Your guess is as good as mine on that one. At the moment the earliest is next season. However, with a lockout looming he would be better off signing a one year deal in Europe. Then try and come to the Spurs in the 2013 season.

In an interview after the draft he said he doesn't have any desire to go back and play in Europe. Apparently he had a difficult time dealing with the business side of things over there. He thinks he would have a better chance to grow and make the Spurs roster by going through the D-League.

Both surgeries went just fine. Ryan was in a cast for a bit, but he was out of it last time I saw him. Richards hangs around the AT&T center and can occasionally be seen.

Normally coming out of the Ian Mahimini Rehab Wing...

A year or two of D-League seasoning would be just the thing for him. It is good to hear that he's frequenting the Spurs facility.

Well at least there is finally a precedent regarding an unsigned second round pick's entering the D-League. If Richards joined the D-League without being signed by the Spurs, any D-League team could draft him but no other NBA team could call him up. The Toros could then trade for him with what looks to be relative ease,

Curious about this kid.

I can't really say what he can do because the only video I have seen of him, he was a man amongst boys. His jumpshot looks pretty good though. I might actually have to buy some tickets and go see the kid in Austin.

I hope you and other will keep us notified when this players come in to the toros line up and plays consistently for the team, as well as progress and stats. I think this kid was maybe a jewel amongst other players in the draft, and I'm guessing that this player might be a future component of future championships down the line.

Basically, any position in where his arm is in an overhead throwing motion(swimming, volleyball or tennis serve, a pitching motion) would put his shoulder in it's weakest set. It takes 6-8 weeks for a shoulder surgery to properly heal, and then a normal person would have 3 months of rehab which would seek to both strengthen all the muscles of the surgically repaired shoulder and range of motion and flexibility. It does no one any good if a player is strong but can't use his shoulder the same way. I know someone whose shoulder took 6 weeks to heal and 4 weeks to get strength and full range back(well...95%, but that was due to the type of surgery plus, the guy wasn't a pitcher or quarterback, so he wasn't going to miss the 5%). But since Richards is a pro athlete, it wouldn't shock me for him to go 8 weeks healing and then 8 weeks minimum for rehab.

Realistically I think he could be a Channing Frye.

Well the hope is that he could be a slightly better defender and rebounder than Frye right? I mean the Spurs are known to round out their players in terms of player development pretty well....

In any event, a Channing Frye type player that could rebound a little and play some solid post defense would be a highly valuable commodity in Pop's system.

Richards showed a feathery left-handed jump shot from the right elbow and an array of post moves as he worked with Spur coaches at a basket by himself. But he is still considered a raw prospect because of his lack of extensive game action.

Richards has been seen around the team at several points this season, but is not expected to sign with the team until after the season.

I'm trying to keep my expectations low too, but it's been hard not to dream/visualize having a stronger, more physical, left-handed Dirk on our team.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Richards being signed this summer. Don't forget that Spurs have drafted him knowing that he didn't want to be stashed overseas.

Spurs have a great tool to work with him with the Toros. It could be even a better one if the new CBA improves the NBA/D-League relationship.

I wish the D League had 30 teams...1 per NBA team and it served as a farm/rehab club for the NBA teams. So all the players on the Austin roster belonged to the Spurs. They could be called up, but it had to be for at least 10 days or 5 games, whichever occurrs first. Also, any player sent down to the D League had to remain for 10 days or 5 games.

What are the chances this guy plays at an elite level in the NBA?

If he has a great work ethic, IMO he can be a good scorer. not sure about toughness, defense and rebounding!

I love his size and athletic abilities!

This guy is going to have to prove himself. Already a serious injury. He's never played against great competition. He could be good, but I imagine he's going to need time to develop. He says he doesn't want to play in Europe. I guess he can enjoy sitting at the end of the bench when Pop doesn't play him for weeks at a time.

Don't know much about the Splitter situation outside of an injury for a period of time, but Pop played Blair even with his knee situation in to last year's playoffs. I'm sure Ryan would get PT, especially if Dice is truly done.

Yeah the fact that the Spurs are still holding onto this kid means they think he definitely has some talent. It would be nice if him and Da'Sean Butler turned out to be good players.

I've seen Richards quite a bit this season. The last time was game 2 against the Grizzlies. He was in R.C. Buford's box and looked to be in shape.

By the time Summer League comes around (if there is one), I expect Richards to be on the roster. There is a pretty good chance he'll also be invited to camp, and it is at that point where I expect the Spurs to decide whether he will be on the roster or sent to the D-League.

Richards has been in SA for almost a year now, and I don't expect him to go back to Europe. He got surgery and rehab here and he's mentioned he rather be in the D-League than go back to Europe.

I don't know much about the dude's game, but based on youtube videos, you can see that he has range, is aggressive under the basket, and can hold his own. He also sounds very poised and determined in interviews. He's extremely young, so he has ton's of potential.

The future looks promising.

Dude has a lot of potential, but he will have to work really hard to get his game to NBA level. If he manages to get his game up there he could be a major piece for us.

Comments on YouTube videos seem to suggest he has an arrogance about him but that may be a good thing if he is still coachable and willing to learn. Not built in the soft Euro stereotype even if he just shoots jumpers. Curious how he does in Olympics next year at home. Deng and Gordon playing? If not could open some eyes.

There is no summer league this year.

Richards is in Europe preparing for play with the British national team. He at least had been working out with an assistant coach from the Toros, and there are YouTubes of it if you are interested.

You sure of that? Maybe he was, as you mentioned, but today Danny Green tweeted he was having lunch with Butler and Richards.

Doubt Butler and Green went to the UK just to chill.

Anyways, I know for a fact he spent most of his time here in SA. Glad he's working out with Spurs staff and he looked good in the videos.

His doesn't look awkward down low. I wonder how good his defense is though.

His free throw release is horrible (standard Spur Big)

And his defense is also lacking against local guys can't imagine how abused he would get on that end in the NBA... On a positive note he's got some nice post moves good footwork and ball handling skills for a big, nice range as well (going by the recent youtube vids)

I don't expect a guy to be very physical on the defense in a practice 2 on 2. I mean seriously. It looked to be more focused on executing quick three dribble pass or shoot plays.

His free throw mechanics are wonky, but that is something he's developed on his own. A shooting coach can spend quality time retooling something like that.

He elevates and at times kicks out his feet too much when he shot jumpers in the videos. You could usually tell a majority of the time by that, that he would miss his jumper. When he released with more set and his feet underneath him, he had a much more fluid stroke.

His inside game during the back facing the rim drills looked decent. He struggled at times releasing the righty hook, but overall all looked decent. He doesn't need to exert any effort in getting in dunking on second chance mishaps when he was inside the lane. That was nice to see.

Overall he looks to be a promising prospect. Curious to see what he does overseas in the summer and if the fucking lockout wasn't going to happen, I'd get a nicer look during summer league.

Fucking hate lockouts. NFL and NBA.
