Before resuming trade talks for Carmelo Anthony (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3706/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3706/news) on Monday, the Denver Nuggets (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/den/) delivered a stern warning to the New Jersey Nets (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/njn/): Unless the public nature of these trade discussions becomes private, be warned that we will send Anthony to the New York Knicks (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/nyk/).

Nothing else the Nuggets could’ve said would send such chills of unease through the Nets, and that’s why Denver made the threat, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Would the Nuggets do such a thing out of spite? Would they take a lesser package out of vengeance? No one could be sure, but it sure delivered one more element of drama and intrigue to these trade talks

Indeed, the tone of the discussions between the Nuggets and Nets dramatically changed on Monday. Executives went underground with talks, and several agents were frustrated they could no longer get information from the two teams about where the talks stood. Sources still believed the Nets and Nuggets had the framework of a deal, but the talks had retreated from what one source deemed “really close” on Sunday.

Denver pushed a reset button on the three-team blockbuster as it wanted more payroll relief and seemed determined to find a way to shed themselves of the four years and $28 million left on Al Harrington’s (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3268/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3268/news) contract. For a young Nuggets management team under siege, this threat was something of a show of muscle.

The Detroit Pistons (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/det/) remained a partner in the three-team talks and the general mangers – Denver’s Masai Ujiri and New Jersey’s Billy King – worked throughout Monday on solutions, sources said.

And Anthony is no lock to bring a ring anywhere he lands.

Christ, aside from the bench legions how many actual principle ring bearers are there in the NBA? Can't be more than 10 out of 500 players.

Melo is an overrated star player, who won't take a team to the next level, much less so that of Lecheat's magnitude.

It's the bitter truth.

He is a poster boy for symbolism over substance.

Cully is right even he gets paired with Amare chaces of beating Boston and miami this year are slim.

But if they can keep Felton, Amare, Fields and Add Melo even if they have to take back a shitty contract they have the foundation for a future power. That NJ team (post trade)even with Lopez and Humphries staying with Melo, al harrington rip and Billups is not as Good as BOS, CHI or MIA and even Orlando might still be better.

Of course i dont want to pass up $55 mill but in the Lebron era of the NBA you gonna need another star to compete. Knicks are still the better option.

Denver just making empty threats ... they wanna fleece the Nets take most of their young talent AND also dump all THEIR bad contracts ...

No one would guarantee you an NBA championship imho. Lakers looked stacked on Pau's arrival and later demolished the west, but still got pwned in the finals by the celtics. a potential signing like melo wouldn't lock nothing but it would be certainly a huge upgrade. he would turn Nets a playoff team if he ends up joining them, if he finally joins the mavs, the mavs would turn elites and would turn immediately a serious threat to the lakers. Spurs have been playing good in the regular season so far, but they will definitely get pwned come playoffs due to the lack of size/toughness in the paint.

melo doesn't have the required mentality to be a good leader but he would be a perfect #2. mavs should seriously look into the possibilities of signing him imho. they had a champion squad back in 06 with the prime smokey as their #2, melo is twice the player of the prime smokey tbh

Lopez is a lazy, stoner piece of shit that's allergic to physical play. You can't trust him.

If Melo ends up in New York then you're looking at the new Atlanta Hawks basically.

the knicks are already better than the hawks, with an owner ship that's not cheap. and a far better core of players

Nets have the best offer on the table, the Nets should just say "Take it or leave it". This has the potential to blow up in Denver's face, but they can't be that stupid to take a lesser offer

mavs have no shot at melo, thats just delusional tbh...similar to asking how a line-up of kidd/roddy/sjax/dirk/chandler would fare is delusional. mav fans shouldnt get their hopes up so high, that way their collapse in the playoffs wont be as painful imo.

& his f'in' brother too. Everytime you show that utube video of Lopez having to be restrained on the Phoenix bench I nearly attack Katie-girl.
