great players he's thick skinned who never backed down from failures. This makes him a true entertainer in my eyes, which is why I will miss him when he's gone. I believe Lebron is on the same path, his new villain role and recent dumb statements has made him more human, its all working for him TBH. Only thing he needs is a chip or two, maybe three or four.

LeHeat, you're shovelin' pretty deep there.

I'll shit where I eat for moment:::Kobe takes, but, he does not give. His quitting in Phoenix sticks in my craw. He's never acknowledged, nor apologized for that act. It's unforgiveable.

And he's not thick skinned. A thick skinned person would not hold close to his heart every transgression ever done to him. Kobe holds in such a way. Witness his bushwhack of Daddy in the post game news conference last June.

He portends to be an entertainer, but, he's never acting. What you see is what is there.

Colorado fucked him up.

All of this Bryant legacy crap is hogwash.

If the Lakers get Chris Paul, and I'm sure they'll end up getting him or some other top name guard at some point, they'll win more titles than they have with Bryant's current frontline of Pau/Lamar/Bynum.

How did the Lakers threepeat back in 2000-2002? They had a beast of a big in Shaquille, who was in his prime and was completely unguardable. Well, the triumvirant of Pau/Lamar/Bynum is as strong as O'Neal, or stronger, plus they shoot free throws better then Shaquille and can spread the floor.

Bryant isn't anywhere near as valuable as people think. When he's gone, people will realize how easy it is to win in the NBA if you simply pound the post. Bryant makes things more difficult with his selfishness.

If the Lakers were smart, they'd run something like San Antonio ran during the 2005/2007 Duncan championship years, where the office was clearly inside-out. Both Pau and Lamar are excellent passers, so they could easily do that.

But then, Bryant doesn't "get his." So as long as Bryant is breathing, it won't happen.

Perhaps, but, neither Pau nor Odom could do diddly squat till Kobe showed 'em where the bear shit in the buckwheat. They'd both been sayin' it (like you typed it above), but, sayin' & actually doin':::world a difference.

Conversely, Kobe matched that one when the Magic rolled over and played dead, but, this last one against Boston was not shaved puss. It was the deal. And daddy-O, the deal was real.
